Run along a narrow path through a nondescript wasteland, use your weapons with no sights, recoil, hit feedback or ammo limits to hose down the enemies that spawn 20 meters in front of you out of thin air and fling bullets at you that have zero hit feedback either. Repeat until map 3 tanks the framerate to single digits for some reason.
I recommend this game and the price is more than reasonable. Fun game...played for 45 minutes and got to the next level. No glitches and no controller issues...ran smooth with no motion sickness. Using Vive pro wireless. Game play is smooth and flows well. Graphics are ok...slightly blurry in some areas. Game reminds me of Serious Sam or Doom. For a new release, I think the dev team of three people did a great job...over time I have no doubt that this will be fine tuned and expanded.
I had high hopes for this game based on the footage on the store page. And then I played it. Red flags are going off in my head as a badly compressed intro video begins to play in a monitor stapled to head kind of way instead of the scene playing around you, but judging by whatever engine is running this that probably was out of the question. One of the first things I notice once I'm dropped into the world is that it can't seem to know what to render at any given time, textures pop in and out as they pleased. Then I fire the laser gun. There's no animation when it fires. Just a few LED's light up on it, making it look and feel like a cheap toy. The other guns aren't much better, the wrist blade has no impact, but how could they when the enemies simply woosh into existence, and seem to only fire at my feet for some reason. One of the larger enemies had no eye's, not that they were removed in some sick ritual or sewn shut, but rather there was no model there, I can see right thru his head, and I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to do that. Shortly after a few repetitive fire fights I got to the first ammo station and the game crashed. One hard reset later I go back into the game, played for another 5 minutes, got to another ammo station, and the game crashed again. I'm disappointed, but it's fine, I'm getting this refunded. I hope that if the developer see's this that they don't assume I'm just bashing a game. Making games is hard, but a game should be fun to play, and in vr sometimes it takes a lot of little things to make an experience just good, and a lot of things going perfectly to make them feel great. This game feels like an alpha build, that with a lot of work could be good, but in it's current state I would avoid.
If you played Half-Life: Alyx and you wished for more of an original Doom like shooter experience with constant action and far more gun selection in an open-world setting; The Stranger is the game for you. Close combat with the wrist blade and the epic music is a huge plus and hey, please support your indie developers if you're thirsty for more diverse content in VR ;)
I love this kind of FPS , i really recommend if you love DOOM :) J'adore de genre de FPS , je recommande vraiment pour ceux qui adorent DOOM :)
The developers relied on action instead of interactions and for me it works. This is a completely no brainer non stop action which I really, really loved. Unlike others, this reminds me not Serious Sam but Doom with old Unreal tournaments. It is also frequently updated.
Apart from this I only played Serious Sam Last Hope and Doom VFR. I must say both as controls and graphics, this indie gem surpassed them. There are of course more weapons and content available on them but for its price the Stranger is more than recommended. And also it was great to hear Unreal composers again after so many years.
This the kind of VR game I just love. You freely walk through a lovely landscape until a horde of demons spawns in front of you. Some of them are more difficult than others, and, sometimes, you'll have to run and hide to survive, as well as fight back. After earning some dark energy from those monsters, there's selection of weapons and upgrades to choose from. The game follows a story line shown in an intro movie and leads you from waypoint to waypoint, but, when enemies show up, it's up to you to figure out how to win. All this happens in a beautiful post-apocalyptic world. The epic soundtrack perfectly fits this atmosphere. The only down side is, it's very demanding on the system. My FPS drops in fights with flying enemies, sometimes to the point it becomes difficult to react in time. Going back to the main menu and continuing usually fixed this for me. Maybe an upcoming patch will eliminate the issue.
Good Idea lackluster execution. After a relativly neatly animate intro video featuring your standard AI Apocalyse is tacked to your head. you get the option to do a standard tutorial and the doubts start to begin. Far from being "beautiful and detailed" the 1st levels environment and enimies look like something from 2003 (even on "epic" settings) and have very simple attack patterns: run towards you and crowd. the 2 standard weapons have no firing and hit feedback no recoil and very vew animations. The Controls feel sluggish and awkward, throwing grenades is perplexing because they seem to have very strange throwing arcs and the wrist blade, while cool looking, feels more like a stiff dishrag than a deadly weapon. After the intro i expected a good old scifi post apocalyptic story, but what i got was.. nothing really. Other then the someone basic goal of "looking for hope in the ruin of our civilization" there is no real story at a point where it is the most critical in a game. You just know that there a underground cities now and that you come from there and that you are one of the "Strangers", which basicaly just means a person who likes to explore the old ruins and look for "something" and then your dropped into the first level without any real reason why you're there in particular and without anything to "ease" you into the story. So you walk a few steps and BAM out of nowhere appear some savage mutant looking dudes with bone clubs and shields and attack you and youre like: who are they? why do they attack me? what did i do to them? where did they come from? and you take out your trusty guns that feel fake and cheap and hose them down because what else are you supposed to do? Then 3 steps later soldiers with guns and scifi armor materialise from the aether an you ask yourself again: who are they? why are they here? where did they come from? why are they attacking me? And despite being armed with guns they employ the same tactic as their savage friends and run towards you and crowd you which doesnt make much sense to me and after that it gets even more confusing when the two seperate groups start working together against you which also makes little sense especially given the lack of explanation and context. The last feature in the first level are ammo stations. The look good and are nicely modeled with a lot of parts that look like they can be moved but actually cant, because once you go near them you get a very simple menu pop up where you can buy ammo and weapon upgrades for a currency that also wasnt really introduced. CONCLUSION: Despite my critizism i can see great potential in "The Stranger". But RealityArts still has to do some work here. The Weapons and the combat needs some hit and firing feedback and the AI also needs some work still. There needs to be a decents segue into the game after an intro cinematic like that and the setting, environment and enimies need a better introducing/explanation to really get the most out of a promising setup like what this game has. Finally the controls need some refinement and some clear seperation between the locomotive modes and improvement on the turning controls. Some small interactions with your environment and gear would also be nice to add further immersion. I hope this game eventually fullfils its true potential soon.
