About
A brutal side-scrolling action RPG rooted in retro arcade challenge.
Three years ago, Mirenia unleashed an ancient evil that plunged the land into chaos. Now 18, she journeys to Tirkin Fortress, determined to seal the dark power she set free and redeem herself for the destruction left in her wake. Villages lie in ruin. The dead walk. Monsters ravage the land. Only by surviving the horrors ahead can Mirenia hope to right her past mistakes. Armed with her trusted Shield Blade, Mirenia is close of undoing the mistakes of her past. Will she succeed or ultimately only make matters worse?

The Skylia Prophecy is a linear, story-driven 2D action RPG inspired by classic side-scrollers of the 8- and 16-bit eras. Exploration exists, but progression is mostly forward, without much backtracking. You’ll fight your way through hand-crafted areas, conquer punishing bosses, and uncover secrets that reward careful players.
Old-school difficulty: Inspired by the ‘tough but fair’ design philosophy of Souls-like games. Mistakes are punished, but perseverance is rewarded.
No grinding required: Smart play and talking to NPCs will earn you upgrades that make the final stretch easier; if you put in the effort.
Combat requires patience: You have the Shield Blade, magic, and reflexes. Thinking matters more than button-mashing.
Retro presentation: Gorgeous pixel art, atmospheric music, and a tone that evokes classic dark fantasy RPGs.
-------------------------------
This is not a Metroidvania. While you’ll revisit towns and find hidden areas, progression is mostly linear. This is a focused, retro-style RPG experience with modern influences; built to challenge and reward the old-school gamer.
Please read the instruction manual if you require assistance.
If you buy this game, you get the game "The Masked Mage" for a very reduced price.

Due to limitations with the engine, some controllers may not work properly. There is, unfortunately, nothing I can do about that. Should you have any trouble with your gamepad, maybe try another gamepad or use the keyboard. I apologize for the inconvenience.

A game that's difficult for all the wrong reasons. Death brings you back to the start menu, and with infrequent check points at baffling locations, this becomes one of the biggest issues I had with The Skylia Prophecy. Even when you take that away, there is zero explanation to controls, graphical errors that will hide doors, irritating enemy projectile behavior, and the aforementioned issue with the outdated save system, this is one that needs more time in the oven. There are far, FAR better action RPG options out there for much less than the asking $20 here.
A really rough game. No control scheme listed. No tutorial. Says it works with gamepads, but doesn't. Weird hit boxes. No direction at the start of the game. Poor resolution. MUCH better Metroidvania games out there to try out. I'd skip this one.
This game is competent for a first outing, and I would be delighted to see it on itch.io. I got it for free with a bundle of metroidvania games. However, for *fifteen US dollars*, it's asking a lot. Pros: + Good atmosphere and aesthetics, I like what they're going for. Decent silhouetting and readable in motion. + There are multiple tools in your kit, like attack, offensive shielding, spells, and consumables. Cons: - Lacking modern level design, like maps, fast travel, or even just good shortcuts and routes between rooms. - Lacking modern QoL features, like remappable controls. You can work around some things with the right Steam settings, but the game isn't going out of its way to accommodate you. - Pacing is very rough, for more QoL reasons. There's no quick retry, with a lot of wasted time every time you lose. - Animation is just okay. It's not *ugly*, but there are very few frames, and it needs a little more art direction or stylization at the low resolution. - Interactable elements indicated solely by background elements and hard to see. Even something as simple as a door is easy to miss. - The combat is a bit thin, and there are few mobility techniques. It got pretty repetitive. Overall: If you get this for free, it's not the worst game you could play, but I would absolutely *not* pay for it.
I can't recommend this game for 20$ and i will explain why. First of all, let's talk about the...
PROS:

Beautiful pixel art and environments.
Really, REALLY good music.
Xbox controller compatible.

CONS:

Controls are "not so good".
There are some "infuriating" bugs.
Difficult, but for bad reasons.
No sense of progression.
Story is almost non-existant.
There are almost no checkpoints (permadeath but with some scarce save points).
Ok... Let's go. First of all, you will find yourself in the game with no explanation of controls. This isn't so bad because was like those old games that throw you into play with no explanation, but in this game is... Not good. Controls are quite simple actually. Jump, shield and attack. You have a button for using items and another for skills, and you have some too to select the item or skill you want to use. That's all. Problems starts when the game is like asking for a "dash with iframes" mechanic or something like that because... OMG... Shield is pretty useless and is mainly used to kill enemies that you can't reach with your sword... And this is another problem. You can't crouch and attack to kill small enemies. You have to kill it with your "barrier shield" that has... i this is like 3 or 4 pixels wide in front of you. Damage done with the shield tho, is so low you cant kill enemies that resist more than 1 or 2 hits and you can't block melee attacks, so you have to move away (remember, no dash mechanic). In addition, you can't use your barrier while jumping, and there are LOTS of ledges that you must reach that are protected by "look how i spam projectiles that rebound on walls" enemies. Sometimes, taking damage is a must to reach them. And let's talk about damage... There is no consistent healing in the game. Not even the save points heal you. You either heal by lvling up (it has an "strange" progression system where you level up wathever the game feels like), or you get an item that increases your hp (healing you to full in the process) or by buying a potion and using it (you can only carry one at a time)... And either way, this is almost useless because i found some enemies that kills you instantly (like the spider lady... OMG i hate her). Now, bug time. In the first hour of the game i found that the first "dungeon" is bloated with invisible doors. I had to even watch some kind of video on Youtube to notice that. This is an easy fix do... I know some programing and noticed that one of the layers of the background (is a wall-textured layer) has priority over the layer of the doors. So this could be an easy fix. The shield doesn't block sometimes (there are some projectiles that need mana to be blocked, but i'm not talking about those) The game, sometimes, has "heavy RNG" involved so you can either kill a boss flawlessly or you can die in the first 5 seconds. You could avoid some of this rng is the controls were actually good but is not the case. And what made me ragequit the game... Those annoying spider woman. You will eventually find giant spiders with a woman's torso. They will follow you until you are dead. And the position of this enemy is "permanent", so you can't get out of the room and come in again to restart the position. You will simply find her waiting ON TOP OF YOU. They are not fast but can take A TON of damage and... If they touch you, you are dead. Instakill. I was able to skip the first one with another "bug"... It seems that you have some iframes when you enter a door. So i lured her to the door, got out of the room, and entered again, and ran away from her to my destination as fast i could, ignoring collisions... It works, but i hope this is not the intended way to do it. Main problem... Later in the game i found another of those... "spider god instakill" things in my way and couldn't skip her. So i gave up. Magic was not an option. I had 3 points in that moment and was not enough. You can buy mana potions too (can carry only 1) but i think 6 magic hits are not enough... You have an "invulnerable item" too but you can't farm money in this game. Monsters doesn't drop anything and they don't respawn anyway. This looks more than a beta than a full game so... I'm so sorry to say this but is not recommended. Pixel art is pretty good and music is great tho !!!
The game is not so bad, but it lacks some features in game design, and some aspects need fixing. I've also found minor bugs during a short gameplay. So let's start from the basic staf: movement is ok, very responsive, hitting enemy has clear feedback, but - atacking smaller enemies with shiled instead of crouching slash is not very intuitive, and can be iritating at times. Graphics is really nice, I love the style, levels are nicely drown, full of details, but not overdone. Terrain destruction has oldschool arcade vibe in it, and I love it too. But - there are no "volume settings" in options, permanent death - so becouse I've died twice before first checkpoint, I have to made tutorial twice. Some puzzles are a little overcomplicated - I mean, ok - I had to discover that I shoot through the wall, and that behind the wall above is explosive barrel. But I needed two shots to do it, and I've got mana only for One shot. So I had to go back to save point, and in my opinion it's a little pointless - better game design would be, if the barrel would be at the same level as player after quiting the dungeon. Another pointless mechanic is restoring only a part of health at save point. I mean - a can go to next scene and back a few times to get full health back - so why can't I just get full health with first interaction? I believe that this game could be a great retro style platformer, becouse the programming is done really well, and the art style is pure perfection, but for now, it lacks some better game design decision and some player oriented gameplay tests. P.S. Dear dev team - let me know if you are still working on the game, and plan to fix the isseus - I hope, that I could change my review to positive some day :)
I am in the process of reviewing this game now and I have just 1 question. Why is it SO intent on giving you a terrible first impression when it is SO critical to get people in the door playing your game before you hit them over the head with annoying mechanics, a controller layout that is impossible to figure out (with no manual) and an erratic presentation style? I will be producing a full review of this game, and I sincerely hope it gets MUCH better from here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://youtu.be/EVhcQn8wfM0 No matter what anyone says, first impressions have, do, and will always leave, a LASTING impression. Especially the bad ones. Sure you can always change them with enough effort and time, but its hard to get players to like your game when the first few minutes feel so numb, distorted and difficult to get to grips with. Presented for your approval, The Skylia Prophecy from developer ERMedia available on steam now for £11.39. A game that on the face of it is a tempting proposition. Cool pixel graphics. A decent soundtrack. Multiple enemy types and powers to use. Boss battles. A dozen levels of a multi layered world to traverse and a story that sound epic and Gothic. But when a game's own press release claims "the game is not unfair, but you have to pay attention" I am immediately concerned. Because a game's difficulty isn't just set by the enemies you face or the puzzles you have to solve, apparently the developer wanted to test the upper boundaries of your patience as well. Deep breathes, I'm a big boy, and I shan't lose my temper at this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing. Welcome to my review of 2020's The Skylia Prophecy. . #TheSkyliaProphecy #Steam #GameReview
CAVEAT EMPTOR: This game is effectively incomplete. The quests in the last Swamp area do not work and last boss often falls through the floor and dies in the wrong way, soft-locking the game. It seems that the last boss was supposed be plausible with the aid of the third, restorative magic spell, though because that one was left unfinished and inaccessible, the last boss is practically impossible. I try to be favorable to this game, though it is Mission: Impossible due to INTENTIONAL DESIGN CHOICES TO F WITH THE PLAYER EXPERIENCE. Though I fully recommend it on the grounds of being a tool of controlled, humane suffering. :) I lost so much progress due to not doing one thing right and now I am deprived of certain things. Specifically, first time around I did not buy a Basic Key because the game just gave me a "Skull Key" (read: a skeleton key is defined as something that opens every lock). Later even further down into the game I foolishly went to the Illusion place thinking it is a side attraction for the boots though actually it was the main place and I lost the "side town" full of stuff to get. Keep in mind you NEED that extra stuff. This game is Souls-like brutal except the controls are extremely stiff and about 10 % as useful. Calling it "fun" is misleading - people do not play Souls-like games for fun. It is very obvious that the game is messing with the player hardcore by denying basic platforming abilities - such as jumping back down to a lower platform - in order to gate you in and effectively punishing you for trying to play the game without a walkthrough. Content-wise, it likes to be a cross of CV 2 Simon's Quest and those anime-inspired GBA games such as Aria of Sorrow... with insane amounts of projectiles. You do not play this game for fun. If fun is your goal, PICK ANOTHER GAME. A dude told me people that people play Souls-like games to 'beat the commie out of them.' Your mileage may vary. A lot of stuff mentioned in the description is not true or at least it does not work that way. Let's go through a few points: 1. "Not a Metroidvania" That means there is no going back to previous places even if you have a quest there. 2. "No grinding required." Complete BS. Your basic attack (with a horrendously small hitbox, BTW) gets more powerful explicitly by defeating enemies that release green substance when they die. There are similar death substances for the health and mana. In fact if you fail to level up your mana, you might not be able to pass a segment after acquiring the Double Jump boots that require at least 3 mana to get to the next place. Considering how you have to kill hundreds of enemies to level these attributes (health, mana, strength), saying that you do not have to grind is misleading to say the least. The caveat is that even though you can level up your basic damage with strength, that DOES NOT AFFECT THE HITS NEEDED TO KILL BOSSES OR SPECIAL ENEMIES. That means you can have a fully leveled-up Strength and still need to hit the Axe boss 30 times to defeat it. Most of your attacks will whiff it because "fair" while the boss has insanely large hitboxes for its own attacks AND you die in 2 hits even if you ground to the max by beating every single enemy on your way there. The enemies do not respawn, limiting your ability to gain any kind of a sizable benefit out of slaughtering them en masse. The "no grinding required" means 'it will not help you - perfection required no matter what.' Grinding is so heavily baked into the game it is not funny. Technically making the players die to the same bosses repeatedly counts as a grindy gameplay design. 3. "Old school - tough and fair" Nonsense - this game makes a lot of Nintendo Hard games seem fair in comparison, mostly because the controls and the attack hitboxes blow chunks here. It is beyond tough and not fair in the slightest as it punishes players harshly from experimenting and making choices without consulting a walkthrough. 4. "Combat requires patience" Nope. If you wait, the enemies will fill the room with unavoidable projectiles, meaning you need to be aggressive and have no patience to take them out early so that they do not get to damage you so much. The ghosts will fire at you whenever they are damaged even when dying, so you are not defeating them without taking damage 90 % of the time (the 10 % is when you have terrain to block their shots - a rare occurrence). 5. "punishing bosses" Oh boy. 95 % of the difficulty in this game is because of the bosses. The difficulty curve is EXPONENTIAL even among the bosses. Boss I: Just a mage that goes down in few hits. Boss II: A wall skull with at least 20 hits and a lot of invulnerability frames. Boss III: A spear-axe-armor that will kill you in 2 hits while it takes 30 - tons of invulnerability on it. Boss IV: A bleeding broad on a cross that takes forever to kill due to slowly spawning minions you have to kill. Spawns a lot of ghosts that you cannot kill without taking damage. The blood maidens have so much health you are not going to kill them without taking a lot of touch damage unless you use a mini-jump blade spam glitch. BTW, I do not know what the "softlocked from not getting the double jump upgrade" people are talking about. You do not need the double jump before you beat the bloody Mary boss and that one gives it to you. What I think happened is that they failed to find the room with the green wraith that gives the Cross Key that opens the cavern path to the aforementioned boss. You get there by taking the doors 3-3-3-1 and then pick door 1 or 2 - both of them lead to different progression locations. To be fair, there is no logical way getting a key should open up a cavern (read: usually that is what pressure plate does elsewhere in the game), though I confirmed that you need to key to unlock it in that specific part of the game. About the controls - NO KEY REBINDING IN-GAME - lots of different keys (4 directional and 4 fire buttons MINIMUM - magic, jump, attack and shield). They are extremely stiff, for example, you cannot turn around while you have a shield up and you cannot use shield airborne. If this game was to be fun, it would need a lot of adjusting... or save states or at least allowing saving anywhere. I mean that is easier than adjusting most of the hitboxes and the insane touch damage of enemies with erratic patterns and invulnerability frames. Allowing jumping down from platforms would be nice, though you could use the multiple-saves system to work around that much easier. P.S. The part about getting a free Masked Mage is probably outdated and no longer true. Granted, I did get this one from Fanatical instead of Steam. Considering that there is a separate bundle item (Magical Double Pack Bundle) for the two games on the store page, that is probably what that offer it turned into. So if you want Masked Mage, get the bundle instead of this one.
