I used to rely like this game back in the day, So when I found it was on steam I ordered it right away. The problem is that it's just not compatible with modern systems. I have 3 computer's a PC a laptop and a windows tablet and this game crashes on all 3. It just shouldn't be sold until all the many issues are fixed.
After a rough start and technical issues with Steam, the game has now been updated and runs just fine from inside Steam, WITH the Steam overlay enabled! Developers provided a fix / update that resolves the issue everyone was having, so basically all the angry negative reviews pointing out technical issues (mine was one of those) need to be updated. With the technical problems out of the way, the game is a very enjoyable classic point-and-click adventure with all the inventory puzzles and light-hearted humor your heart desires! Very pleasant visuals and that special Monkey Island overall vibe. 3.5 / 5 stars on Adventure Gamers dot com - "A series of small issues prevent it from shining as brightly as it could have, but its fun puzzles in a cool setting make Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island an entertaining adventure."
The game would be interesting enough, but it's ruined by waiting. Either because there is some weird black screen right after going to another room, or because you have to watch your character move across a room, or, most annoyingly, because you can't skip any text apparently. Every time you examine something - and you do that a lot - the character will actually speak the text you can read. So far so good, a nice voice-over is always welcome. However, any well designed game should offer the option to SKIP the voice-over. I probably could read the text a dozen times while the character is still droning on about it. As nice as the voices are, after a while I don't need to listen to them every time - especially if it's something I've heard several times already. To confound that problem, the puzzles are not necessarily something you'd call obvious, so you need to try a lot of stuff - and have to listen to the characters over and over again. If you've got lot of patience and time - go ahead, try it. The graphics are quite nice, the voices are alright. It's really mainly the UI that kills it.
I love this game, and since its rating was so negative due to spending so many months being unplayable for the majority (game worked fine for me), I felt I needed to help balance reviews now that a patch was finally issued. All I need to say is that Monkey Island was 'my' video game, back in my teen years. I finished the second episode over the phone with a friend I was trying to solve puzzles with. I love all of the episodes, even the last two. I try to buy every pirate-themed game I can find, especially those with a comedic side. Vooju Island was one such 'find', back in the day. So, yes, it's Bill Tiller's shameless attempt at making his own Monkey Island follow-up after he left LucasArts. I never found him to be crucial to the Monkey Island mythos, however Vooju managed to make me laugh and, most importantly, I got attached to the characters. Yes, the game has many flaws. But it also got what mattered right, at least what mattered to me: story, atmosphere and characters. tl;dr: if you want to play a Monkey Island-like game, buy a Monkey Island game. If you've finished them all, buy Vooju Pirates and Jolly Rover, the two best MI copycats around.
About the game. As a big fan of the Monkey Island series I can't really say it belongs in the same group. Ghost Pirates has the exact same controls as Curse of Monkey Island, the same art style and it's about pirates. But it lacks a bit in the humour department. Some puzzles aren't really logical and after much trial and error I just looked up the answers. Most of the time the order of things was incorrect or some small thing just popped up in a place where I just looked before. Encountered numerous problems starting the game, looking at the discussions I'm not the only one. Eventually I got it running by forcing it to use my onboard graphics. Using a video card just wouldn't work. However problems left asside I did enjoy the game and would recommend it when it's on sale. Looking at my play time I've finished it in about 10 to 12 hours.
Ghost Pirates tries to be a good game but comes out flat and bland. not being able to skip dialog also makes it long winded and just adds to the boring part. i feel like they wanted to be a monkey island but it just ended up hurting them in the end because it just came off as them trying to hard. the story does its job but the characters try to hard to be funny and likable but don't do a good job at it. i do feel the target audience was young adults and in this respect i could see people of that age enjoying this. its colorful and has a passable story but lacks a real soul. if you're really into monkey island maybe give it a try but for others i'ed pass on this until you have played some of the better point and clicks. 4.5/10
I've played A vampyre story from this develper a long time ago, it was a great game. Now i have finally decided to try Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island and it's a fine game, not very good, just good adventure game, 7.5/10 for me. People who have problems on win 10 just do this. Go to game folder, find main.exe right click, properties > compatibility check 3 boxes > run in 640x480 you wont see difference Disable display scaling Run as administrator click OK. Game runs fine for me win 10 64bit It could be that only run as admin is the solution, i've saw this 3 on some forums, so i checked them all it doesent really matter as long as it's working. HF Edit Also install RAD tools from this link http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm it will help with some cutsene blackscreen bugs
This game is a mixed bag. Recommended only for 5 Euro or less.
If you played A Vampyre Story than you know what to expect. This games is very similar but actually worse from technical point of view. Also just as with vampire Mona’s adventure Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island have some undeniable charm in it (and no, I’m not talking about Jane’s “treasure chest”;) ). Pros

Beautiful backgrounds
Quite OK story that could be a lot more than it is
Likable characters – to bad that during the game there was so little character development
Clever way of making inventory a lot more realistic (characters do not carry few tons of stuff in their pocket) – the same mechanism as in A Vampyre Story
Cons

Voice acting – characters uses exotic accents that could be not to your liking (again similar as with A Vampyre Story)
Puzzles – be prepared for some twisted logic, surprising solution and lack of clues (often even game characters are suppressed by what they did by putting random things together)
Sound quality varies - in moves sound is compressed and reminds me of very old mp3 files (under 128 kbps), some parts of dialogs are recorder much quitter then other, sometimes you can even hear clear studio noises that were not cut out from dialogs (how the heck did it get pass QA process)
Horrible character animation – except of bouncing breasts (looks like developers did put a lot of attention to this aspect overlooking everything else ;) )
Out of hundreds of gags and one-liners maybe 5 were actually funny
Graphic Glitches - here and there
A little bit short – 7-8 hours of play

Cosa rispondiamo, dunque?
Sadly this is an example of how a good point and click adventure game shouldn't look like. Story could be even interesting… three different characters - Vooju Priest, fatty pirate cook and pirate lady captain; forced to somewhat work together to save the world from Vooju Witch and an old evil sleeping deep inside a volcano. Game is equally divided between our heroes - you can switch between them freely when they still have something to do, they can even give advice to each other on how to proceed in a particular situation (although I have found this a little bit lacking). You spent half of the time as ghosts with limited skills and possibilities which can be nicely seen on the inventory system - you don't have everything on you, the hero will just note it for future references so you don't go around with a large boulder or something like that (remember Simon's hat? ;D). All of this sounds all right, now to the negative points. When you click on items you get description / comment on it from the characters, that's fine, pretty normal in adventures. Sadly you can't skip them. So, when you are thinking what to do next (happens a lot) and you examine the items you can work with you have to listen to all of the lines again. Some of them were rather long and after a while it turned out to be annoying. Moving between screens is delayed by black screen each time you go somewhere… not that I can't wait, but it disturbs the immersion of the situation. There are subtitles 'in game', but not during the cutscenes which was a little troublesome as I am not native English speaker and some of the characters speak with strong accents so I had a problem with keeping up with them and again it disturbs the immersion. Graphic is okay, I am just a bigger fan of 2D or pixel graphics I think. Story seemed to be a little bit rushed and the ending was a rather disappointing one as there wasn't any real conclusion to it. There were plans for a sequel which were not realized, only some spin-off. Some moments of the game are enjoyable, with good jokes and many referrals on popular culture, but the overall experience was sadly rather boring.
