Well, let's go over that, shall we....... First of all- the current product is in Alpha stage, which means it's a Long way from being complete at that point. The Emperor's Own: Alpha Teaser is telling the story of an alternate Russian Empire, where you take upon a role of the Imperial officer, who works for the "secret services" of 19th century. GRAPHICS: Despite the warnings, I actually liked the graphics and texture quality quite a lot- sure, some of the facial animations look a tiny bit off, during the dialogues, but for Alpha-stage product, this is more than acceptable. The landscapes you see ingame Actually brought some nostalgic feelings of Russian nature I used to enjoy before, and the character models are well- made, including clothing you'd expect from 19th century period. The main point of focus for the devs would probably to go for improving Movement and fighting animations- which brings me to the next point. COMBAT AND GAMEPLAY: Despite being similar terms in most games- the current product has roughly 50-50 split between story-progression via dialogues and Combat encounters (when you're not running from one story target to another); therefore, it's important to follow the dialogues carefully, rather than skip through them (like in Most story-based RPGs, of course), but there is a good chance you won't get to pick the same options after going through the same dialogue branches- be mindful of your choices. As for combat part- there's surprisingly not much of it, and it is quite non-intuitive even for an RPG game- the closest game to compare it with would probably be Sea Dogs (Corsairs , aka Pirates of the Carribean) - which consists of blocking, atacking (with Light and heavy variations) dodging and Kicking. All of physical moves seem to drain your energy bar, which regenerates slowly over time. The much better alternative would (in my opinion) be free-flow Combat, as seen in WB Games (Arkham, or for sword variations- Middle-Earth series). Phew, onwards to the sweet core of the game- the story. STORY: You have a great setting of Russian 19th century (beginning of), which has common folk- Russian peasants- at its centre. Although you are a secret agent- like officer, people still recognise you as a Representative of Power in Russian villages, and treat you accordingly- while your friends on a mission would add humorous remarks about whatever it is that comes up on your path. The plot itself involves detective- like mysteries for you to solve, funny and spooky encounters- I'll let you explore the game in that respect for yourself, to avoid spoilers- but remember, you are NOT In a strictly- accurate Historical timeline, but rather in a What- if scenario of Russian history. CONCLUSION: While the game is in a raw state, it has more promissing potential than a lot of Early Access games nowadays- and if the devs continue in the same passionate way they started this project - there's a high chance we'll finally get a solid Story-based RPG about Russian Empire (even if it does not strictly follow the real- life chronicle) with a great atmosphere. So far (Considering Alpha-state of Game): GRAPHICS AND VISUALS: 9/10 DIALOGUES SYSTEM: 9/10 COMBAT SYSTEM: 6/10 STORY: 8/10 GAMEPLAY OVERALL: 8/10

Now I am going to be completely honest here, as opposed to sugarcoating things. The game has a long way to go, though that isn't saying much with the state it is in. I found the game to be relatively stable so that wasn't an issue for me. What was however, was kind of important. The story was interesting at first but incredibly shallow, it failed to capture any original sense of wonder. The time period while not covered often in RPGs if at all, is not used to its full potential, the game seems to be satisfied with just being a very bad, third person, Kingdom Come Deliverance rip off. There was too much going from point A to point B without anything happening, an honest to god walking simulator. They could have easily shaved off some of the blatant padding in the game but it's not that big of a deal compared to every other glaring issue so far. That is not to say I do not see any good things about the game, I think it could definitely go to become the next Greedfall. Some of the voice acting was done well but not with good direction, it has no actual emotion or passion to it. The main character is for all intents and purposes just a watered down Henry from KCD, which takes away even more from the game as its own original title. The main three musketeers were forgettable at best, and boring at their worst. You had the Leader(You), the grizzled Veteran and the green faced Brat. I've forgotten their names, and I really don't care to bother learning them. Combat is placeholder, and that is fine, but everything else might as well be placeholder too with how bad they are. The only finished things I have seen so far is the Main characters' models. Another diamond in the rough for this "game" is the old man who you converse with at the homesteads. If the aim of the developers of this game was to get some hype going for this game, then they've somehow managed it, though I doubt it's from any actual skill on their part but rather just how easy and untapped this niche market is to corner.

To start out, this game has a lot of potential. However, I really don't think it's going to ever go much further, if at all, from what we have now. The game has been in limbo for almost 2 years. Not an update since then. The devs linked social media outlets to follow along with development, and minus youtube, there is no real update on either of them. There isn't even an update here on steam. The devs are sticking around, though, and saying that they haven't abandoned the project. So we will see. With the demo, I personally believe the small amount I played hasn't left an impression on me to leave a positive review. It's a free demo, so everyone should at least try it if you are interested. It is full with bugs and from the start, it is atrociously slow. I can't even load a save file because the game crashes (which I will add that the devs say they know about. That has been over a year ago and no updates or improvements to the demo from which I have seen). But with all the negativity out of the way, I will say that there is an ambitious project here and an interesting one at that. And the devs have stuck around on the forum, even though there isn't many threads or people on the forums. I hope this project will come to fruition.
I'll start of by saying I don't usually write reviews but from what I've seen so far this is pretty much everything I've wanted in a Action RPG in terms of setting and aesthetics. Being a very early Alpha teaser I didn't expect much and was sort of blown away by the quality of the voice acting, animations and general design even keeping in mind that much of what we see is placeholder or early versions apparently. Combat was awkward and messy but we're told ingame that it's something mocked up just for the demo and they'll work on something properly for the actual game. With that in mind I like the direction it's going in with a 19th Century Fencing vibe. The dialogue was really well written in my opinion, serious when it had to be and absolutely hilarious in a few cases where the writers seemed to be having some fun (The Merchant and the Chest with a rusty old sword come to mind). All in all I'll definitely be supporting the Kickstarter when it goes up again and I'm not usually the sort to do so. P.S. You may get a "Fatal Error" message when saving or loading from time to time. For me just restarting the game and loading until I didn't get that message usually did away with it. Remember to save often!
