I own this game for Xbox, oculus and now steam deck. Played a couple of hours and abandoned it for several months. Now coming back a few updates later I‘m shocked it’s barely playable on my OLED steam deck anymore. Stutters and slow downs, even on low settings. What the hell has happened? Really sad about this devolution. So long story short: one of the best Tetris games ever created. But if you wanna pick it up for your steam deck, avoid it for the moment till the Devs have finally come up with a proper update. And yes, they seem to be aware of these issues but keep ignoring it. Fingers crossed they will change their mind soon. Therefore now recommendation as SD user.
Incredible interpretation of tetris but one huge issue...it stutters on steamdeck on certain stages. How incompetent of a dev do you have to be to not be able to optimise tetris.. something that worked on my original game boy.

Tetris is the perfect game, and Tetris Effect is the perfect version of that game. Tremendous music, great visuals and gameplay that makes you want to play just a few more minutes every time. A perfect game for the Steam Deck.

Хоть Tetris Effect нельзя назвать настоящим преемником канонических версий с Электроники-60, IBM PC и NES/GameBoy, но все же он сохранил больше оригинального видения, в отличие от Tetris 99 и PuyoPuyo Tetris. Тем более если сравнивать с низкосортными и контрафактными подобиями Тетриса на мобилках, которые водятся в Google Play и Apple AppStore. Тетрис, разработанный Алексеем Пажитновым в 1984 году, спустя десятилетия остается все такой же великолепной залипательной игрой, которая безоговорочно и единолично занимает позицию S+ среди всех компьютерных видеоигр, созданных за все время. К минусам именно Tetris Effect могу отнести не самую лучшую оптимизацию под ПК. Это особенно критично на Steam Deck, потому что из-за довольно большого жора ресурсов не получится без ущерба понизить TDP процессора ради большего времени игры при питании от аккумулятора. А ведь в контексте игры на деке очень хочется как можно дольше играть в Тетрис! Ахаха. И также я хочу всем напомнить, что русская культура — это Достоевский, Чайковский и Тетрис.
I bought this for the multiplayer alone. I played 6 or 7 matches; unfortunately the matching system was out of whack I was getting matched with people way beyond my rank & on top of that I also had a hacker in one of them. Visually I wasn't a fan of all the lighting & effort they made into the aesthetics, it's almost as if that was more important than the actual gameplay. It can make you lose focus a bit when flashing which is irritating because Tetris is a game of precision & I think most people just want a simple Tetris game that's not buggy & straightforward.. Who knows I may come back and explore this game in the future when the multiplayer has been worked on. Right now I'm waiting for the 'Tetris grand master 4' to go on sale, it looks much easier on the eye, but again.. No multiplayer. I'm yet to find a tertis alternative to tetris friends.

tetris for $40 is so absurd
In 2026, this is still my #1 go to Tetris [VR or flatscreen]. #2 Tetris would be the NES version and #3 Tetris would be any Tetris played on a modded PSP Go [even if I started on the Game Boy]. How does me saying it's my #1 go to Tetris help as a review? No funking idea! I have a 31-day challenge for the month of January to write reviews daily for the games I love, so here it is! Okay time to stop babbling...
I enjoyed Journey mode okay, although it was frustrating that the speed would increase or decrease dramatically at random, unchoreographed times. The different game modes are kind of interesting, but mostly I just want to play regular Tetris with the pretty visuals and the procedural music. I can't find that here. Some of the different stages can be kind of overwhelming, too. It hurts my eyes and makes it difficult to tell what's going on. I like some of the stages, but probably only half. Overall, I would say that the normal price of $40 is not worth it, for me.
