It is interesting, fun, and quite deep. But it needs some achievements!
Nocked has it all and then some more! Robin Hood is a myth and story truly, beyond a doubt, overdone and oversaturated in all media. I think on that we are all agreed. So how is it then that the most interesting, unique and magical version of this tale comes in form of a choose-your-own-adventure indie game that is so incredibly underrated? What makes Nocked truly special for me is perhaps its atmosphere and tone. It really balances out the sense of adventure and discovery with a certain sense of humor and spirit. This is a tale that is far more focused on the mythology and magic than most Robin Hood tales, concerning itself with spirits, faeries, ogres and dragons as much as taxes, knights and peasant troubles. The Deepwood of Sherwood Forest feels like a living entity and a battlefield of conflicting factions and figureheads. Robin and his/her Merry Men can create something special in these woods, all the while battling the tyranny of the Sheriff and Prince John. That's where the game shines as well, the amount of choice and directions to take. There are a couple of really big events that you can approach in a variety of ways, but there is also the everyday decisions that influence how you expand your base, curry favor with England's factions and help your comrades along the way. This is a game where you can miss or lose half your band of companions depending on your choices, but also one where every discovery and every choice feels rewarding as it comes back at some point to reward or bite you. Whenever something my Robin did in a side-quest suddenly has effects on my choices later in the game I did a giddy fist pump, because it truly feels like there is meaning in every detail. I would be remiss not to mention the romantic entanglements as well. Part of any good story is a sweltering romance between the daring rogue and some lovely companion and Nocked works wonders in this area too. Whether you are Lord Robin or Lady Robin, you get your fair assortment of lovers to court. There is something for everyone, be it straight, gay or lesbian relationships. From the main heroine, Lady Marian, to a dragoness or a handsome Lord, the cast is colorful and not shy of good choice. Of course you are able to simply stay friends with all your companions and not let romance distract you at all. Finally I would add that the lovely illustrations and thematic music really helped this story stand out from other choose-your-own-adventure games as I know them. This felt less like reading a novel and more like an interactive game, which is certainly a preference of mine. Be it the beautiful handdrawn landscapes or those certain tunes that are stuck in my ears now, I loved getting immersed in 12th century England. If you want experience Robin Hood like you never did before and with choices that really let you carve out your own path, then please give Nocked a try. Its asking price is more than fair for the amount of well written content you get delivered to your screen.
Yeah! For the enthusiasts of text-based adventures or if you simply know how to operate a book... This game not only gives you what you maybe want/need... But it also comes with love! Love that was poured from the depths of the Developer and into this game! Want to play the game but don't know anything about Robin Hood? Completely fine! You'll still more than enjoy this bountiful adventure! Want to play as a stealthy man? Or were your perhaps interested in a more female character? YOU CAN be either! Romance?! This game has that too! Stat building? Or something akin to it? Oh boy! As always it may seem like a lot at first (not really THAT much...) and then... You start to get into it and get it. Isn't that how it always works? Heh heh. Take a stand together with a band of Merry Men and Women and supernaturals and wolves and a dragon and all others that come around...! To take on the enemy..! ...HELL YEAH! Not that good at imagining things? The game provides you with silhouettes (this word is really weird and hard to spell) and even pretty backgrounds! This whole thing will be accompanied with some flute-like (and other instruments) music for your hearing pleasure! (Like something a bard might play? :D) Oh and if all that isn't enough? You'll be playing/reading this game for hours! Variations! Variations!! Variations!!! So many paths to choose... Which one will be next...? Only you will know! Thanks. Seriously thanks. It's my go to game when I feel like sneaking around and sabotaging things... Or frolicking in the meadows. Good stuff. :D :> =3
I absolutely loved this game. It's a wonderful take on Robin Hood and other myths - both unique and original while also maintaining the great story beats and characters - and also a wonderful take on the tradition of text adventures. It really feels like there are infinite ways to play, and I could reply loads of times and face different challenges, while there are still things to learn and master that would be present each time, like in a game like Zork. On top of this, though, the writing is spectacular, and I really fell in love with all of the characters, and cared deeply about the story. And the art work and music are gorgeous! I love this version of Sherwood, with it's deep magic and mystery, and I love the challenge of balancing factions, helping people, and saving my friends. Absolutely wonderful game. Would highly reccommend. I wish more people knew about this game!
Worth every penny, a very deep choose your own adventure that plays like something from the golden age of PC gaming. The silhouette graphics don't seem like much, but Schneider did an amazing job using small details to make this game more immersive. The gold/renown/men/power mechanics are complex enough that they move this well into game territory from just being a visual novel, and I am amazed how many hours I've gotten out of it in replayability. If you haven't played this game, you need to try it. And if you're a game designer you need to study it, because it's incredible how much depth Schneider gets out of such a simple design.
Fantastic game, immense value for the price. I have replayed the game twice now and will be diving in once again. If you enjoy 80 days or the Sorcery games you should jump into this adventure. 10/10.

I wish some parts weren't solely text based. Though I love text based games, there are times when a picture is worth a thousand words. Having said that, the game is truly impressive.
An interesting take on medieval English folklore, combining semi-historical myths and proper legends into a near-seamless whole.
