The worst game I ever got from Humble Bundle.
I don't even know where to start. - It's a bug-ridden mess: the font doesn't load right the first time you open the inventory, the edges of the screen are cut off in 4:3 ratio, attacks just plain aren't detected at times, etc. - The combat is incredibly boring: click when an enemy is in range (which knocks them back), wait for them to trudge their way up to you again... click again. Repeat ad nauseam. - The graphics are bad even by indie pixel standards, animations are practically nonexistent; the NES had better visuals than this - the music is literally the same 2 seconds long tune looping over and over again, which gets grating within minutes All in all, it's the sort of game one would make by following a tutorial for Game Maker, not something one would put on Steam for others to buy. 0/10 - I wouldn't even play it for free.
This thing seems to have generated a considerable amount of views, playthroughs and reviews since as I'm reading it happened that it's been given away on Humble Bundle too, and its monstrous price of 8€/$ really should be there for some serious reason.. Being made in Unity anyways this crappy bugged mess has two funny graphic options, namely "heaven on earth" and "literally garbage" - this one fits the game, and needless to say, there's barely any kind of distinction since graphics look like they've been taken from a Commodore 64 game. At least some sense of humour there. The players focused on one aspect - the bugs. This game is indeed, in my playthroughs too, hugely bugged. Often, you'll have long freezes even on the "crappy" graphics option, often the controls won't respond, you'll find yourself hanging in the middle of nowhere after jumping on some boxes or simply you'll open the inventory just to find out that you'll be able to equip weapons you haven't obtained yet, and it goes on forever. There are literally bugs on every level. Plus, the game itself has barely a "story" of a few lines and most of all, the battle system is horrendous. You'll have just the chance to jump with the spacebar (risking every single time to get stuck in mid-air or such) and click with the left mouse button - that's all for the combat system. If you wanna cheat as I said, exploit the bugs by pressing keys such as O - for some reason, even in the very first levels you'll have access to broad axes, golden swords and so on. Plus, the tutorial is only given at the beginning of the game through some short speeches, so that you won't be able to get back and recall the hotkeys or anything else you forgot.. so for instance, the health bar will disappear and you'll have to try everything in order to get it back. Or even worse, in the middle of a room your left mouse button will for no reasons at all stop working, and that's your only way to kill the enemies - so you'll be forced to run around, get killed or flee through the doors - if you remember all the hotkeys, of course. Another bug of minor sort I found is that the soundtrack is very likely to stop without a reason, in the middle of a level.. but ok, that's a minor point. The huge issue is that this game is really hard to play due to its heavy bugs that affect the gameplay experience. And that one, along with the crappy graphics, sucks. You'll have just to progress like a dungeon crawler, killing enemy zombies and phantoms and opening new doors, all in the same setting. You can overcome the bugs by, for instance, turning on and off the inventory (I key) or the whole dialogue screen (P key), or by changing your weapons (O key), but they will not only come over again 2 minutes later - they will also keep on affecting you during the time you spend trying to resolve them. You'll find out that your new weapon will deal two blows and it will randomly disappear, or that the left mouse button will work only if you keep on closing the dialogue window. There are bugs everywhere - I found myself, after dying once, to be able to run thrice as faster than normally and to hold weapons that I never even have seen before. Plus, it's quite frustrating since all the weapons actually aren't -different weapons- as the Steam store page says ("more than 60 unique weapons") - rather, they are the same 4-5 basic swords, knives or bows drawn with a different color, always in a pixel style, dealing who knows how more or less damage. I found cycling with the O key a weapon that looked like a road sign and was able to kill every enemy in the whole screen - if you're lucky that the left mouse button works, of course. All in all, this game must be downvoted for so many reasons that I can't even know where to start. Its price is unbelievably high, and it's a dungeon crawler filled with bugs offering no fun at all. I think it's pointless to add something about the other Steam store claims, like "over 1 million costume combinations".. This crap goes on like a dungeon crawler, you can find free Flash -working- games everywhere like this. There's basically no story, even if some dialogues are funny, but there are no incentives that will push you to go through another door, another '80s-like 2D screen and see what's on the other side. Anways, given the high price and the bugs, in my view this game has to be avoided at all costs - not even for free it can give a valuable amount of entertainment, let alone for its huge price. The core of this game is - kill enemies, collect things, get through doors and repeat forever. I hardly think even a roguelike lover can enjoy this buggy mess.
I don’t normally write reviews for games let alone bad ones. But I feel it’s important to note that this game is awful by every objective quality that makes a game bad. First, I only got it in the humble bundle 2018. So, I am not upset that I spent money on it. However, I can’t in any good faith recommend that anyone pay any amount of money for this game in its current state. The game is broken and often controls will stop working. The combat is awful. The stats mean nothing because all you do is smack what is in front of you. And it dies whenever it feels like it. You can’t switch weapons in mid combat unless you click ‘I’ then use your mouse to click the weapon you want. And even than when you switch the weapon it 60% of the time becomes broken and you can’t use it. Oh, also you can’t rebind any keys. This game feels like someone watched HOW TO MAKE GAME ON UNITY tutorials on YouTube then slapped a $7.99 price on it. I think the devs knew this because by clicking “o” on the keyboard you open basically cheat by swapping trough all the alleviable weapons in the game making playing the game a moot point. 1/10 why its not 0/10 and the 1 point. I enjoyed the intro of the game. I am not hating here this could be a cool game, but it needs more LOVE and CARE in making it before you can ask for $7.99. If this game was free no one would have a right to complain. TL;DR Bad game. Don’t buy.
There were 4 achievements that were near impossible to get. Went to discord, asked the dev (a totally cool person) to remove them so that us completionists would have another perfect game. Now i have 9/9 cheevos, dev is nice, dev is awesome. Good luck with future projects <3
非常有趣的小游戏。 It's a really funny game. 参加一个小活动获得的激活码。 I get the key by attending to a game. 偶尔闲来无事打开玩就停不下来了。 Once I open it,I can't stop. 可惜还没通关,太手残了,哈哈 I haven't complete the final stage because I'm not talented at playing games.haha 总之游戏还是不错的,挺喜欢。 In a few words,an excellent game.
$8 are you kidding? This is like something that would've been released for free 20 years ago as a joke. Graphics and sound, bad, gameplay, bad, story, basically nonexistent. I still have to think this is a joke, except that's real money being asked for.
非常垃圾的游戏,不知所以的内容,糟糕的操作
Игра хорошая, если не играть!
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
The Haunting of Billy starts with an interesting take on roguelike gear by having you build a character out of the pieces of your enemies. Unfortunately, this concept isn't executed in an interesting way, instead just being a reskin of a standard gear system. Big missed opportunity for the game to stand out. The combat is barebones and well below average for the genre. Ultimately, the game needed to be more ambitious, rather than just playing it safe.
Janky but enjoyable! too bad it got abandoned and never saw new content for it 5/10
