To be honest, there is nothing really wrong with this game. On all points it does fairly alright. The problem is that if it is a roguelike, the gameplay cycle needs to be fresh and rewarding each cycle. And this just isnt. It dripfeeds you rewards at a pace that should be 2-3x faster at the very least and it doesn't allow you to speed anything up. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ elevator transition has no right to not be sped up if you have to go through it after each floor. Yeah, fun mediocre until the novelty wears off.
The design is so bad it makes me lose all desire to do anything more with it. <번역> 디자인을 그지같이 해놔서 뭘 더 하고싶지 않게 만든다
This game just feels uninspired. I won my first run mainly relying on mostly starter cards, and was bored halfway through it. There was maybe 5 enemy types, and on the final floors you fight the same enemies you fought on the first floor, just with higher stats. They all have animations as uninteresting as their mechanics. I was expecting there to be a twist because the final boss just seemed like a regular enemy, but no, the run just ended. I unlocked another character and meta progression, but don't feel like doing another run at all because of the uninteresting gameplay.
A decent 8/10 turn based adventure spooky game. But you have all the usual: - RNG kindof sucks. - not that many enemy variety. - sometimes the UI gets in the way. - too grindy.. - the best characters are unlocked last. - unity engine.. - too expensive for what it offers even if the style is nice.
When I die, I hope someone immortalizes my life in a game like this The Spirit Lift is truly a hidden gem. At the time of writing there's only 111 reviews on Steam, mostly positive. More people need to know about this game. It's in my top 5 deckbuilding games of all time and personally I enjoyed it more than the likes of Slay the Spire, Balatro, etc and I'll outline why below On the surface the game appears almost like some AI jank with the way the graphics are presented, very minimal art for chaacters, no audio voicelines, opting for text instead Story wise, you are thrust into a hotel with 3 teenagers seemingly bored at a party and finding a secret elevator lift which you unsurprisingly take to the upper floors Gameplay wise a run consists of a navigating up to 13 floors culminating in a final boss fight on the 13th floor Music throughout the game is pretty fire and sets the tone and keeps you engaged in the atmosphere. It truly feels like you're in some creepy hotel trying to look for an escape route When I first played the game I didn't know why it was called that but as I went through different floors and hotel rooms, it was difficult to not see my spirit being lifted with every interesting piece of lore discovery. It was as if I was reading a really interesting novel. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn It took me 55 hours to unlock all the starting cards and starting gears for all of the 8 characters. For some, this may be a grind but it never felt like that to me. I was so wrapped up in the gameplay and thinking of which combination of characters could optimally achieve the unlockables If you are looking for a game to lift your spirits, this is it Thank you to the devs. If you're reading this, I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this game. If you are still updating the game, I'd love to see more creature types (and bosses) being added to the game. Maybe some more starting characters as well like how about a blonde hair girl character and a black hair asian guy character to round out the roster? I love all of them dearly and play them all in different teams (my favorite combo is either Happy Go Lucky or The Sixth Sense or The Study Group). They are all quite viable but I would suggest if Garnet could use a starting card (or gear) that conditionally adds trauma cards to your own deck during a battle for easier deckbuilding synergy. Also when activating tool cards, it sometimes covers up the left most monsters intention (e.g. if they are planning to attack you it may hide the attack strength). I remember the tall mushroom dude that spawns shroomcakes being such a case for example
It's okay. The influence from slay the spire is clear but it does its own thing too, mixing the haunted house style into a lightweight deckbuilder. Cards having durability is an interesting concept. Music is good. The characters add some interesting variety. My main issue is that the cards you find in your journey mostly suck. You will probably make your deck worse by taking them. I ended the run with just my starter deck plus a few upgrades and relics. The events seem to offer a lot of curses for very minor benefits, which means most of the time you just click "no", which is a shame. The enemies are quite repetitive, they mostly seem to be the same 3-4 colourswapped enemies with slightly bigger numbers. Would be great to have more variety.
Spirit Lift doesn't quite reach the Penthouse. The Good: Graphics and Sound track do a good job of relaying the atmosphere. I love the throwback and horror vibes it has going and the bit of lore to the characters is quite interesting. The Bad: Gameplay is nice, but there isn't enough variety to make justify the grind to gain all the rewards/achievements. 54 Party compositions to try out with each of the three characters having a number of options to swap between runs is nice, but there are 4 bosses and each boss has it's own group of monster with about 2 other sprite groups. There are a about 3 or so "palette swap" monster per sprite group that act functionally different, it still gets old pretty quick when the expectation is to play at least 64 runs. The grind to gain 'power' to make your runs easier is also a bit slow. Tackling harder difficulties make it easier to get more, but the options feel a bit lackluster for the effort it takes to increase them.
It's fairly decent and I thought I liked it for one run, then I went off it quite a bit on a second run, then I'm just furious with it on a third run. How can this possibly have been playtested without anyone saying "how about we let people skip the elevator animation, it takes forever and is boring". How is there a config option for speed of walking and turning animations but *not* at least an option to *accelerate* the much slower elevator animation? The *default* walk speed is already three times faster than the speed at which the characters walk the first square out of the elevator, the max speed is even higher, which makes that sluggish elevator exit all the more excruciating by comparison. The pace of unlocks is also glacial, it takes three long runs to unlock enough points to refund the points you spent on a crappy 10% increase in base health and something else irrelevant, for an extra equipment slot, which is *also* fairly paltry, and it looks like another two entire runs after that to unlock a different unlock tree. It's three runs to unlock a new character. If this was the only game available then the glacial pace would maybe be a selling point, but in a world with thousands of games at our fingertips, why would anyone want to play a game that's almost exactly the same every time, three times, to unlock making it *slightly* different for the next run. Could have been a decent game (even ignoring these flaws it's not *great*, but I would have rated it a soft recommend) but these awful arbitrary decisions to not just *reduce some delays* makes it a pretty hard unrecommend.
Solid game, very interesting concept, loving the music, still playing through it and unlocking everything. Finding some crazy cards, powerful combos, stuff you would expect from a deck builder. Noticing a lot of people giving it a negative review and have only about an hour of gameplay, which leads me to believe they just didn't read, explore, or appreciate anything. Love the references to various things, such as the jack in the box with a skateboard saying "Hello fellow teens" Love that meme. I certainly hope they keep adding to this game, more mysteries and story, more enemies, more cards, more events and environments, more music! Keep up the good work!
While playing Spirit Lift I always felt in control about every run, unlike other deck builders I know. I realy like that! You do not need to rely on luck to get you going but it can´t hurt to get some lucky draws either, especially when you start to play on higher difficulty (Lift Level). What keeps you going is the urge to fill up your library. For these you kind of need to achieve mini goals during your runs. Before each run you can select 3 out 8 starting characters. Each character has up to 6 different cards and 2 items they can choose from. And you need to pick 3 cards and 1 item for each character. So you can start with a lot of different combinations, some are more viable then others but they all can work. You have some story to discover about the Spirit Lift. Your characters have some very shallow banter during your runs but they do not contribute to the story. I found the music quite catchy and was occasionally, without giving much thought, just vibing to it. If you like to play a deck builder where luck only plays a minor role give it a go. Maybe you will like your time with it as much as I did.
