Please note, it's not my intent to make the developer feel bad about his game, but I was very miserable playing it, so much so that I could not take more than 30 minutes - obviously, it's not much of a review of the game, it just got so bad that I had to quit. To give at least some positive vibes, I was kinda interested in the character, even though the voice acting was not great, I would be interested in the story if the game was formatted differently. Just out of respect for indie devs, I am not going to refund it, take my money, but I think I am entitled to at least have some fun talking about my frustration. I was constantly fighting controls, camera angles, sticky zones, tunnel vision, and puzzle logic; I even hurt my pinky holding the run button the entire time while trying to rotate. The character will often go in the opposite direction, and no my controls are not reversed, I press left and he drifts right, I press right he goes left. On top of it, I am confused all the time, I can't tell if the puzzle is working properly or not, I can't tell if there is a glitch, you zoom in on certain areas and there is no indication of me interacting with it when I hear a sound. Then I pick up an object with the same button that I use to open doors, I clearly need to take it out of the room, but when I open the door he drops the object. And if that wasn't enough, you are given too many areas to explore with bad cameras, it's hard to follow any kind of pattern, there is too much going on, too many things to consider, there is no way I am wasting my time backtracking this game. I didn't get far enough to evaluate the narrative, and I don't want to critique the voice actings in the indie game too much, but even the volume is a problem, I would have to change my computer sound up and down to properly hear the voice acting.
Feedback:
So 3 things to consider The puzzles and clues do not click with me at all. I might click on an object, I hear sounds, but nothing changes, so I don't know how to interpret that. You give me access to a lot of space with a lot of navigation time, I would have to do a lot of backtracking just to test a theory of why something works or not. Like, don't give too much at once, if you making a puzzle game, make sure the player can reasonably put things together, don't make it too convoluted. The cameras and tunnel vision are pretty bad here. Again, you really have to take into consideration how the player experiences your game, maybe you just need to design it so the view does not change the entire time, focus on simple level design, don't make it complicated if you can't polish the navigation. For the voice acting, I can't even hear it in some places. I don't mind the voice or anything, whatever, but if you can't keep the volume consistent, just don't do it, many devs make good narratives with text and some mumbles. Overall Thoughts: That was honestly painful. If you want to make an atmospheric narrative game, maybe start small, focus on the story, don't try to do anything crazy with puzzles and exploring, do less backtracking. Do one thing right, instead of doing everything wrong. Maybe with a ton of polish, it could be okay, but it's a big 'IF' right now. Sorry, don't take it personally, I just don't want to be so miserable playing games. .....................................
This game.... in simple words.. painful. Unfortunately i thought it would be a fun indie game to checkout but after playing it for about an hour and getting nowhere I am calling this a bust. The camera and motion controls are lacking. Interacting with objects is awful. Its makes noises like you have done something but nothing occurs. There is no clear direction and although in most games that take that approach this is a subtle suggestion on flow to the story where as this game has not flow at all. Honestly its like painful. I don't want to crush developers but in this case it needs some TLC. Def not trying again.
Fool's Paradise is a beautiful indie game. I liked everything about it: atmosphere, music, puzzles. I recommend buy this game. 10/10
Fool's Paradise is a really badly made narrative heavy 3D platformer where you jump around various environments which relate apparently to some schoolkids badly written diary... okay. I guess it's supposed to have some kind of arthouse vibe but it just comes across as, well, bad. There's some meaning behind the narrative, but the game itself is so painful to play and badly made that it's not worth digging into it. Developers should definitely try playing video games to understand what they are and what gameplay actually is before they try making their own one. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this game. The camera controls are the real killer here, there's no effective mouselook, and control of the viewing angles is deliberately outside of reasonable control from the user, which makes the gameplay awkward and unsatisfying. I'm guessing the developer here didn't know how to make the camera follow the character. This defect springs from the limitations of inferior console peasant children's toy gamepads, but on PC we don't have this limitation due to KB+M controls... however, the developer deliberately chose to arrogantly foist this handicap onto PC gamers. Out of spite, or laziness, it's unclear, regardless, once more console peasants and console devs have made gaming worse for everyone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Fool's Paradise is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
