The Journey Down: Chapter One

The Journey Down: Chapter One is a point and click adventure game where you play as Bwana, who runs a struggling gas station with his brother Kito. They find themselves on an adventure when a scholar named Lina arrives, looking for information about the mysterious Underland. This is really only the beginning of the story, so we only get introduced to the characters and the premise. Bwana is funny and likeable, and while we spend less time with Kito and Lina they seem likeable as well, and the group seems to have a fun dynamic. The story at this point gives us a lot of questions. What is the Underland and why is the Armando Power Company so keen to keep everyone away from it? Why did Bwana and Kito's father leave behind information about the Underland, and did it have anything to do with his disappearance? There are no answers yet but it's a compelling beginning. Gameplay involves exploring the town and solving puzzles. The puzzles didn't totally hold your hand but were definitely on the easy side. There were a couple of places where I had to backtrack because I overlooked something small, and one place where I got a stuck because I didn't realize you could walk to part of the screen, but other than that, everything was pretty straightforward. I really liked the soundtrack and the art style. The backgrounds are hand-drawn and look really nice. The characters and all the animated objects in the game are 3D. The 3D elements sometimes looked a little odd with the flat background. The characters designs are really cool; giving Grim Fandango vibes but taking inspiration from African masks. The voices aren't lip-synced at all, which was a little jarring at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. The soundtrack has jazz and reggae influences, which went well with the setting and was nice to listen to. The Journey Down: Chapter One isn't a complete game, but is a really solid beginning. Although it was fairly short, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next two chapters. 8/10

It's okay, it really shines in its theme the Afro Caribbean style especially its soundtrack. The story is well written and charming. It gives you just enough intrigue and mystery to hint at what’s coming in Episode 2, making it feel like the beginning of something much bigger. The characters, especially Bwana and Kito, are instantly likeable and carry the humour and heart of the game with ease.

An old-school point-and-click adventure game with a standout aesthetic and an intriguing setting. It reminds me a lot of Grim Fandango. Well worth looking into if you've got an itch to solve puzzles and commit petty theft.

[b]The Journey Down: Chapter One[/b] is without a doubt an enjoyable point and click adventure game. It showcases a story of two Caribbeans – Bwana & Kito. Together they run a gas station. Though that doesn’t go that well, which results in debt to an electric company. Eventually they are visited by a woman – Lina – who searches for a journal authored by Kaonandodo. Name that is very close for the brothers, as it is a name of their father. Journal is meant to help Lina reach the Underland. And that’s how it all leads to Bwana promising the freshly met woman to get to the place. That however requires repairing an airplane, which has not lifted to the skies for ages. All in all – the artwork definitely has a lot of uniqueness. The jazzy vibes going on in the background work fantastic for the world we’re landing in. And the voice acting is on point. Plus the humour is absolutely top tier. The area you see might be small, but as it is with point & click games, you’ll have some backtracking. Puzzles are quite enjoyable. Interactions with all the characters are also very fun. One thing you could nitpick on is the fact the game is not released as one full installment, but in form of three chapters put as three separate games. The Journey Down: Chapter One was a fun little game. Now, on to Chapters Two and Three. I expect they will be just as enjoyable. The game was rather short, but I got the bundle on sale, and I'm not complaining. I would recommend it to fans of atmospheric, point-and-click adventures. This fits the bill.

This is a lenient recommendation. I would rather say nah or neutral. Pros.: - The flow of the game. - The world resembles Grim Fandango. - Music is nice. Cons.: - Humor is dull. - Voices. Just terrible mismatch for almost everyone.
