I'm a big P&C adventure game fan. I've been playing them since the Infocom text adventure games in the 1980's. So I like what Hand of Glory is trying to do as a traditional P&C game and went into it strongly biased towards it and expecting and wanting to enjoy it. But my God, this game is just terrible. There are various annoyances -- ridiculously bad animations that you are frequently forced to sit through as characters wander slowly around scenes, some pretty terrible voice acting outside the fine main character, pretty bad artwork, mostly pretty bad puzzles -- but BY FAR what really kills this game is just simply terrible writing. Hand of Glory is very clearly trying to plagiarize the Gabriel Knight games. Some elements also lifted from the Broken Sword games, but mostly it's trying to copy the broad outline of GK3 in particular. If you're going to try to copy some of the great games in the genre's history and thus plainly putting your game up for comparison with them, you better not deliver such a badly constructed, ludicrous story as this. And it's not just, or even primarily, that the story is so bad, it's that the game's developer apparently wrongly thinks it's so good that he needs to force feed it to the player in way, way too much expository dialogue and cut scenes that just drag on and on and on and get stupider and stupider and more and more boring all through the game. Perhaps the single more ridiculous moment was a "shocking" revelation at the end of chapter 1 about the main character that was so out of nowhere and so silly that I actually laughed out loud (the only time the game made me laugh despite lots of failed attempts at humor) at what was supposed to be some kind of tragic, serious moment. Maybe I should have just cut my losses at that point, but I kept pushing on through the second chapter, which was a lot worse than the first in being SO overloaded with the increasingly moronic story.
Nettes Point & Click-Adventure! Teil! :)
The Hand of Glory, developed by Madit Entertainment and Daring Touch, is a lovingly crafted point-and-click adventure that combines the spirit of classic detective stories with an undercurrent of mystery and the supernatural. It tells the story of Lazarus Bundy, a disgraced Miami detective whose career has been overshadowed by failure and self-doubt. When the disappearance of a wealthy young woman, Kathrin Mulzberg, crosses his path, Lazarus sees a chance for redemption. What begins as a routine investigation quickly expands into something far larger—a web of intrigue that spans continents, delving into ancient secrets, shadowy organizations, and moral conflicts that test the limits of reason and belief. At first glance, The Hand of Glory feels like a return to the golden era of adventure gaming. Its hand-drawn visuals, layered puzzles, and methodical pacing all echo the traditions of genre classics like Gabriel Knight or Broken Sword. Yet, beneath its nostalgic surface, it introduces a level of narrative complexity and character depth that gives it a modern edge. The art style immediately captures attention: colorful but grounded, with a slightly stylized approach that emphasizes atmosphere over photorealism. Each scene—whether the sunny streets of Miami, the decaying ruins of Italy, or the eerie interiors of hidden sanctuaries—has its own sense of place and mood. The environmental design reflects not only the tone of the story but also Lazarus’s shifting mindset as he moves from cynicism and sarcasm toward obsession and self-reflection. The visual storytelling plays a large part in creating immersion, and while the animations can be a bit stiff at times, the artistry and composition more than make up for it. The gameplay structure adheres to classic adventure logic: exploration, inventory management, and puzzle-solving. Every scene offers a variety of interactive elements that range from straightforward object combinations to intricate, multi-step challenges. Some puzzles are grounded in detective reasoning, requiring the player to think like an investigator, connecting evidence and dialogue clues to progress. Others lean toward creative abstraction, occasionally demanding unconventional leaps of logic. This variety can be both the game’s strength and its weakness. When puzzles align perfectly with the story, they feel natural and satisfying, but when they become too opaque, progress can stall, leading to moments of frustration. The absence of an extensive hint system reinforces its old-school philosophy, rewarding perseverance but potentially alienating players accustomed to modern quality-of-life features. One of the game’s most engaging features is its character dynamic. Lazarus Bundy’s gruff, world-weary demeanor contrasts sharply with that of Alice Sharp, his younger, intelligent, and somewhat idealistic assistant. Their partnership develops organically through sharp dialogue and a balance of humor and tension. Alice’s background in technology complements Lazarus’s more instinctive approach, creating opportunities for teamwork-based puzzles and dialogue-driven decisions that deepen their bond. Their exchanges provide levity amid the story’s darker turns, and both characters evolve in believable ways as the narrative progresses. What begins as a reluctant partnership slowly transforms into a relationship built on trust, mutual respect, and shared determination. This interplay humanizes the story, ensuring that the investigation never feels detached from the people behind it. The Hand of Glory is also notable for its tonal balance between realism and the supernatural. While it begins firmly rooted in the logic of police work and forensics, the narrative gradually transitions into the realm of myth and occult symbolism. This shift is handled with restraint at first, hinting through visual motifs and cryptic dialogue before revealing the full scope of its otherworldly elements. The writing does a commendable job of maintaining tension during this shift, though some later developments feel abrupt or overly ambitious. Still, the game’s ability to blend grounded detective storytelling with historical and mystical layers gives it a unique identity within the genre. The supernatural is not treated as spectacle but as a thematic extension of the characters’ search for truth—both in the external mystery and within themselves. The atmosphere is heightened by an evocative soundtrack and careful sound design. Ambient noises—such as rain against stone walls or the hum of neon in city scenes—blend naturally with the score, creating a sense of intimacy and tension. The music ranges from melancholic piano melodies to suspenseful strings, guiding the player’s emotions without overshadowing the narrative. Voice acting varies in quality, with some performances conveying strong emotion and personality while others feel less polished. Nevertheless, the dialogue is consistently engaging, full of wit, subtle humor, and moments of introspection that enrich the story’s tone. Technically, the game performs well, with responsive controls and a clean interface that fits comfortably within the genre’s traditions. The inventory and journal systems are easy to navigate, and hotspots are clearly defined, minimizing unnecessary pixel hunting. Despite this, there are occasional minor issues, such as animation stiffness or small logic inconsistencies, which remind players of the game’s indie origins. However, these flaws never overshadow its ambition or craftsmanship. The pacing, particularly in the second half, can feel uneven as the story becomes more expansive, yet the underlying momentum remains strong enough to carry the player through to its conclusion. Narratively, The Hand of Glory succeeds not just because of its mystery, but because it has emotional weight. Lazarus’s arc is one of personal redemption, and his struggles with guilt, obsession, and the desire for meaning are written with care and maturity. The plot is layered with philosophical undertones about belief, responsibility, and the nature of truth. While some threads are left unresolved or intentionally ambiguous, this openness fits the game’s noir-inspired sensibilities. It leaves players reflecting not just on the case they’ve solved, but on the moral cost of the journey that led them there. Ultimately, The Hand of Glory stands out as a modern adventure game that honors the past while carving its own path. It offers the deliberate pacing, layered puzzles, and narrative intrigue that genre enthusiasts crave, wrapped in an art style that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. Its imperfections—a few uneven puzzles, some uneven pacing, and variable performances—are outweighed by its heart and ambition. For players who appreciate narrative depth, atmospheric world-building, and a story that lingers beyond its final scene, this is a mystery worth unraveling. The Hand of Glory is not just a homage to classic adventure games; it is proof that the genre still has the power to surprise, captivate, and move its audience in ways few others can. Rating: 9/10
The Hand of Glory è una classica avventura grafica punta e clicca, con protagonisti Lazarus e Alice. Amanti delle avventure e simpatizzanti come me, vi consiglio di acquistare The Hand of Glory, rimarrete soddisfatti e aiuterete un team italiano davvero talentuoso.
Tldr A very satisfied kickstarter backer. If you like point and click adventure games especially ones like broken sword games you should play this .interesting story which was funny also a allot darker then you might expect from looking at the art .Lazerus and alice are a great leads/duo.fully voiced and great art .Looking forward to when part two comes out.
Found the game to be really enjoyable. It starts out fairly grounded in reality but (especially in the second half) magic comes into it, and it actually works really well. It manages to mix comedy, a decent detective story, and supernatural themes without any big hiccups and that is quite rare. 8/10 - a must play adventure game in my book.
A real hidden gem! The story is really interesting, and the characters are really likeable. I'm surprised by the length too, you get a lot of bang for your buck! I recommend it for anyone who likes classic point and click adventure games. The puzzles are challenging, but not impossible.
