i fell in love with tangle tower earlier this year and was SOOO excited to see that mermaid mask was coming out!! i LOVED the setting and the characters were delightful as always. soundtrack was incredible (tangle tower is still my favorite but that's mainly js personal preference for the more classical aesthetic), and the mystery i think was an improvment upon tangle tower! i will say it is relatively easy to figure out certain plot points, but the backstory and twist are stronger than tt in my opinion. and the animation is stunning!!
THAT ENDING SEQUENCE...
the couple of complaints i have is that there are times when the "open world" method of exploring and talking to the witnesses really confuses the story progression. i think this was an issue in tangle tower too but i noticed it more here. like i would find one piece of evidence and suddenly 3 peoples suspicions would unlock all at once, even if they had already seemed suspicious to me. specifically
finding the pipe with the recordings doesn't label dirk as suspicious even though it's clearly him saying "we should kill him."
also i much preferred the 2d sprites in the "reenactment" segments to the new 3d ones. but i did get used to them. overall, a beautiful game that's the perfect length for a small, concise one-shot, yet containing enough content to provide a full world of characters and mystique! totally recommend for any visual novel or point and click fan who enjoys a family-friendly but spooky vibe. can't wait to see what the studio does next :D
Sooo good!! I loved Tangle Tower, so I was super excited for Mermaid Mask to finally come out :) It was absolutely worth the wait!! It was a delight in pretty much every way, the animations, the writing, the CHARACTERS... I'll really miss them now that I'm done :') It's genuinely worth every penny; if you're on the fence, get it!!! You can really feel the love that the devs poured into this game c:
Reading some of the other reviews, I actually didn't mind that the characters had something to say about every clue; I quite liked this choice! It helped alot with characterizing everyone, and helped me grow attached very quickly to every character ;v; I didn't mind that there wasn't a "puzzle" to solve to figure out who you should show what evidence to, because I liked hearing what people had to say! An issue I had with Tangle Tower was that only a few characters stick out in my memory.. I think adding all this flavor text helped alot with me getting to know every character, and I really appreciate the work that was put into voicing and fleshing out the characters via these clues :) Some may not like the extra girth this adds, but it really feels like a "my steak is too buttery" problem to me! I loved it!
This is probably my Game of the Year for 2026 so far? I really liked Tangle Tower, I love the games' artstyle, writing, and the voice acting in both of them is so so good. The mystery is compelling, and there's new 3D models for the clues that you can rotate around and even sometimes shake. It's just... really really really good!
A longer game than Tangle Tower and well-worth the wait since TT was released! It is a big improvement from Tangle Tower with interesting 3D rendered clues, thoughtful puzzles to solve, engaging characters and a haunting, locked-room murder mystery as the plot.
I played Tangled Tower before this one, so I was excited to hear that this one was coming out soon right after playing! Overall, incredible experience! The team absolutely improved from the previous game! I felt the ending was paced amazing (one of my complaints from last time was a rushed feeling end), and overall I felt the mystery's total time was well put! I could also see where the game was going, but truly didn't figure it all out until the end! Wonderful! My one complaint is how unfortunately, I felt as though many clues and conversations could be done "out of order" per se. I started
With Tadpole and her line of words at the beginning of the game, which lead me to be confused on who everyone was! There were cases like this of being too early, and eventually as things progressed there were cases of the opposite, where I just had to sit through dialogue that gave me hints on things I already solved.
Even with that, I found the characters and overall artstyle of the game to redeem any minor things I had with the game. Plus, extension of the universe was absolutely darling to me! Improved pacing, more content, amazing story, I adore this all! I hope to see what the team makes in the future, count me as a repeat player for sure!
I love it. It's perfect.
SFB Games have done it again. With every one of their Detective Grimoire games they get better and better! Mermaid Mask takes a leap beyond Tangle Tower with another set of wonderful characters, their most interesting setting yet all creating the backdrop for a wonderfully written mystery plot.
This game was wonderful. Character design, voice acting, writing & pacing. Kept me interested the whole game. I love to point and click and explore and this game had everything I wanted. Cannot wait for another one from this studio!
