If you enjoy Match 3 games then this game should be in your list. The Far Kingdoms: Elements is a mixture of hidden objects, puzzles and Match 3 all together. The story about Princess Arianna who wants to save her kingdom from Morgana, the evil enchantress. You'll travel from a place to another, viewing the beautiful sceneries and find items to help people and break the curse. The artwork of this game is outstanding. I enjoyed the graphics more than the story itself. The gameplay is straight forward, find items, using them, and move to the next area. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1620372725 The music wasn't bad, but because I enjoy hidden objects scenes more than Match 3, I found the game a little bit tedious. You can switch a hidden object scene to a match 3 game, but you can't do it the other way around. However, if you get stuck in the Match 3 segments, you can shuffle it three times before you are allowed to skip it, each game has a different objective though. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1621175785 The hidden objects scenes are well drawn and blended, you won't see the needed item out of the place or different color. I enjoyed those scenes a lot. The hinting system is really helpful in case you got stuck in any of the scenes or gameplay itself. Sadly there is no map to teleport you from a place to another, but each section has 5 or 6 areas to visit, the backtracking is minimal. The journal wasn't bad but it wasn't too detailed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1622299376 Pros: +Beautiful graphics and artwork. +Avarage story. +Good music. +Multiple hidden objects scenes. +Variety of puzzles. +Match 3 games. Cons: -No steam achievements. -No Map. -No voice-overs. I recommend this game to people who want to enjoy the puzzles, match 3 or hidden objects scenes and not in for the story because there is nothing much about it. I enjoyed the game to a degree if it was a full HOG I'd have loved it so much. A mix of match-3, hidden object, and puzzles. And if you don't like hidden object scenes, you can replace them with more match-3. I think. I love HOs so I never glossed over them. The music is nice and some of the backgrounds are quite lovely. However, the game is very short so I don't believe it's worth the asking price. On sale though, I think it'd be a nice addition to your library if you're a fan of match-3, hidden object, or puzzles. Or all three. :)
Pros + Amazing and evocative art. + Alternative solutions and skippable puzzles. + A large variety of settings to explore. + Overall a large number of different minigames. Cons - Badly balanced puzzle kinds, some appearing just once and others being too repetitive. - Very basic and limited storytelling. - Only up to 90 minutes of gameplay with no replayability. The Far Kingdoms: Elements is an indie puzzle game by Lazy Turtle Games. It features Match3, hidden objects, pattern recognition and point and click elements combined altogether by a very basic fantasy plot. The Match3 puzzles style feels similar to Jewel Quest – classic, there are some modifications to the game grid, but no power-ups or bonuses to the matching items themselves. The point and click parts of the game could be compared to Deponia, where the items need a longer preparation and interaction with the enviroment before they are ready.
Story, Dialogue and Characters
The story in this game is very plain and is just used as a thread between the puzzles. There are very few dialogues and all of them are simple, explaining vaguely what happened, how to fix it and how to approach each guardian of the object of desire. This gives little if not no room at all for character development, but there are still some details provided by the enviroment surrounding them. They do not have much of a personality and are easily forgettable – apart from the mascot frog and white crow that will merge into the lower bar and will not be heard from before the game is completed. The player is introduced in medias res. The kingdom has been cursed by an evil sorceress named Morgana and the player, as the Princess Arianna, has to venture on a journey to break the spell. There are three different elemental seals to retrieve in order to succeed and it is required to visit three separate locations, each for every jewel. The player will travel through portals that will appear with not much explanation after the completion of each zone. The game gives suggestions on what to do proceed holding their hand at every step. How to do it however is not explained, often resulting in confusion. Many point and click elements have solutions so simple, they feel an unnecessary hindrance and are not very coherent with any logics. For example in a scene there is a boat full of water on the land, but to take the item from the boat the player needs to take the bucket that is beside the boat and empty it. There are four separate locations, including the introduction zone. The remaining three are related to the elemental powers needed to save the unnamed kingdom. The player will explore the ocean that represents the water element, a land of fire and finally some islands engulfed by clouds. Each zone offers a series of puzzles and a final boss one that will recompensate the player with what they seek.
Gameplay
The main feature to the game are the puzzles and point and click elements merged with the story part of the game. Most of the puzzles are based on the classic Match3 mechanic. No power ups, no combos, just combining three or more elements that look the same together. Every single time the player is required to gather some items for the story that won't be picked up, there is another variant of this puzzle, where the objects have to be dropped at the bottom of the grid. Once per zone there also is a more unusual kind of Match3. It features a huge grid and two object, first is the starting point, the second one is the arrival. The squares in which items were matched togethere become part of the path for the object. This grid is much bigger than the field of view, to move through it, it's neccessary to interact with items in the squares. The player is often required to look for an item, starting a hidden objects minigame. It is possible to choose to use the Match3 system instead, for just one or even all the items from the checklist, which is a great solution if the hidden objects result too tedious and permits a different solution. The third kind of puzzle is the find the patter recognition Those minigames feature full animations or are excessively long, resulting a loss of time and straightly irritating. All of the point and click puzzles are hinted by dialogue windows. The solutions can be immediate or can require some more steps. They are not difficult and sometimes feel like they are there just to add some content. There are some parts of the playthrough that can only be cleared by using a magical pendant located on the lower bar, imbued with the power to cast a firebeam. This mechanincs is never explained and it can only be understood through trial and error. Occasionally there are a few puzzles that can't be classified as they are all different. Those provide a nice breath of fresh air to the player and enrich the game. The difficulty overall is medium and there is the possibility to use hints or skip entirely the puzzles if they're too complex to complete. This game needs around 90 minutes to be fully completed, making it more of a one-sitting experience. This could be a problem, because of the repetitivity of the same kind of minigames, so it should be approached by those who fully enjoy the genre.
Graphics
There is a lot of effort put into the static part of the graphics. The illustrations are digitally painted, really detailed and pleasant to the eyes, conveying well the fairy tale and fantasy backgrounds. The style is coherent to the one that established itself in this gaming genre. The animations are all made in Adobe After Effects. This could've been avoided and replaced with simple image sequences, which would've been less distracting and more balanced. The single object images have sometimes badly refined and cropped borders. The seals when picked up can be seen enlarged – it displays and transforms the same quality image that will be used in the inventory bar – resulting in a blurring picture. Those are not big issues, because this can only be seen for a short period. All the Match3 elements are themed and are extremely detailed and appealing. They are all provided with either a complete animation or a shine throughout the object. While it makes for a very polished look, it is distracting, as the shine is ofter used in Match3 games as a hint sign and here it appears randomly. Game interface is standard and all the required settings are there. There is also the possibility to have multiple game profiles.
Sound
The soundtrack of this game is pretty basic, it's mostly silent if not for the initial cinematic and minigames' sound effects.
Performance
The game performs well on my computer, but considering how basing its graphic and mechanics are it should easily run on any machine modern computer. Specs of the computer used: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU 2.70GHz 2.90 Ghz 8 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce 950M
Bugs / Issues
Nothing major to report.
Content to Price Ratio
This game lasts up to 90 minutes and contains a high amount of puzzles. They are however ripetitive and after completing several times the same kind of minigame can get annoying. There is no ambient music, but the graphics are beautifully drawn. The price may seem a little too high, but it should not be surprising, it's an indie game, from a small Developer. If you wish to support them, the price of 5.69€ is just right for what you will get. The Far Kingdoms: Elements: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The witch Morgana cast a spell on your kingdom. Every living form has been turned into statues and you, Arianna, must find the three elements of air, water and fire to reverse that curse. There is no time to waste if you want to save your kingdom! The Far Kingdoms: Elements is a mix of hidden objects and match 3 games developed by Lazy Turtle Games and published by HH games. You ‘ll take on Arianna’s role and save your kingdom from Morgana’s curse. The game as three levels of difficulty: casual, expert and hardcore. Essentially, you can access more hints in the causal difficulty than from the hardcore. The game begins with a short introduction to how the story begins. Then, you’ll be stuck in a room and need to find the key to unlock the door. As with any game of this genre, you’ll be using your mouse to hover over the image until you reach an object that sparkles, and by clicking on it, you’ll start either a hidden object segment or a match 3 game. The hidden objects scenes are well done, and most of the objects are challenging to find within the image. The match 3 are setup in a few different ways: the first one is when you have an object in a tile positioned at the top of the grid with the goal being to get this object on the bottom row of the grid to acquire it; the second is pretty much the same but you have to acquire between 3 to 8 of the same objects to win the match; the third one is when you have to move an object from the left side of the grid to another one which is on the opposite side of the grid. This version can scroll between to 2 to 3 screens of length, and you create the path by matching 3 objects, which in turn will fill up three tiles at a time. The all bosses fight is a match 3 affair, and in these you have to collect 10 rubies to defeat each of the bosses. I enjoyed the layout of the grids that changed frequently, which is a great in my opinion! You might get stuck in a match 3 game but don’t worry, you can swap the grid around by clicking on the swap button underneath frog image - you won’t miss it! Early in the game, you’ll find a red amulet and every now and then you might struggle how to get to the next hidden and objects due to the simple fact that you don’t have any items in your library to access a specific area within the image. The Amulet has power and can clear some obstacles, but not all. The game takes around 3 and a half hours to complete, which is pretty good for the genre. The graphics are good, and the soundtrack suits the game nicely. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics + Nice soundtrack + Mixed of Match 3 games + Nice Hidden and objects scenes Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No trading cards as yet - No achievements The Far Kingdoms: Elements is an enjoyable casual game that featured a mix of hidden objects and Match 3 game and attendant for all ages. 6/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes.
This is a really interesting game, in that it combines elements of Match-3, Hidden Object and Puzzle gameplay. There seems to be a nice balance between the Match-3 scenes and the HOS, so you don't tend to feel overwhelmed by one or the other. If HOS really aren't something you enjoy, you can also switch to a Match-3 type of game to finish finding the items on the list. The graphics are very well done and the music is very pleasant, almost soothing to listen to as you play. To be honest, I'm finding the story just so-so...as a result, I'm not paying too much attention to it. I just want to get back to the gorgeous scenery and the fun gameplay! I'm finding it a nice game to play in-between some of my other games. It's a nice game to relax with and to give your brain a break from more intense games you might be playing. If you enjoy playing Match-3 games, then you will definitely enjoy this game!
Netter Zeitvertreib!
Enjoyable little match 3 game. A stretch at $5US but on sale it is a definite buy. 5/10 at full price; in a bundle or on sale over 50% 8/10
