The Manhole: Masterpiece Edition

Very cute game from the makers of Myst {Cyan}, before they actually made Myst. My 5 year old niece is playing this and the other few games in the Cyan Childrens Pack.

I'm kinda on the fence here, but if you're getting this for a young kid to play, it's probably worth the time. This is more about meeting characters and exploring than being a "noise maker" like Spelunx and Cosmic Osmo. There is actual voice acting! I did get stuck in an elevator with the walrus and was unable to progress, so that was a bit of a bummer. He said I broke the elevator playing with my keyboard! I dunno, man. To run this on a modern machine, you'll need to go to the .exe file and run in compatibility mode, I just used Windows XP, then it will prompt you to install Quicktime. I liked the others a bit better, but you're buying the bundle anyway! Not bad for imaginitive kids who won't mind something that's pretty old at this point.

Not a fan of anthropomorphized animals. Loses novelty fast. You just mostly go through corridors and let the npcs and change of scenery throw you off your expectations. You quickly adapt and start expecting this game's humor and twists... It is not good. They should had tried being more edgy or more out there in the dialogue and banter between characters. This is too tame and odd to be enjoyed by adults and too nonsensical for children. Random on purpose sort of point & click tourism walking simulator style game in which you meet a bunch of anthropomorphized animals. They all have distinct personalities and vaguely undefined reasons for their existence. Everything has this dreamlike quality. However there are also just plain random for no reason moments. Such as clicking on a piece of scenery and being served odd unexpected sound clips to go along with them. Interactivity has a lot of hotspots but is rather limited, and usually just returns a bizzare thing at you and you can do nothing else. Eventually you can explore around, and there are a few moments where the game catches you by surprise, usually by changing perspectives on you such as making you feel much smaller or much taller than you should be based on the previous room you were in. Sort of like an Alice in Wonderland kind of effect. Other than that there is not much to comment about. The game had 4 massive sidebars to the point where it would be best described as: A tiny box centered in the middle of your screen. There were no real puzzles, no dialogue options... Might be nice to have on archive for historical purposes and the game does work. But it is not something I want to have in my permanent library. Removing for declutter.

If you've tried Spelunx as well you may expect pretty much the same concept. This is officially a kids' game, and is about exploring and wandering around. While I found Spelunx rather appealing and impressive this one didn't make me feel the same, It is a colorful and nice world, very imaginative with (relatively) much to explore, and I'm sure I didn't see anything is has to offer (Although I guess you COULD see everything in less than an hour) Still, I found the animal concept rather bizzare, they're dialogues didn't make any sense and I just felt as if I'm missing something. This game feels like you're supposed to have some goal and you just can't figure out what the hell is it. Well, maybe that's what ruined my experience because you have NO goal. Anyway, it's not bad, definitely more fit for kids, and all about exploration and just clicking things around. It's nice on the artistic level but I just didn't feel like I wanted to delve deep into this game.

This was my childhood. It could be yours - retroactively, even.
