One of the worst MMORPGs I've ever played in my entire life. And I've played A LOT. Spend your money elsewhere. Play City of Heroes Homecoming instead, which is free.
£50 for this is outrageous and the subscription for this low quality MMO is just unfathomable! Been a VERY long time player of CoH, backed this at well over £100 so I am invested in this succeeding, but the coders are deluded with the quality of this release. It should be an early release, no where near ready to charge this kind of money. The dev's are super toxic against anyone annoyed at the results after a decade of coding, they are damaging the community and future players are refunding in droves. You should drop the price to £20 min, start apologising for your accusations at "Homecoming" review bombing which is disgraceful behaviour. The CoH community wants this to succeed, we need a breath of fresh air. Instead we get toxic wind from your developers!
I followed this game from the beginning. I was rooting for this game. I played the alpha and beta tests. Sadly, not much has improved from the alpha. I've seen the devs saying that this game is being review bombed from COH Homecoming fan boys gate keeping. That is so far from reality. This game is very very bad on its own merits. It's clearly not ready for release. More could be forgiven if it was an early access $10 or f2p game, but $60 +$15 a month is disrespectful to customers. I'm very sad this game is the way it is. Hoping the devs can turn it around, but if this is the result after over 10 years development, it is pretty much a write off.
Ship of Heroes? More like I need a HERO to SHIP me away from this game
Last updated: November 30th TLDR: steer VERY clear from this game, go buy & play literally anything else. Heard about this game on the grapevine, heard about how bad it is, how tone-deaf the devs are, etc. And I thought to myself "surely, these claims and accusations are exaggerations, a game can be bad, but it can't be THAT bad!" Yeah no, it's bad, like REALLY bad, to the point where I had a notepad set up with a list of flaws because there is so much wrong with this game that I couldn't even keep track of all of it.
Boring Gameplay
Now, I know you're not supposed to judge an MMO's gameplay in the first hour, what with the meat of the combat & story being locked until you get part-way through, but I can't excuse how boring this game is even with this in mind. The ability animations, atleast the ones I got a glimpse of, lack any sort of weight and “oomph.” There's barely any feedback when you hit or get hit by an enemy, and there's never any real indication that you've aggroed an enemy, but I guess that doesn't really matter since the enemies in this game don't do any damage in the first place. On-top of these issues the game also starts recycling content right off the bat, the first 3 missions is just you going floor-by-floor killing the same aliens over and over again. Also where's the loot? An hour and a half and I didn't see a single drop, ANYWHERE!
Ugly UI
The UI in this game looks very WIP, as in placeholder-WIP, like they were gonna change it to something better looking closer to release but then forgot. There's also the issue of this game's implementation of colour picking, which might be a bit of a nitpick but I'm still gotta bring it up: You know how in other games you usually pick colours from that wheel-shaped palette with the 3 bars beneath it? Well this game doesn't have that, you pick colours and shades from a SLIDER for character skin colour, and a big ugly colour selector on the right side of the screen for their clothing.
Unappealing Art-Style
This game's art-style (calling it an art-style might be being generous) is AWFUL, all the characters have this weird gloss to them, making it look like they aren't fully rendered, and every character in general looks like they jumped out of an AI-generated Reboot remake. Speaking of rendering, this game doesn't have any SHADOWS! Just look at the screenshots on the store page, everything looks like there's some degree of full bright on.
Low-Quality in General
Did you know this game took 12 years to make? I didn't, in fact, I thought it was a joke when I found out, because this game looks like it took 6 MONTHS max to make. - AI voice acting (which isn't disclosed btw, pretty sure that's a violation of Steam's policies.) - No jump animation, as in your character goes up on the Y axis and then switches to a falling animation, - Icons for stuff in your inventory look like they're ripped from various other games, because nothing has a consistent design, - The previously mentioned AI dialogue doesn't even match up with the written dialogue on-screen, - Most of the halloween decorations strewn about are just the same spooky tree copy-pasted everywhere - Upon closer inspection, the orange crates you can interact with throughout the game are all backwards, as in they reversed the model in blender or whatever so the text is mirrored. - Music is all over the place (and probably AI generated too), none of the tracks feel super-hero-ish - Pre-made assets everywhere, some not even fitting the game's aesthetic, which leads me to my next point:
Immersion-Breaking Anachronisms
For a game set on a futuristic city flying in space, there sure are alot of contemporary objects lying around, fire extinguishers, modern wooden desks and bookshelves. My character started off with a hyper-futuristic laser shield, and a generic katana, you know the one, with the red hilt? I understand there's like, mages and stuff, but even that's out-of-place, isn't this a SUPERHERO MMO?
Insane Price-Tag (Still)
This game is over 80 bucks CAD after taxes at standard price, as of the time I'm writing this it is half-off, but even 40 bucks is way too much. Did I mention this game also has a monthly subscription? For the same price as other, much more polished MMOs? What were they thinking? UPDATE: The devs dropped the price down from 80 CAD to 38.99 and removed the subscription. You're probably wondering, "is this an appropriate price for the game?" the answer is still no. I'd go so far as to say that the game isn't worth more than 12 bucks with its lack of quality and polish.
Embarrassing Dev Response to Criticism
On top of these other issues the devs seem to be digging their own grave with these god-awful responses to criticism. When confronted by users about the price tag one dev said “we understand your financial constraints and respect them.” The same dev would then go on to claim the game is being review-bombed, when in reality most if not all the negative reviews pointed out legitimate issues regarding the game's quality. Then there's the matter of the devs segregating owners & non-owners of the game into two sub-forums on the community hub, and silencing any sort of criticism displayed on the sub-forum for owners.
Addendum: Horrible Community
My decision to refund this mess was further cemented by the hostile community response (1 player, but that may as well be the entire playerbase at this point) to a question I asked. The question? "Where are the other players in this alleged MMO?" The only person who responded to my query left a passive-aggressive reply, telling me that "there are usually 2-5 players online" and that "you'd know if you played the game for more than an hour." Before I could respond to this person, they blocked me. Curious about this individual's mannerisms, I went into their post history and saw that they have a history of leaving these sorts of messages, mainly on the game-owner's sub-forum. Despite this constant toxicity, this individual seems to be championed by the developers, even pointing them towards dissidents (people offering feedback about the game) and warning them they'll be banned if they don't stop "spreading lies and misinformation" (criticism and feedback) about the game. Of course I won't name this individual as that would fall under witch-hunting. UPDATE: this certain member of the community has now taken to spreading lies in the non-owners section of the forum, preaching about how Valve manipulated the SoH devs into delaying the game and selling it for its initial price. Of course, when confronted with proof that this was not the case, they proceeded to double down & then ignore any further counter-arguments before going back to their usual behavior. In conclusion, this ship should be considered sank, sank by the immeasurable weight of boring gameplay, a bland art-style, poor developer attitude, and toxic playerbase.
Throwing higher resolution textures at things doesn't make a good artstyle. As a result, SoH feels like it just doesn't have one. It's a hodgepodge of conflicting levels of detail that makes a lot of people ask if it's an asset flip. Plenty of icons in game look like placeholders someone made in photoshop in a single sitting. Animations aren't the best, either. Shadows on ultra setting? Characters don't even get so much as a shadow blob under them. Might as well all be floating. Combine it all with out of this world PC spec requirements, and it's easy to see why SoH is a laughingstock when it comes to graphics. Combat in the game looks and feels almost exactly like Star Wars Galaxies, for better or worse. Watch their own release trailer. A bunch of heroes standing around completely stationary from the waist down waving their arms around is peak excitement. Nothing about it would have been innovative 20 years ago. Personally that doesn't bother me (and might even be a positive), but again it's another reason people are confused about this $60 game with a subscription coming out of nowhere. Player characters are on the edge of looking great, but held back by a very basic costume design wardrobe. There are only a handful of superhero outfits, and they don't seem to have been made with compatibility in mind. The result is that on paper there are tons of options to mix and match with, but in reality you'll just be making small tweaks to a single digit number of outfits. Oh, and there is no customizing textures, no tights with different patterns. Just those base outfits and some regular clothes. And I almost forgot...the unforgettable terrible AI voiceovers. It's bad. So bad. It would have been better to have no voiceovers at all. Everything about the game is mediocre at best, and the devs take criticism as a personal attack, publicly stating that anyone without anything nice to say is just a troll. Here's a quote from their actual account here on Steam. "We all know what fans are. Fans love a person or group (think of a popular rock star) and are willing to explain away anything as a positive, even drug use, or crime. True fans just don't see the balance. Anti-fans are people who hate a person or group. No matter what this rock star does, they hate it, they hate him, and everything he does must be sinister and potentially illegal. They just can't stop talking about how bad he is, and how he must be stopped, or will be stopped. We're not asking or expecting that kind of fan, and you do not need to be a fan to post. But we don't need any anti-fans on our forums. They add nothing except toxicity." They've released a very mediocre game that doesn't excel at any single area. Not graphics, not gameplay, and from what I've seen so far, not story either. There is nothing to praise here, other than the sheer persistence of seeing this project through to a release. But, that doesn't mean this game deserves your money. Unless you just have to try the only new game in the superhero MMO sphere, just find something better. It shouldn't be hard. Edit: The devs are now deleting discussion threads that mention this glowing article about the game! https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mmo/would-be-city-of-heroes-successor-ship-of-heroes-decides-to-launch-the-mmo-with-a-usd45-price-tag-and-a-usd15-monthly-subscription-and-its-er-going-about-as-well-as-youd-expect/ Edit edit: Gave it a week, came back, immediately soft locked and had to abandon and retry a mission 3 times in a row because...if an NPC lands a killing blow on a single mob in the mission, you can no longer advance said mission. It's just so incredibly bad. Every single aspect of this game is bad.
I don't know how they did it, but they said I played 11 hours, when I actually only played about an hour fifteen including character creation. Certainly not 11 hours. I've been out of town working in camp. Not liking this game at all and now I can't return it.
Too expensive for what it is. Feels like early alpha. Buggy. Repetitive missions. Not a whole lot to do. No gear progression. No visual progression. Dull skill visuals. Unoptimized. Not fun. In the end it seems just a quest grind sim, you have several storylines and some group missions, along with being able to deck out an apartment. Just play coh Homecoming instead, the game controls is very clunky and has a good deal of stuttering flying around starting area. The game does look a lot better in game than their steam store page makes it seem though which is good. I don't know why the steam store pages screenshots and stuff make the game look far worse graphically than it is. fps was stable. I would like to give the game more of a chance to see if I can look past how clunky the combat controlling is but sadly only 2 hours before you can't refund and I can't risk it due to just how low the games population is I don't think it will make it money wise. Game def needs a demo.
This game is a buggy mess and virtually unplayable. I have not been able to play without randomly disconnecting from the world. Quests are often broken and despite any patches they are broken again. The movement is choppy and doesn't feel smooth at all. The combat is wonky and tab targeting is practically useless at times. It often glitches and continues casting spells even after combat is over. The agro range on mobs is ridiculous. I've had mobs on the second floor come raining down to fight me soon as I entered a room. The quest locations are super repetitive and it feels like you're fighting in the same 3 places over and over again. The character creator is excellent and detailed, Although I wish they had more drip for our heroes. The power sets are fun so far but there could be more powers to choose from. None of these issues are exactly game breaking except the constant crashing and quests breaking, but they can fix these issues. I just wish they would fix them sooner rather than later. I look forward to the day I can revisit this post and change it to a much more positive one.
I hoped for the best with this game, but it's become clear that it is not a fully developed product. It plays more like an early beta — frequent disconnects, mission resets, and random client crashes without any error messages are common. Even when it doesn't crash, core gameplay systems are broken. For example, if you're in combat and there’s a staircase between you and an enemy, you cannot deal damage unless you’re standing on the exact same level (step) as the target. That’s just one of many bugs — I’ve encountered new ones nearly every time I’ve played. I wanted to support this project, but in its current state, it simply isn’t ready for release.
