The Rig: A Starmap to Murder ist ein storybasierendes „space-noir“-Abenteuer von Sunset Divison. Playing the role of Willard Pike, a failed traveling salesman on Mars, we must find our feckless brother Dixon, who seems to be intimately involved in a mysterious murder surrounding a broken romance. To do so, our desperate sister-in-law sends us to the farthest reaches of space in her space freighter.... The Rig: A Starmap to Murder is inspired by the point-and-click adventure games from the 1990s and also by movies like Blade Runner and of course the entire film noir scene. Therefore the lowpolygraphic style, which I don't like so much otherwise, fits well to the 90s. The puzzles, however, are not on the level of the 90s. On the contrary, they are not particularly difficult and on the level of escaperoom games for beginners. The ship's A.I., in the form of a cube-like camera in the middle of the freighter, also gives us tips and explains all relevant procedures in a humorous way. So it should be easy to live through the story in just under 2 hours. Because this game is more about the experience of a "space-noir" story. This is exactly what The Rig: A Starmap to Murder does very well. Despite the simple graphic style, it is very atmospheric, almost cinematic. This is certainly not only due to the particularly good and talented English dubbing actors and the genre-typical yet surprising story they tell. But also because of the great music and the wonderful sounds in the game. The optional but unfortunately only English subtitles should, however, remain switched on for better understanding. The immersion in the game, which is well conveyed by the dramatic atmosphere, is unfortunately somewhat dampened by the fact that Will can only move around by teleportation. I found the noise that the teleport indicator makes particularly annoying. Free locomotion, at least optional would have been a nice option. Exactly that, incl. smooth turning is now possible after an update. You can control the game without finger tracking with the index controllers and there is a lot to touch and discover. More precise graphics options are unfortunately also missing in the menu and so I set the supersampling to about 175%, so that the initially somewhat smudgy graphics clears up. The Rig: A Starmap to Murder is a dramatic "space-noir" adventure game with an emphasis on experience. Worth experiencing despite the low poly graphics. Knowledge of English is a prerequisite!
Definitely! Look, not gonna lie. It's not a long game - but that's what I like about it! It's really well crafted, immersive story-driven experience that I can play in one sitting. I love games like Gone Home and The Invisible Hours where I can choose to engage and read as much as I want, and that's what this provides. I spent a little over 2 hours playing, reading all the notes and journals to get a sense of the characters, back story and world. That's the length of a movie for less money - totally worth it for me. I will admit the puzzles were too easy / overly hinted. It's definitely not like the brutal 80's adventure games. But once I realized this is really more a story experience, I shifted to that mindset and loved it. Its atmospheric, cinematic, and (rare in indie games) well voice acted. Go into this looking for an atmospheric noir experience and it will not disappoint.
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2. Spoiler-Free Review.
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/W1PLGLsrm64 The Rig VR is described by the developer as a space noire, classic point & click adventure translated to VR. I would simply call it a walking simulator with a space mystery theme. Unfortunately, the puzzles are more on the casual side versus being like puzzles from traditional adventure games. The whole thing is over in about an hour. It's not what I would call a great game, but it's definitely better than most walking simulators in VR. There are high production values here, even if the price is a bit on the high side given the limited content. I would still say it is worth it, but especially if you see it on a Steam sale (I bought it for $9 USD and that seems like a better overall value proposition). The story actually gets very good towards the end with some intrigue. Unfortunately, since the runtime is only one hour, the story doesn't get fully fleshed out. We don't really know much about the secondary characters. However, the production values are pretty high throughout. The game has nice, not great, visuals and the Voice Overs are very well done. The music soundtrack is also good. You do get to make some choices in the story, however, they seem to be mostly for flavor until you get to the very end with a critical choice. Luckily, after the credit rolls you can continue from this point and make a different choice for an alternate ending. The game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting either 90 or 45 frames per second, depending on the scene. That really shouldn't happen and changing the graphics quality from fantastic to good, didn't do anything. You do have full locomotion, teleportation, snap, and smooth turning options. You can play comfortably seated. I did enjoy the game although it could have been done better all the way around. The story could have been more fleshed out. The puzzles could have been more challenging or interesting. The game could have been 5 times as long. I would say this is a wait for sale recommendation unless you don't mind paying a premium price for VR content. Rate 6/10.
Please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. It's a nice adventure albeit too short. I liked the realization, the story and the puzzles. I just wish it would have spanned on more hours and more environments.
I picked this game up on a youtuber recommendation. it was a good buy. though i bought it in a sale. Its way shorter then i expected but still worth the money. I would only suggest purchasing this in a sale as its not worth full price strictly because of length. I'm only keeping it because i think it was good and i want to see more from this developer, hopefully something with a similar atmosphere and a little longer.
I was really annoyed by this game. You can see I didnt play it very long. The teleporting movement feature was really annoying. Every teleport had a star trek teleportation graphic and a sound effect. Immersion is important to me in VR. This mechanic tells you every 5 seconds. Hey, you are in a video game and breaks from the immersion of an VR environment. Then i encountered the first puzzle. I didnt have the key for my apartment. It is in a box right behind you in a building hallway with a brick on it. Just seemed really silly. Who would keep a spare key in a box with a brick on it in an empty hallway?
VR escape room gameplay wrapped in an immersive story. Really nice voice acting and world building. The logic of the puzzles is really fun.
Wow! This game is stunning. Gameplay is fun and visually it's really pretty. I got so caught up in the story I forgot we were in the middle of a pandemic for a minute there. This is exactly what a VR game should be, completely immersive and engaging. Loved it!!
If you're into escape the room games you'll like this. a little short for me and the game would be greatly improved with free locomotion, in fact I'm deathly allergic to teleportation and nearly died playing it which is why I can't keep this game. Pros+ Very Blade Runner in places =) Low poly Art style (good for performance) easy (big brain feeling) voice acting not atrocious Cons- Too short nearly died. no physics and janky interaction Conclusion Definitely worth a try.
