Well-written with some interesting choices. Multiple ways to play.
Far more linear compared to their usual efforts.
Everyone in this story really, really wants you to be an adventurer and hero, despite provding evidence to the contrary in spades. Bless the dutiful idiots and their misplaced ambitions
This was the first Choice of Games title I played, so that perhaps makes me a bit biased towards it. Regardless, though, here is my review of it. Story wise, it's pretty simple. The description really tells you all you need to know - You're a start-up hero in a fantasy world, trying to save a city from an Evil Wizard (TM). The end game is pretty much the same no matter what path you take - Congratulations! You saved the city from the Evil Wizard (TM) and are lauded as a true Hero of Kendrickstone! Not much of a spoiler there, really. In spite of the simplicity, though, it does scratch the "fantasy hero/D&D" itch that no other CoG titles have managed to scratch thus far. The supporting cast, while as cliche as the rest of the game, still manage to be charming in their fantasy tropishness. Mechanically, it's still not the best of the CoG games, either. Only two morality stats, compared to the sometimes five other CoG games have. The attribute system is something only a few other CoG titles can claim to have, but it is still perhaps the simplest of these attribute systems. However, it is unique in that it has a pretty detailed equipment and economy system, where you can spend money to buy permanent equipment, to gain new abilities and skills (Some of which are necessary for certain ways of completing quests), to gain temporary morale boosts which increase all of your attributes for the following quest, or to gain permanent attribute boosts. Unlike some other CoG games where cash is just sort of a show-stat so that you can delight in how much money your character has (A Wise Use of Time comes to mind), The Hero of Kendrickstone actually requires careful management of your bank account - Do you buy that book to learn wilderness tracking techniques, or do you splurge on a nice room at the inn to keep your character chipper and ready to fight the wild beasts? Do you pay the crime lord's protection fee, reducing the amount of money you have to spend on other things, or do you defy him and wake up with a knife in your bedpost, hurting your morale for the next mission? tl;dr: Simple but charming plot, with unique equipment and currency mechanics. 8/10
只是因为作者是Paul才玩的,非常典型的早期Cog. 概念很好,设计也很好,但更像是一本奇幻小说,所谓的选择区别只在于1)能否成功 2)用刀还是魔法. 剧情相对线性
Good
This game was truly great. Even with the anxiety it caused when trying to handle money correctly. But it was fun, and I will play it over and over again!
Short enjoyable romp. Not overly complex but good fun. Did not actually take 3 hours to complete as the game was left loaded while I did other stuff.
