If you or someone you know has been bullied,I would highly recommend skipping this game

The Fog Knows Your Name

Summary:
Rex is dead, and everyone back home thinks you killed him. Returning back home after the death of your classmate, you find that things are stranger than ever. The fog is thicker, the neighbors are more aggressive, and you feel danger around every corner. Live, die, and if you play your cards right, figure out what the history is behind what’s haunting your town.
The Good:
- I was Bamboozled: I came into this game thinking I wouldn’t like it, despite being a massive horror fan. I only ended up picking it up by chance way-back-when, and was stunned at what I found. I’m not sure how else to explain this, but this is one of my all-time favorite games—not just text-based games, but ALL games. The writing is really impressive, although not style-heavy. The plot is engaging. It is one of the only horror games from COG that really revels in the horror. It’s the horror movie that never got made, but that I would’ve loved. 10/10 recommend if you like horror and mystery. - The Horror: The horror is the best part of this game. Period. It gives time period hauntings, liminal spaces, and you-pissed-off-mother-nature vibes. Then, combine that with the personal horror of having the people in your community turn against you, of the very real and likely horror of being on the cusp of graduation and losing your friends, the loss of family, and the emptiness that comes from someone young and near to you dying. This, to me, is a masterclass in internal and external-based horror—and it’s done so well. - The Mystery: This game doesn’t pitch itself as a mystery, and I don’t think that it needs to because of how well the horror is written, but the mystery aspect of the game is a really impressive component. There are three big mysteries in this game, all of which are solvable. To say too much would deny people of the experience, BUT let me just say that the everything unfolds naturally, the mysterious elements are logical and massively fulfilling to solve. - The Characterizations : BEGONE STEREOTYPES. I feel like sometimes in text-based games, more than getting individual characters, you get character archetypes. This is the popular guy, or this is the flirtatious character, this is the serious one, yada yada yada. It’s fine; that’s a character shorthand that works for some, but it makes it even more impressive when games like this really round out their characters. Everyone here has hopes and dreams unrelated to the main character; they have a sense of individuality that I would love to see more in all writing. With that individuality comes a greater sense of diversity in how they respond to each event, and makes both spending time with them one-on-one and as a ground more entertaining. - The Setting : Am I the only nerd who loves island towns for horror? The setting of this place feels like somewhere with character history and regional history. This made the horror of things not seeming right stand out effectively. Plus, seeing things go wrong made me understand why my character would be more invested in seeing out the potentially dangerous things they were doing. - The Little Stories : I’ve played this a couple times (re: many, many times), mostly on my phone, but I decided to do a completely differently playthrough this time and I found out completely new information? This game is one where I keep replaying, and keep learning more. - The MC: Can I give a hot-take? I’d rather be asked once about my characters relationship with their father and have that effect how my character relates to a particular event, than answer 20 questions about my character’s clothing type and not have it come up or matter at all. Every question about your character, from how they are processing grief, to how they approach problem solving mattered to the plot. Because this mattered, my character felt way more nuanced, and the plot was personal and specific to that character. This is another reason I really enjoyed replaying the game. - A Little Stat Punishing – I didn’t mind this, but I thought I’d include it sense other reviews noted it. The stats matter in terms of your success trying to do things. I liked this actually, it gave a bit more gravitas to the plot and encouraged me to stick to my roleplaying. It also made my choices actually matter! - The Truth :
was worth solving! My goodness.

The Not So Good:
- Forgiveness is the default :
All I’m going to say is that if someone pulls a gun on you, I don’t think you’d want to hear from them EVER AGAIN.

Suggestions for New Players:
• Pay attention to your stats • Talk to your mom! The mom is alive! Isn’t that rare??!?!?! And she’s a good mom! I really liked her. • Actually try multiple playthroughs
You’ll Like This If:
• You like mysteries and horror. • You’ve got a wicked imagination.
Actually the first book that INFURIATED ME with it's stats gameplay. It's virtually impossible to intuit what answers would work based on your stats, and I'm usually pretty good at it. You pick something that all common sense says you *should* be able to succeed - and you don't. Writing is good and the story seems interesting but I'm at chapter 4 and I'm already done with this stats nonsense. YMMV, buy at your own risk.
This is one of the best text adventures I have read and I've been reading these and playing visual novels for over ten years now. I really love the characters, the story, and the writing. The amount of different ways the story branches is amazing but I stuck to one way of doing things. I got a good ending but it was bittersweet. This game reminds me of Wicked Willow on Steam and there is another game like this in the Choices app called the It Lives series as well as Endless Summer if you want to play other great games! This one is also like Our Life Beginnings and Always in some ways. Personally, this is probably one of my favorite text adventures. I did whatever I wanted but then I redid the game and got a good ending but this game is harsher than real life my gosh. It was a great game though - everything was paced well, the writing was amazing, I got really attached to the characters, and found my ending emotional and satisfying. I agree that high school games can be hard to play after you become an adult but anyone in a crossroads at their life can relate to this game.
i'm so glad i learned how to read
6.5/10...? It's okay, but not that impressive

Stephen King style writing,
