It can get repetitive, but is good for some mindless fun. Don't expect any complex story or mechanism.
"The Hong Kong Massacre" must be a game straight off the streets of Hong Kong, right? Nope, it's from Sweden. This is a 6 year old console (Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch) top down shooter inspired by watching way too many John Woo films with Swedish subtitles, and you do get some of that feeling from the extremely poor translated (text only) dialogue that frames the top down shooting. Being John Woo inspired, the game plays like a top down version of Max Payne only quite a lot worse, with a bit of jank, a few unfixed bugs, and it's really starting to show its age... this wasn't a AAA game in 2019 and it certainly isn't now. But it does carry higher than AAA pricing for a game this old, which immediately disqualifies this from a recommendation. It's not all bad, the animations look cool, the concept is good (Max Payne went down very well), which makes me wish this was a better game. Or done with a less "console first" attitude. There's more. The game does work, but there's some seriously questionable design decisions like locking upgrades and character progression behind your performance on previous levels... you have to get so many "stars" to unlock better guns. The game is quite punishing even on easy levels, twitch reflexes are mandatory... but at the same time the game tries to push itself as a tactical shooter where you need to use cover and positioning before striking. Of course enemies will see you immediately anyway and kill you with lightning reflexes. And none of this works at all well for a top down view... almost no games use that since the advent of 3D graphics provides far better immersion for serious game developers. Of course, this wasn't designed for PC... and that's a problem. This is Steam! The game is short considering the price and can be finished in 4 hours. Developers have at least some responsibility to provide enough content to make a game last a reasonable number of hours proportional to the price if they're serious about providing something of value to gamers. There's less content here than some free game demos. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time and money, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. These flaws make this game fall far short of the professional standards we expect from a modern PC game. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? The Hong Kong Massacre has the utterly unrealistic price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. For comparison, the $20 asking price for this game could get you games like "Yakuza 0", "Age of Empires IV" or "Stray". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. There's enough defects and quality problems with this game that it's really impossible to recommend to gamers.
Just play Hotline Miami Finished the first day/boss and it doesn't feel worth continuing. Mediocre cutscenes, penalization for using the main mechanic of the game, no melee weapons, only 4 weapons and tryhard challenges which makes the progression of weapons tedious. Kind of fun but feels like an unpolished 3D Hotline Miami. The slow motion mechanic was great tho
You can play the game. but if you wanted to do things like upgrade the 4 guns this game gives you. good luck, it doesn't work. refunded on that principal alone. will also not be purchasing any other game this Developer puts out. 5 bucks for a broken title is 5 bucks too much.
Pretty fun game, I enjoy it for being easy to learn but a challenge to play. What I would like to see done better is challenges, who wants to every level with the same challenge? Weak! Needs more varied challenges, collections, and a much better story. Would like to see survival mode, power ups, more weapons, more destructible environments, etc. But hey, the core game is fun!
A fun little game! It's basically a John Woo Hotline Miami with a slow motion mechanic. The story is baaarely there, but you don't really need it anyway cause the 80's Chinese Cop Movie vibes are immaculate. There's not much iteration within the gameplay loop, the only thing they really add is an enemy that takes 2 shots to kill near the end of the game, but it's short enough that it doesn't really get too repetitive. I ended up beating it on Medium in around 4 hours, not sure if I'll go back to try a hard mode completion but I had fun the whole time through! Overall, a very short, fun little game to kill a few hours in your day. Definitely get it on sale though.
