The idea of the Russian Imperial setting is original and yet untapped in RPG game market. With proper delivery, this could become the new Witcher in terms of exploring Slavic themes. I am really happy that the Devs found a financing source, and looking forward to what they can turn this into. What I liked: 1) Location design. It really feels like Eastern Europe and the textures were very pleasant to look at. 2) Character interactions. The dialogues felt natural and funny, and they allowed the player to quickly understand who is who in the Squad. Russian voice acting was also very professional and authentic, especially in the case of the villagers. 3) Story driven game design. The pacing of the quest felt slow but steady. Overall it felt like a proper detective story, while still providing action as befits a man representing Imperial Government in these places. 4) Freedom and Quantity of choices. I felt like I can really develop Alexander in different ways through his choices of action and dialogues I hope this system gets developed thoroughly so my choices actually matter for the big story. What needs drastic improvement: 1) Too much monotonous walking. Needs more engaging ways to proceed from A to B. 2) Combat system. It felt frustrating even for a placeholder. Needs complete redesign. 3) Nighttime. Even with a torch in your hand, it really boiled down to looking at the minimap more than at the screen. Will need improvement especially if stealth system is planned. Overall, the setting alone makes me very excited about the coming full game, and I think Emperor's Own will become one of the best RPGs to come out of Russia.

This game, with it's emphasis on having a good plot, lively characters, and an authentic atmosphere has some awesome potential. I actually really enjoyed this and it left me anticipating a greater role-playing experience than any in years. The game's setting really feels like early 19th century, Southern Russia. There seems to be an Ottoman Empire spin-off in here as well. You play as some of the Tsar's finely-dressed subordinates who seek to preserve and reinforce the Empire's authority over the land. This is naturally done at the expense of humble peasants finding themselves subjects of a brutal power struggle between competing forces. As the game's setting explores such sensitive topics(war, murder, taxes, punishment, all the other good deeds our wonderful governments of the world are so revered for), and tries to at least in part, represent real-world history, I personally feel as if the value of this game will be determined by how well it does this.
Full game abandoned!!!
