Better than I expected. If you like old school JRPGs, you'll like this.
Been sinking quite some time into this game the last few weeks and I am really liking it so far. Great story (love the dnd touch of the story), and very active developers (resolved an issue I found in a very short timeframe and were very responsive and communicative throughout the process). Also, a game that actually requires some strategy for the more central battles, which I really appreciate considering how much hand-holding a lot of games do nowadays. Overall a warm recommendation from my side for this one.
This is a great JRPG in the classic vein of OG JRPGs but with nice modern flairs like finishing a dungeon and just teleporting out vs. having to walk out ALL the way back you came. The story is very compelling so if you enjoy a good story, this is starting out to be a great game with different characters coming and going from the party.
good game.
I am 4 hours in and i sadly have to say there isnt anything about this game that others dont do much better. If i had to sum it up the game is simply too bland. Combat is basic, story is amateur hour stuff, world isnt interesting, cliche after cliche, unoriginal characters. + custom artstyle and assets. Cant see the usual RPGM assets which is a good thing + music is good + a lot of companions, good companion system + non combat skills add nice flavour to the game without being obnoxious + detailed journal, character sheet + progression seems decent, balance isnt too bad in my 4 hour gameplay +- combat is your basic RPGM turn based stuff. Nothing original here. - too expensive at full price. 17€ for this type of game is insanely high. For this much there are a lot of better games out there. - everything is just bland fantasy stuff - story, lore, locations, companions. - story is my biggest gripe with the game. Its just amateur work, nothing interesting going on, dialogues are terribly bad. If you enjoy your story and dialogues this game isnt it. Reads like 15yo fanfic stuff. Characters from the past speak with Shakespear like language which just doesnt fit at all. - companions lack depth and most of them are very basic archetypes. Warrior dwarf who likes to drink bear, an elf that loves the nature, just and plain good paladin character. There is no depth there, nothing interesting. If the story, gameplay, companions or the world arent interesting there is no reason for me to continue the game. I finished these RPGM games and this one is the worst of those. > Forever Home > Last Dream > Skyborn > Divided Reign
Let me just get my rating out of the way to start. 2/5. Now as for my reasons. First off, this game is grindy; and when I say grindy, i mean GRINDY. I'm normally happy to have some grind in a game, but the problem is that's what MOST of my time spent in this game was, and not before I reached end: In order to progress I often had to stop and simply grind random encounters for about 1-2 hours between plot points. That's.... not something that you should really have to stop and do during normal gameplay. If I HADN'T had to grind, this game would have been super quick as well: If I was just playing the actual story, it would most probably only be about a 20 hour game; with grinding, before you reach the end, you're looking at 40-60 if you're going to be skipping the super boss (Which is ALSO the actual find boss, so don't expect a satisfying story/ending if you do that!) Now, I should add that grinding end game is HEAVILY dependent on getting a key item called the celestium sword so you can insta-kill the rare super XP monsters... the problem is you ONLY get this item if you've been being absurdly focused on collecting all the misseable collectable shards in the game. So if you get to endgame and haven't got enough shards to get that sword, go ahead and go home, you're done: You can't grind at a reasonable rate if you can't reliably kill the rare encounters, as the leveling experience (Which is STILL super long and grindy) is seemingly balanced around that. Next up, story: You're in for a fairly barebones plot with heavy D&D inspiration, and a host of characters, most of whom are fairly forgettable. Don't expect much. I could spend a whole paragraph detailing issues here (For starters, atrius, your supposed best friend at the start, comes off as a raging sociopath that you just can't empathize with, especially since he's the entire reason for your characters horrific evil actions right after.), but I'll just try and keep it focused there. Now, are there good things? Well... its a functional RP, so there's that. And while I do think its mediocre, there ARE some good spots (Wein being a decently depicted paladin instead of a stereotype for example). but its just not enough to rescue it from the heap. Don't buy this game, 2/5, there are much better RPGs out there.
I put nearly 60 hours into the game and, while it is clearly the most epic RPG Maker game that has ever existed and clearly a labor of love for some fantastic storyteller/dungeon master to translate their well-crafted homebrew gameworld into a computer game, I have simply lost patience with the absurd lack of balanced game design. After suffering through easily 100 boss fights requiring multiple playthroughs in that hope that this time, the super kill everyone move won't be used, I just can't do another. I made it to the final chapter and that will have to be "game beaten" for me. It's too bad because I would have liked to finish it.
