Heavily inspired by the 90s graphic puzzle games, The Five Cores Remastered is a surreal and poetic adventure that you can explore in VR.

The game itself is good and I recommend supporting its development, but boy do the controls need work so I hope the developers plan on updating them. Here are the bullet points on what's wrong with the controls: .Turning and movement are both on the same hand. .When you hold down the grip to switch to free movement instead of teleport, it also changes the snap turning to smooth turning so you can't use free movement if you need snap turning. This should just be a menu option you can choose between and not change by holding down the grip. .If you decide to just use teleportation like I did, the snap turning is sensitive enough that it turns a bit on you as you're pushing the stick forward to teleport often. .You can't use your other hand at all other than to open the menu. I really hope these issues are ironed out, but I absolutely still recommend the game. It's a Myst clone as you'd expect.

I love this game! It is very 'Myst-like' but the puzzles make more sense and there is less running around between lands. It is a beautiful and lovingly crafted "empty landscape adventure with a minimal story told in letters and journals found along the way. The mechanics combine WASD 'walking/running' with point-and-click and were easy to manage. I struggled a little with the mouse movements required to 'grab' and pull/push/turn an object. Puzzles are mechanical and there is no inventory to find and use. With the exception of one puzzle, I was able to reason all out. The 'Spore Puzzle' seems to require a specific order of keystrokes which still do not not quite make sense to me. I had the solution but was unable to implement it. On this puzzle only, I ended up following the exact set of 5 or 6 clicks from a walkthrough to accomplish what was needed. Of course, this could be due to some clue that I missed... Solving puzzles and seeing the Steam accomplishments build was extremely gratifying. I'd highly recommend this to those who love to use their minds and patiently work through to solutions. I was reminded of Myha: Return to the Lost Island... another great puzzle/exploration game that I also recommend.
I found the story uninteresting enough to continue. The worlds seemed too dated graphically to me. I just didn't feel immersed. I played this in VR. The controls are pretty bad.
I think The Five Cores Remastered is one of the best MYST-inspired games ever made. Its not just the island setting with links to other islands/areas, but the environment and puzzle design that gives it this feeling. I loved the how puzzles are implemented and fit into the landscape really well. The modeling and graphics are superb and the music is great. There were some bugs in the initial release but the developer has fixed most of these. I had to restart the game because of one but I had no problems completing the game after the initial bugs were sorted. There is still an issue with some of the Steam Achievements triggering and he is working on a fix for this. I will happily replay it when those are fixed as it was lots of fun to play.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3 and PSVR 2
You can view my VR gameplay & impressions here: https://youtu.be/qIGlF-D5DeM Since this game is now free to play, I will go ahead and give it a neutral recommendation. However, I did pay $10 bucks for this and I don't think it is worth $10. While the game is a classic point & click puzzle adventure game from the 90s experience, it's also just as clunky as those games were back in the day. First of all, locomotion is terrible. Whether you use free locomotion or teleportation. They are both a frustrating experience in this game. You'll either have sudden stops to your motion or you'll have to take several attempts before you can teleport where you want to go (or not be able to go there at all). The interactions are also out-dated. Good ole point & click in VR just doesn't really feel good. After about an hour, I just wanted to quit playing the game out of frustration. On PSVR2, I could not get my motion controllers to work. On Quest 3, the game works using the VR option, but not the Steam VR option. I used link cable, virtual desktop may not work. You can play comfortably seated. Rate 5/10. I would have given a negative recommendation if it weren't free to play.
I bought this game! I really appreciate the remaster and it being brought to VR. But this is no Myst. Story is minimal and weak. Puzzles aren't very connected to the world and there's too little feedback. Most of the puzzles reminded me of the worst of the Myst/Riven puzzles that had you memorizing lengthy info from one place to match in another, through a layer of indirection. That's drastically harder in VR when you can't write something down (and there was no built in camera roll either). I admit my views of puzzle games has changed drastically since reading Don Norman's "The Design of Everyday Things" a few years ago. While the whole point is to "puzzle", there should ALWAYS be feedback/status/result when a action is performed. VR: Node movement with snap turn worked pretty well, it avoided clipping issues and was still fast as you could still just push the stick. There were a tiny handle of spots where the node was slightly between snap turn positions though. I personally can't handle yaw at all in VR, so lots of smooth turn is a hard no for me. But the "hand" interaction was super-weak and virtual/physical location didn't map well for me. It was very hard to reach the start of a lever and move it to the end. Given how few interactions the original source has anyway, a simple click would been move straight-forward.
B. in Myst. Talos. 👀Einsamkeit und mystisches auf meiner Kurator Seite. The Five Cores plays similarly to the classic Myst, but is nowhere near as complicated. The game also doesn't offer a great story, we got shipwrecked during a storm on one of the six islands. Now it's our task to find a way home again and decipher the mystery of the Five Cores to do so. Five Cores is only a port of a monitor game in VR and unfortunately the implementation is not really well done or rather not up to date. For example, the player only has one hand with which to interact in the world. The left hand must have somehow got lost during the stranding. With our remaining right hand we can use interactive things. By clicking on them, like with a laser pointer, or by touching them with the palm and pressing triggers. The hand then even closes, but does not form a physical connection with the object. That means, for example, a handle simply slides through the hand model. For walking, we can choose between free movement and teleportation, even during the game, but it is very difficult to walk straight with the Vive controllers. Index controllers are not supported at all and don't really work. The index is not mentioned in the game description either. The graphics are of course very old-fashioned, the game is from 2012, but it is solid enough. It's more about the puzzles than the beauty. Unfortunately, I can't say anything about them, because I found the controls and performance so bad that I didn't play far. But they are not supposed to be as difficult as in Myst, for example. For me, this is not a successful port of this genre classic. Puzzle fans may have fun, the game is always on sale. An alternative would be Talos, for example. 👀Loneliness and mystical on my curator page.
