The Adventures of Fei Duanmu 端木斐异闻录 is a mystery-driven visual novel that blends crime investigation with supernatural undertones, creating an experience that sits somewhere between detective drama and modern urban folklore. You play as Fei Duanmu, a college student studying criminal investigation, whose talent and curiosity pull him into a series of unusual cases. The world around him is not limited to ordinary crimes or straightforward logic; instead, each incident carries a strange atmosphere, as if everyday life is constantly brushing against something uncanny. This mix of realism and the inexplicable becomes one of the game’s central appeals, drawing the player into a setting where the familiar and the mysterious coexist uneasily. From a presentation standpoint, the game makes a strong first impression. The background art frequently incorporates photo-based or realistic imagery, giving the locations a grounded, almost documentary feel, while the character sprites are expressive and fluidly animated. These choices give the story a sense of immediacy, as though you’re peering into a living world rather than reading a static novel. Voice acting enhances this effect further, adding personality and emotional shading to the cast. Even small interactions feel richer when supported by believable expressions and natural delivery, and these production values help lift the narrative’s tension and emotional stakes. Structurally, the story unfolds across several self-contained cases, each building on the previous one while maintaining its own central mystery. The first case works as an extended introduction: it eases the player into the investigative mechanics, the core cast, and the tone of the narrative. Later cases expand significantly, revealing deeper psychological layers and leaning more heavily into puzzle-solving and deduction. The pacing is deliberate, allowing suspense to build gradually as clues accumulate and conversations shift tone. The blend of realistic criminal puzzles with eerie coincidences or unexplained events keeps the experience unpredictable, with each chapter feeling like a new puzzle box waiting to be pried open. Where the game distinguishes itself from many visual novels is in its incorporation of active gameplay. Instead of simply selecting dialogue options, you’re asked to analyze evidence, break passwords, assemble logical sequences, and confront suspects through timed or structured interrogation scenes. These mechanics give you a tangible role in unraveling each case, reinforcing the feeling of being an investigator rather than a passive observer. At their best, these sequences heighten the immersion by forcing you to think critically and follow the investigation’s threads. However, they can also become stumbling blocks: some puzzles are surprisingly demanding for a visual novel, and the timed segments in particular can feel stressful or awkward for players who prefer careful reading over quick reactions. The game’s largest flaw lies in its localization. While the original Chinese script is well-paced and atmospheric, the English translation has noticeable inconsistencies in grammar, phrasing, and clarity. For a narrative that relies heavily on subtle wording and logical deduction, even small translation slip-ups can create confusion or weaken emotional impact. Although many players manage to follow the story without too much trouble, others find certain scenes harder to interpret than they should be. This issue doesn’t undermine the entire experience, but it does remind you frequently that the game was designed primarily for a Chinese-speaking audience, with the translation struggling at points to match the original tone. Despite these imperfections, The Adventures of Fei Duanmu succeeds in creating a vivid and engaging mystery experience. Its mix of grounded crime scenes and faint supernatural hints keeps the atmosphere tense and intriguing. The high-quality character art, expressive acting, and carefully built cases give the game a personality all its own, distinct from both traditional “case-of-the-week” detective stories and purely supernatural dramas. Its episodic structure leaves room for future expansions and follow-up chapters, and it rewards replaying to uncover different endings or explore alternate choices. For players who enjoy detective narratives that involve both logic and intuition, who appreciate visual novels with more interactive depth than simple text progression, or who like mysteries that flirt with the uncanny without abandoning realism, this game provides a captivating experience. It may feel rough around the edges and occasionally demanding, but its strengths lie in its atmosphere, ambition, and ability to immerse you in a world where every detail might be a clue — or a warning. Rating: 8/10
