This game has trouble making up its mind what it is. A platformer or a story driven walking sim. Cuz it doesn't do either well. The platforming mechanics do not fit and are horribly annoying. And the story delivery is not great -- a genius doctor who talks like a psychotic clown? No.
Neutral review: I'm thrilled to see a designer who doesn't think finding batteries or matches is the height of gameplay. The game is decent, but for some reason one of the main characters decided to do a super over the top joker impersonation that was annoying and did not at all fit the tone of the game. I was having a decent time, then got to an annoying block puzzle, tried a few times and kinda gave up on the game. As someone who enjoys horror that isn't just refilling batteries and hiding from monsters, I would love to see more atmospheric games like this, and I'll for sure check out their next game. 6/10
The Crow's Eye
I just finished The Crow’s Eye today. I streamed the whole thing to my buddy, M, and we were both completely hooked on the story. It’s intriguing as hell; there’s something about the mystery and the way the narrative unfolds that is eerie but weirdly yummy. That said… it’s pretty slow-paced. Like, really slow. Like, test my patience-slow. Now, full disclosure: I do not like horror or jump scares. So when the game decided to randomly shove a worm (or whatever the F that thing was) on my face… let’s just say... I did not appreciate it! Also, if you have in mind that this game is actually from 2017, I think it holds up way better than expected. I enjoyed playing it - but wont revisit the worm-thingies.
UI scaling is rubbish in higher resolution but game is alright
The Crow’s Eye by 3D2 Entertainment, published by Akupara Games, is a first-person psychological horror adventure that invites players into a haunting and unsettling narrative set within the abandoned halls of Crowswood University. From the moment you awaken in this desolate institution, the game plunges you into a world thick with mystery and tension, slowly peeling back layers of a dark past marked by unethical experiments and vanished students. The story is immersive and atmospheric, relying heavily on environmental storytelling, scattered documents, and audio logs that piece together a chilling 20-year-old mystery. The presence of the protagonist’s father, a troubled private detective, adds an intriguing personal dimension to the unfolding narrative, blending family drama with the overarching horrors lurking within the university. Gameplay centers on exploration and puzzle-solving, encouraging players to carefully examine their surroundings and interact with a variety of objects to progress. The level design is carefully crafted to evoke a constant sense of unease: dimly lit corridors, decaying classrooms, and eerie laboratories create an oppressive atmosphere that keeps players on edge. The puzzles themselves range from straightforward object manipulations to more complex sequences that demand observation and critical thinking. While the majority of these challenges feel thoughtfully integrated into the environment, some moments can become repetitive or frustrating, especially when certain puzzles disrupt the pacing or require trial and error. Nevertheless, these moments are balanced by a steady drip of narrative and atmospheric rewards, ensuring the player remains engaged throughout the experience. Sound design plays a crucial role in amplifying the game’s psychological horror elements. The ambient audio—from distant footsteps echoing through empty hallways to unsettling creaks and whispers—builds a persistent sense of isolation and dread. The voice acting, particularly that of the antagonist, delivers a compelling and sometimes unnerving performance, effectively conveying a sense of menace and instability that permeates the story. However, the dialogue occasionally veers into melodrama, with lines that some may find cheesy or overdone, which can slightly detract from the immersion. Despite these minor flaws, the audio work overall succeeds in reinforcing the haunting mood that defines The Crow’s Eye. Visually, the game opts for a realistic art style that complements its psychological horror themes. The architecture and textures of Crowswood University are detailed and atmospheric, with lighting playing a key role in creating tension. Flickering lights and deep shadows are used effectively to generate moments of suspense and surprise, drawing players deeper into the oppressive environment. While the graphics might not compete with the most cutting-edge titles, they are more than sufficient to build a believable and eerie world that feels both lived-in and forsaken. The balance between visual detail and minimalist design helps keep the player focused on exploration and atmosphere rather than flashy effects. From an accessibility standpoint, The Crow’s Eye features intuitive controls and a guided progression that helps players navigate the sometimes labyrinthine setting without becoming lost. However, the game is not without its challenges—some jumping puzzles can feel awkward or imprecise, potentially causing frustration. This minor clunkiness stands out in an otherwise polished experience, as it briefly interrupts the flow and tension the game works hard to build. Despite this, most players will find the mechanics straightforward and conducive to immersion, particularly those who appreciate slower-paced, cerebral horror experiences. The game’s mature themes are integral to its tone and story, earning it a recommended age rating of 16 and up. It explores disturbing concepts such as psychological manipulation, unethical scientific experimentation, and human suffering. While explicit violence is limited, the psychological weight of these themes, combined with the tense atmosphere, creates a mature and haunting experience that isn’t for the faint of heart. This mature content is handled with care, serving the narrative rather than relying on shock value, which deepens the emotional impact for players willing to engage with the story’s darker elements. In summary, The Crow’s Eye is a distinctive psychological horror adventure that emphasizes atmosphere, narrative, and exploration over jump scares or high-octane action. Its carefully constructed environment, coupled with a layered and mysterious storyline, creates a compelling experience for players who enjoy slow-burn horror with an intellectual edge. Though it has some minor pacing and mechanical issues, the game’s strong sense of place and psychological depth make it a memorable journey into fear and mystery. For those drawn to atmospheric horror with a focus on story and puzzles, The Crow’s Eye stands out as a thoughtful and immersive entry in the genre. Rating: 7/10
8,5/10 puan.
