The game is an interactive fantasy fiction made to look like a real old book with classic art and meaningful choices that lead to quite different and sometimes abrupt endings (permadeath). There are no dice throws like in Livingstone's games (i.e. The Forest of Doom), no RPG-like stats, just behavior variants to pick. The text is well written, the choices seem logical, so you can more or less predict the outcome, but the story itself is very short, it seems that you can open all the endings through several tries in less than an hour, so it feels like a free demo to something much more serious. Despite its size it is not free of bugs - sometimes you get thrown to the beginning or game just hangs.
The Lords of the Earth Flame is a really short interactive story, with choices and some images here and there. It’s more focused on your choices than on the visuals. I honestly enjoyed this little story, but I strongly recommend getting this title on a sale; it’s too short and the price is a bit high for only a few minutes of entertainment. 6/10. I wish there was a save feature, that would have made the other playthroughs less annoying. Also, the Joker ending was the best, lol.
The game was given to me as a gift, but I would say it is definitely not worth the $5.49 CAD selling price. It contains typos, spelling errors, and is poorly translated into English. If a game (especially a novel game) is going to be published in English, it is very important that the devs have a native English speaker (or 2) proofread the text. Awkward wording broke the immersion many times. I am quite sure even the devs did not check over the story before publishing the game, as in one case I turned right and the story said I turned left. In another case, 2 consecutive pages said the same thing. The game is very buggy. Twice the game froze and I had to force quit, and 3 times it randomly took me back to the first page of the story. The game is very short. I found all endings and completed 100% of the achievements in 48 minutes. The game felt like a demo. The story was not bad, but it really needed to be fleshed out more. The joke ending, however, made me laugh. Well done, devs. One more tip for the devs. When writing dialogue, use quotation marks and make it clear who is talking. Separating dialogue with dashes makes the story very confusing and clunky to read.
This game is an interactive fiction if you love reading you'll enjoy it. The story will be decided by your choices which will lead you to multiple endings, your choices do have consequences either good or bad ones. It was easy to follow the story and unlock many achievements but a couple of them I had to look for a guide in order to know how to unlock it. (the joker one) I liked the fact that the interface is a book which you can flip through the pages and choose the extra pages (your choices) from the bottom of the book to resume reading, I do love books so excuse me for fangirling about books and papers lol. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=883945313 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=897089815 pros: +Interesting story with multiple endings. +Nice glossary for all the characters and places you visited in the story. +Fitting music +Steam achievements. Cons: -As much as I liked the story, it was boring to go through the first part over and over in order to reach some of the choices to change them. If only they add a save button it would have been perfect. -I loved the characters art but.. why the girls not attractive? -No reply value once you get all the endings. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=897091035 I recommend it to people who like to play text-based games and don't get bored while reading fantasy fictions. The Lords of The Earth Flame is a text-based choice and consequence adventure game, similar to the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books. Not only does it play like a book, it also looks like one: we read on and turn the pages as we progress. Set in a unique, eerie and cruel fantasy world, it provides roughly an hour (for me it was 2, since I like to explore and immerse myself in a game) long entertainment. Is it worth taking a look despite its shortness? I'd say yes: although it has some bugs, for an interactive short story, it is quite interesting. We play as a mercenary who's been hired by a merchant, to get a caravan through the Ruby Mountains to the city of Norstein. The task seems simple enough, but complications arise and we have to make tough decisions in order to survive. There are many ways we can reach our goal through multiple endings (or die horribly) and I'd suggest to try almost each one of them out, since - as the developer states - that is how we can enjoy the full game experience. The game usually offers us 2-4 choices after every 3-4 pages and each of our decisions will result in good or bad consequences. At these choices the plot will branch, but at different points they can also merge, bringing us to a (sometimes only seemingly) familiar location. So it's better to be careful, some of these consequences won't be noticeable straight away. Minor differences, such as not doing certain things in a consecutive order, may result in a character's death and lead us to a different ending. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=879962554 So the game is promising, but it does have some disturbing flaws, the most problematic is probably its shortness. If someone isn't interested in all the endings, it can be finished rather quickly: one of them can be reached in 2-3 (!) minutes, while the longest one probably takes roughly 30 minutes. My gameplay time includes everything, I tried every possibilities. So yes, I agree with those who criticize the game for its length, it could indeed have been a bit longer. Another problematic point is that we have to "click" our way through to the point where the story branches, if we'd like to discover another outcome. Backtracking is not allowed, we can go back to a previous page, but just for read-only purposes, so we can't go back to the branching point and pick another answer. I sort of understand this, since that would shorten gameplay time further, but it's not a very user friendly solution nevertheless. A bookmarking option would have been nice not for saving our progress but to save us time. Well, m,ostly because of the shortness of the game its absence is not that terrible. There are quite a few bugs/glitches present. After launching the game, it can jump back to the menu screen or even worse, freeze. Strangely it only happens short after loading the game, never encountered it again afterwards. Another issue is the page recurrence: after clicking the next page button, a page similar to the previous one appeared with ~90% of the shown text matching. It only happened once though. Also the game suffers from ungrammatical sentences and some grammatic errors. They aren't severe ones, but a game that builds so heavily on text, it could have been done better. Where the game really shines at are the little details: as I mentioned before, it sometimes matters in which sequence we do certain tasks (we might not get the opportunity to do something later on again) and even though we have no visible inventory, the game keeps track of what we have in our possession, what we have done, are we alone or do we have others with us. Of course due to the modest length of the game, it never really gets too complicated, it's still a nice touch. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=880008218 The graphics consists of crude drawings, but I found them adequate and fitting. Although a bit more detailed illustrations, like the ones in the old Fighting Fantasy books would have been pleasant, I'm not complaining. The music is atmospheric and doesn't get boring throughout our adventure, doing a great job setting the general eeriness. The lack of sound effects did bother me at first, but on second thought, it's not that big of a problem. After all these numerous problematic areas why do I still recommend the game? Well, because it's fun and enjoyable. Of course it's a shame that it's so short and for all the small little issues it has, which without the game could have been much better. And even though the story and its branches aren't that complex, but they are well written enough and keep us excited throughout (good luck for finding the hidden ending :)). With everything considered, if you are looking for a quick short story for the evening, go ahead, you won't be disappointed. PROS + good, exciting little story + quite a few possibilities + interesting fantasy world + atmospheric music CONS - very short - several pesky bugs - a few ungrammatical sentences RATING 6.5/10
For a $5 game this is interesting. I know that I havent unlocked every ending but there are a good number of ways for things to end. The story can end very early or can go on. I found myself getting more and more intrigued. Definitely play through several times, you'll need to to get the full picture. The world could use just a bit more fleshing out but I tihnk this is pretty good. I'm going to keep digging for more ending because I know there are other ways for this to end. Well worth the $5.
At this moment, the game costs 1€ with 90% discount because of the winter sale. At this price I would recommend the game, and absolutely not at full, or even half price. The game is a bit more than 1 hour, maybe one and a half if you read slower and not focus too hard, and go for all achievements/paths. The writing is stylish though sometimes with weird wording (translation?), but the storyline is compelling, it's just very straightforward, and very short. There are cheaper, longer and all-around better options, but if you want this game, really, try to get it at a deep-deep discount.
I've played a number of CYOA game books, and I like them when they are well-written, but this one is pretty bad. The writing is amateurish and reads like a student project rather than a polished, professional work. There is really only one true path through the story; all of the other routes lead quickly to disaster and death within a few pages. Even the true path can be completed in 15 minutes or less if you make the right choices. The only way I could possibly recommend this is if you want some really easy achievements, and even then you should not pay more than 50 cents for it. If you want to play a game book, any of the ones produced by Tin Man Games would be a far better choice.
So the writing's not much cop, and neither is the story. Some endings are insanely abrupt, and the emotional investment in the "characters" is nil. The aural and visual presentation are, however, rather nifty...though the price is surely someone's idea of a sick joke. This is worth 50% of the current full price, at best. Strict sale material, in other words; and only if you're feeling generous and wish to support indie devs who might, somewhere down the track, show some potential. A pass, but not by much. Verdict: 5/10. An ok story game that reminded me a lot of the choose your own adventure books I used to read as a child. It was maybe ok for the price when it was 2,99€ and 4,99€, but now that they have increased the price to 9,99€ for no reason it is not worth it.
