An intriguing indie curio. At its core, it's a clunky-but-serviceable platforming collect-a-thon. A handcrafted game for sure, and extremely rough around the edges, but if you can look past its production value weaknesses, there's something enrapturing about the sheer vibe of The Abnormal Place. Most of this is down to the game's world, which has both a distinctive atmosphere and solid level design that seemed to me to be inspired by the intertwining verticality of the original Dark Souls (and I don't make that comparison lightly). The original score is exceptional as well, and does some serious heavy lifting for the overall tone. There's a charm to the writing and some heavy themes buried in the narrative, though I would have enjoyed seeing them forefronted and structured more elegantly within the playtime. There's also some serious jank to the gameplay, though the autosave system ensured I never really lost any progress due to the handful of bugs I experienced. Character interaction largely boils down to fetch quests, which can wear a bit, especially towards the endgame. Despite these shortcomings, I found myself too charmed to stop playing. Overall, The Abnormal Place won't be for everyone, but if you enjoy digging up micro-indie curiosities, give this game a try. I'm looking forward to seeing what Berserker Interactive gets up to next.
Far from a perfect game, the jump animation doesnt play with the jump, but after, and platforming is somewhat clunky. The overall Tim Burton aesthetic and attention to detail in this crafted world is great though. Exploring and conversing with Abnormal Places strange inhabitants is very enjoyable. The autosave is frustrating. Collecting all of an item and then falling off a cliff only to be left with 2/4 of the item suuuuucks
The Abnormal Place is a surreal adventure-platformer developed and published by Berserker Interactive that combines exploration, environmental puzzles, platforming challenges, and unusual storytelling into a distinctive indie experience. Set within a mysterious resort populated by strange creatures and hidden dangers, the game follows a young woman named Abigail as she struggles to recover her lost voice and uncover the secrets of a world that feels detached from reality. Through its blend of whimsical imagery, dark undertones, and interconnected exploration, the game creates a memorable journey that stands apart from more conventional platforming adventures. The story begins with Abigail finding herself trapped in a bizarre location without any clear understanding of how she arrived there. Unable to speak and surrounded by unfamiliar creatures, she must explore the resort and surrounding areas in search of answers. The loss of her voice serves as both a narrative hook and a gameplay motivation, driving players to investigate every corner of the world in hopes of restoring what has been taken from her. This unusual premise immediately creates intrigue and encourages curiosity from the opening moments. One of the game's strongest qualities is its atmosphere. The Abnormal Place constantly balances charm and discomfort, creating an environment that feels both inviting and unsettling. Bright colors and imaginative character designs are contrasted by an underlying sense of mystery and danger. Every new location feels slightly strange, as if it exists somewhere between a dream and a nightmare. This unique tone helps maintain interest throughout the adventure and gives the game a personality that is difficult to forget. Exploration serves as the heart of the experience. Rather than pushing players through a strictly linear sequence of stages, the game encourages investigation and discovery. The resort gradually opens up as new abilities, items, and objectives are acquired, allowing access to previously unreachable areas. This interconnected structure rewards careful observation and makes progress feel earned. Hidden pathways, collectibles, and optional discoveries are scattered throughout the environment, giving players plenty of reasons to look beyond the most obvious routes. Platforming challenges are integrated naturally into the world. Abigail must navigate hazardous environments filled with traps, dangerous obstacles, and environmental threats that stand between her and her goals. Precision and timing are often required, particularly when crossing difficult sections or accessing hidden areas. While the platforming mechanics are relatively straightforward, they complement the exploration-focused design and provide a satisfying sense of progression as players learn how to navigate increasingly complex environments. The puzzle elements are equally important to the overall experience. Rather than relying on highly complicated brainteasers, the game emphasizes environmental interaction and problem-solving. Players frequently collect items, fulfill requests, and use information gathered from exploration to unlock new opportunities. These mechanics fit naturally within the adventure and help maintain a steady pace without disrupting immersion. A major highlight is the cast of unusual characters that inhabit the resort. Despite their often intimidating appearances, many of these creatures possess unique personalities and surprising depth. Conversations reveal humor, personal stories, and occasional moments of genuine warmth. As Abigail recovers more of her voice, she becomes capable of interacting with a larger portion of the cast, opening new quests and narrative opportunities. These interactions help transform the strange setting into a living world filled with memorable individuals. The worldbuilding is particularly effective because it rarely explains everything directly. Players are encouraged to piece together information through exploration, dialogue, and environmental details. This approach creates a persistent sense of mystery and makes every discovery feel meaningful. The game trusts players to draw their own conclusions about the nature of the resort and the forces that govern it, which adds to the overall atmosphere of uncertainty. Visually, The Abnormal Place stands out thanks to its distinctive artistic direction. The environments combine fantasy elements with surreal imagery, creating locations that feel imaginative and unpredictable. Character designs are equally memorable, featuring an assortment of monsters and unusual creatures that reinforce the game's dreamlike identity. While the graphics themselves are modest from a technical perspective, the creativity of the art design helps the world feel unique and engaging. The soundtrack plays an important role in shaping the mood. Music shifts between mysterious, emotional, and whimsical tones depending on the situation, helping reinforce the emotional weight of key moments. Ambient sounds and environmental effects further strengthen the sense of immersion, making the resort feel like a real place despite its surreal nature. The audio presentation consistently supports the game's atmosphere and contributes to its distinctive identity. Another notable strength is the sense of progression created by the game's structure. Every new area, recovered voice fragment, and completed task contributes to a feeling of forward momentum. Players are constantly uncovering new information or gaining access to previously inaccessible locations, ensuring that exploration remains rewarding throughout the adventure. This gradual expansion of possibilities keeps the experience engaging and encourages continued curiosity. The game is not without limitations. Players seeking fast-paced combat or highly complex gameplay systems may find the experience slower than expected. The emphasis remains firmly on exploration, atmosphere, and environmental storytelling rather than action. Some sections also require patience when searching for objectives or hidden paths. However, these qualities align closely with the game's intended design and are likely to appeal to players who enjoy methodical adventure experiences. Ultimately, The Abnormal Place succeeds because of its originality and commitment to creating a world unlike any other. Its blend of platforming, exploration, puzzles, and surreal storytelling results in an adventure that feels imaginative from beginning to end. Abigail's journey to recover her voice serves as the foundation for a larger mystery filled with strange characters, hidden secrets, and memorable environments. For players who appreciate atmospheric indie adventures and unusual worlds that reward curiosity, The Abnormal Place offers a captivating and distinctive experience. Rating: 6/10
weird game but love it like that dark gothic style
Unique style. Excellent design, music and ambience. Mediocre story But, in my opinion, the game lacks dynamics. Or a more active colorful narrative. Or moments of active gameplay (knife + light infrequent opponents + boss battle). 5.8/10
