About
The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike combines manga, tactical puzzles, and roguelike gameplay into one thrilling experience. Enjoy stylish pixel-art action while testing your flexible thinking and precise strategy!

Collect manga “panels” and arrange them on a page to fight!
Each turn, you receive new panels. Placing them on the page creates your action sequence. Place panels according to the situation, build the ultimate page, and defeat your enemies!

Experience three unique characters, each with their own style:
Akira – A genius hitman who masters gunfire and melee.
Yoko – Akira’s partner who uses mobile attacks to outsmart enemies.
Suzuki – A cold-blooded assassin who uses traps and bullets to defeat enemies.

Damage during battles is represented as holes in the page.
You cannot place panels in areas where there are holes.
Carefully evaluate each situation and defeat all enemies within the turn limit!

Between tense battles, relax with surreal little mini-game events.
Score high, and you’ll have a chance to earn powerful new panels!

For players who want to push their wit to the limit, there’s Puzzle Mode.
Use the given panels to defeat all enemies within a single page.
(Even the developers don’t know how much thought and time the hardest puzzles will take to solve. But don’t give up—there’s always a solution!)

And of course, it wouldn’t be The Fable without him—Yuki, the playboy. At the bar, he challenges the beautiful Yoko to a drinking match. Can this reckless, foolish man impress the Drunk Queen Yoko, or will he just crash and burn?

Overpriced for the amount of content even though I bought it on sale, gameplay has no depth as in you've seen it all after 2-3 runs on each character. Pick it up once its less than 5 bucks if you wanna kill some time or you like the manga/anime. Most frustrating part is the minigame selection. I like the minigames but for whatever reason minigame #1 will never show up for me even though I've done runs and runs over and over with each character on both difficulties it still never shows. I kept track of how many times I tried getting it and its well over 80 if you include the runs before I started grinding for it. So out of all achievements thats the only one I'm missing and now I have to drop it until some miracle patch. So much for RNG in this roguelike.

The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike is one of the more inventive strategy roguelikes to emerge from a manga adaptation because it transforms the identity of its source material directly into gameplay mechanics instead of simply borrowing characters and story elements. Developed by MONO ENTERTAINMENT and published by Kodansha, the game reimagines the world of The Fable as a tactical roguelike built entirely around arranging comic panels to create combat sequences. Rather than using traditional turn-based combat or standard deckbuilding systems, the game asks players to think like both a strategist and a manga editor, carefully constructing pages that determine movement, attacks, defense, and special actions. The result is a surprisingly clever blend of puzzle solving, tactical planning, and roguelike progression that feels genuinely different from most games in the genre. The core gameplay revolves around collecting and placing action panels onto comic-book pages during combat encounters. Each panel represents a specific action such as attacking, dodging, moving, blocking, or using special abilities. Once placed, the sequence executes automatically according to the layout players have created. This system immediately changes the flow of strategy because success depends not only on choosing the right actions but also on arranging them efficiently across limited page space. Every battle feels like building a carefully choreographed action scene where timing and placement matter just as much as raw power. One of the most impressive mechanics is how damage affects the comic pages themselves. When the player takes heavy hits, sections of the manga page become permanently destroyed for the duration of the encounter, reducing the available space where future panels can be placed. This mechanic constantly increases pressure during combat because mistakes physically limit strategic options over time. Players must adapt their plans around damaged pages while still finding ways to survive difficult encounters. It is an incredibly smart design decision because it ties the comic-book presentation directly into gameplay rather than treating the manga aesthetic as simple visual decoration. The tactical depth becomes much stronger as additional panels, upgrades, and characters are introduced throughout repeated runs. Different characters bring completely different combat styles and abilities into battle, encouraging experimentation with new page layouts and action sequences. Some characters excel at aggressive offensive chains, while others reward stealth, positioning, defensive planning, or mobility-focused strategies. Since every run introduces randomized upgrades and encounters, players are constantly adapting their approach based on available resources and panel combinations. The roguelike structure fits the game surprisingly well. Each run gradually expands the player’s tactical options through new panels, modifiers, and upgrades, creating a satisfying sense of progression without overwhelming players too quickly. Strong combinations can create devastating attack sequences capable of clearing enemies efficiently, while weaker or poorly planned layouts leave characters vulnerable. The game constantly rewards experimentation because discovering effective panel synergies is one of the most satisfying aspects of the experience. One of the game’s greatest strengths is how faithfully it captures the personality of The Fable manga itself. Fans of the original series will immediately recognize the awkward humor, bizarre character interactions, and sudden bursts of violence that defined the source material. The balance between absurd comedy and tense combat is handled surprisingly well. Quiet moments between missions often feature strange conversations and comedic side activities that contrast sharply with the intensity of combat encounters. This tonal balance prevents the game from becoming too mechanically repetitive while also helping it feel like a genuine extension of the manga rather than a generic licensed product. Visually, the game successfully combines manga-inspired layouts with retro pixel art and comic-book presentation. Character animations are expressive despite the pixel-based style, and the constantly changing comic page layouts give battles a unique visual identity. Watching action panels unfold across the page creates the feeling of controlling an interactive manga rather than a standard strategy game. The interface also remains relatively readable despite the complexity of later encounters, which is important because players often need to process large amounts of tactical information quickly. The soundtrack complements the experience nicely with energetic combat themes and more atmospheric tracks during quieter moments. Audio cues help reinforce successful attack chains and movement sequences, making carefully planned combos feel satisfying when executed correctly. While the soundtrack may not become especially memorable outside the game itself, it supports the pacing and overall atmosphere effectively. Another standout feature is the dedicated puzzle mode, which isolates the game’s strongest mechanics into focused combat scenarios. Instead of relying on randomized progression, these challenges ask players to solve carefully designed encounters using limited panels and strict tactical restrictions. Some of these puzzles become genuinely difficult and require extremely precise planning, making them a great addition for players who enjoy strategy games built around optimization and problem solving. However, the game is not without weaknesses. The learning curve can occasionally feel punishing, especially once page destruction mechanics and enemy complexity begin stacking together during later runs. Some encounters demand extremely careful planning and repeated experimentation, which may frustrate players looking for a more casual roguelike experience. Because every turn matters so heavily, longer sessions can also become mentally exhausting. Randomized progression sometimes creates uneven runs as well. Certain panel combinations are dramatically stronger than others, and unlucky upgrades or poor early offerings can leave players struggling to build effective strategies. While skill still plays a major role in survival, some runs feel noticeably harder simply because of weaker panel options. Balance issues occasionally make experimentation feel less rewarding once dominant strategies become obvious. The game’s unusual concept may also divide players. Strategy fans expecting traditional deckbuilding or tactical combat systems may initially struggle to adapt to the comic-page structure. In addition, players unfamiliar with The Fable manga may not fully appreciate some of the humor, references, or character dynamics that longtime fans will recognize immediately. Fortunately, the gameplay itself remains strong enough to stand on its own even without deep knowledge of the source material. Despite these flaws, The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike succeeds because it fully commits to its creative vision. The comic panel system fundamentally changes how players think about combat, and the integration between presentation and mechanics is genuinely impressive. Combined with strong tactical depth, replayable roguelike progression, and faithful adaptation of the manga’s atmosphere, the game delivers one of the more original strategy experiences released in recent years. For players who enjoy tactical puzzle games, roguelike progression systems, and unusual strategy mechanics, The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike offers a fresh and highly memorable experience. It may require patience to fully understand its systems, but once the mechanics click together, the game becomes an addictive mix of strategy, experimentation, and comic-book action that feels unlike almost anything else in the genre. Rating: 8/10
This was my vote for the "Most innovative game of the year" this year.
