«Terrorarium»
I didn't have much fun with this. I felt like I played this before, and I just find this too boring. The price is so high just for an unoriginal game that you feel like you played this already. I hope you do better soon.
Story Terrorarium’s story is basically irrelevant, it doesn’t come into play anywhere other than the few cutscenes found in the story mode. The plot revolves around a space grandma with a passion for horticulture who, after participating a lot of times, has always ended up second on the “terrorarium” contest. After a call from her rival, Dolores, she sets out to obtain new plants with the help of an invasive sentient mushroom species. These mushrooms are called the Moogul and they have several types, but the original species is considered a pest and banned from all planets. Later into the story the contest organizers catch wind about the grandma’s use of Moogul’s and request a sample to determine if she truly has them. After sending a sample, they rule it to be a new species, thanks to the experiments the grandma has conducted on it. At the end of the game she somehow manages to finally win the contest, though there is no explanation as to how or why. It is pretty evident the story is just there to add some fluff, without any real depth or importance. The total count of cutscenes adds up to about 5 or 6 in total, placed in between series of levels with no connection with them or to each other. Graphics The game’s graphics are pretty simple, almost everything is rendered in a low poly style and there is a huge amount of asset reuse. There’re a few different biomes and sets of objects, but that’s only for the decorative ones, those with an effect always stay the same. This also applies for the enemies, which, despite several different ones existing, don’t vary on a level to level basis. The same tree enemy can be found in a winter or a cave biome. The animations are also quite simple for these, at times bugging and repeating in place. Cutscenes also have quite a big amount of issues, such as awkward positioning, models remaining in the background, etc. At times these can look completely absurd, such as when the grandma stands in midair in front of her chair. Sound On top of the graphics not being the best, the sound is no improvement; both soundtrack and SFX are simplistic and repetitive. The soundtrack consists on a few tracks of clichéd “alien” music that repeats level after level. Sadly the SFX are worse, being comprised of squashing sounds and squeals that get very old very fast; every single time the player tosses one of their Mooguls the same scream sound plays, which luckily enough is somewhat quiet. Gameplay Terorarium is described as a puzzle platformer, though this doesn’t fit it at all; most levels are more about keeping the Mooguls alive than about solving any puzzles. This is not made easy at all by the completely nonsensical pathing these have. Whenever the granny is around all the mushrooms follow her naturally, spreading out around her, which often leads to their death. The Mooguls can be kept close by pressing space, but this is only a temporary solution; instead, the game prefers forcing its players to stand aside while any hazard goes off. Every time a patch of grass is burnt, it is in the player’s best interest to stand as far as possible, lest one of the little brainless minions may wander off. It is a constant source of annoyance how, due to the natural positioning of the creatures, they tend to constantly die when close to a hazard. Even walking through a somewhat narrow, read “twice the size of the granny”, passage is a death trap for the little mongrels, leaving the player to watch as they plummet to their death. Besides how easy it is for the little mushrooms to die, the granny, a.k.a the player character, is no better. She will die in a single hit to any of the same hazards that affect the Mooguls with a pair of exceptions. There would be no problem with the feebleness of neither the Mooguls nor the granny if it didn’t mean resetting the whole level every time. The previously mentioned less-than-optimal pathing issue also applies to enemies, which will pursue the player for a while after detecting them. The game also keeps insisting in forcing its players to deal with these beasties in narrow passages where wall hugging becomes the only option. Yet another issue with the game is how simplistic its mechanics are, after the first introductory levels where everything is unveiled it does not evolve; there are no other Moogul breeds past the initial 3 or different objects besides the elevators and breakable ones. All of the game feels the same, just with increasingly longer and deadlier levels. Other than the “story” levels, the game offers a previously mentioned maker mode and community levels. The maker mode is interesting though very limited due to the already variation lacking base game. Where other games feature a mode with full creative freedom, Terrorarium limits its players to clumsily placed objects, which often times do not align or clip through the terrain. Conclusion Terrorarium is a very alright game for someone who knows what to expect; it is no Pikmin or Overlord as hard as it may try. The game is very lacking in a lot of ways, with little enticing for those craving an actual puzzle. Before release it used to have a much more accessible price, but once it came out the price rose to a whooping 20,99€/$24,99 , making it a questionable purchase. Personal Opinion “I went into Terrorarium expecting a fun and colorful little game, what I found was something where I was constantly fighting the mechanics. By the end of the base game, which can be beat in around 4 hours, I was completely fed up with the gremlins and their constant wails when thrown. There is nothing challenging here besides how frail the player is, nothing forces you to think or solve a problem, it just becomes a trudge through level after level.”
Thanks to the Devs who provided a key I have really enjoyed playing this game for the first time today. I can foresee myself spending a lot of hours creating maps (horror gardens) and sharing them online. The game is level based with lots to get your teeth into and make you think on how to progress. The game also has a maker mode where you can build your own maps for your friends to participate in once shared. The idea of being a space granny is adorable and also the different kinds of Moogu (mushroom characters) I find to be very detailed and interesting. I am looking forward to discovering what more there is to this game. For a more detailed review please see my First Look video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B6AhhUk0tI
7/28/20 UPDATE: The game is out now with new levels and new features, so here is my current day review! The game can be broken down in to three major parts: The main story, the community made levels, and the level maker. ★ The Main Story plot itself is fine. You get to understand the character you play as and the the little pikmin-esque creatures you play with, etc., etc... It certainly adds to the game, but what really matters (in my opinion) are the levels themselves. There are 26 levels ranging from very easy to very hard, some of which are designed extremely well! Some of them however aren't. I'd say around 85% of the levels are satisfactory, while the other 15% just aren't either aesthetically pleasing or the puzzle/mechanics are a bit wonky. ★ The "Community Levels" section (and subsequently Maker Mode) is one of the things that makes this game SHINE~ This is where you can play the top 15 levels from the "Inaugural Intergalactic Murder Gardening Contest". These levels are all well designed and highly enjoyable! The only downside being that these levels were made before the release of the game, meaning some objects/mechanics were not present during their creation. The community made section is also where you'll find all of the levels you downloaded from the Steam Workshop. Considering the game only has 41 levels, the 200+ you can download from the workshop definitely helps out if you feel like you need more! *Workshop levels are a completely mixed bag with some being amazing and some being awful... ★ "Maker Mode" lets you design your very own levels using the assets from the game. Thankfully it's pretty easy to use/figure out. This is where I've sunk most of my time. Maker Mode is a great way for people who love this game to share their own level/puzzle ideas! I cannot recommend this enough! Please give it a shot and publish it for all to play :D ☆ The controls are simple and overall good. The camera angle can get a bit strange at times, but it is usually only in certain small areas and easily overlooked. ☆ The devs are a wonderful bunch who are actively talking with their community/fans. I am unbelievably happy that the devs listened to the community and some of the wonkier mechanics/bugs/issues were fixed when the game officially launched. TL:DR This game is a pikmin-esque puzzle game with fine controls and mostly good levels/puzzles. You can create your own levels and/or download others on the Steam Workshop with ease. $25 is a bit steep for me, but I can still recommend this game.
tl;dr - It's fine for a casual game. Build mode has potential https://youtu.be/qRtJgeriJ9Y pros - Build mode seems cool. I'm sure users will come up with really cool and challenging stages - Easy to pick up casual game if that is what you are looking for - The game is cheap, $10 cons - Early access so it is hard to gauge how much more content will be added - No story? - The game might not hold interest unless you are really into puzzles This is one of those times I wish we had more 'recommendation' options other than yes or no. I do recommend this game if you are into puzzle games that you can build your own stages. If you are not into this, you should probably skip it. The game is very casual and the price is low, so it is not a huge investment to have this in your steam library to play every now and then.
Evite perder Moogu no meio do caminho.
Terrorarium: Pikmin x Overlord I hate to say this but this game is instantly forgettable, I went in expecting a pikminesque type game with evil elements ala Overlord. What I got was a difficult to control boring and frustrating experience. There I was excited to play a game that seemed like pikmin with a horror theme, I started the game, loaded into it and pressed new game. The very first cutscene is your character who makes these Terrorariums(?) sitting in her spaceship writing while a call comes through and an annoying voice not even a real language leaves an all too long message congratulating us on being second and how we will never become first. After listening to the message for what seems like forever our character decides to cheat and get the Moogu creatures which are seen as pests and invasive species wherever they go causing planets to be quarantined. OK, not the best start but i can work with that. The next 7 levels are tutorial levels that should be compressed into maybe two levels, With the janky controls and the way the game works, even in the tutorial levels i was left feeling frustrated as i completed the objective but was unable to finish the level as the fruit that I was supposed to get had fallen in a place that was impossible to reach. Suffice to say i did not even complete the tutorial levels. I got to level 6 and was left with such a bad taste for the game that I hardly even looked at it for the next week. Last night I returned to the game thinking that perhaps the level creator and community created levels would be it’s saving grace, however I was sorely disappointed as there are no checkpoint markers and controlling the Moogu can be an exercise in frustration. I attempted to play the winner of the community challenge level and after dieing probably a couple dozen times decided that this game was just not for me. Perhaps I just didn’t give this game a fair chance and once you reach a certain point it becomes better and an amazing experience, however I could not slog through the early content to find a spot where the game became enjoyable. At the asking price of $24.99 I just cannot recommend this game. Overall thoughts: Forgettable
*Full Release Review* Honestly can't recommend Terrorarium. Even with the full release it still seems like early access. I had a lot of problems with bugs and the gameplay was never really good enough to overlook them. Check out my full review here!---v https://youtu.be/_KghUT_HD4Y
In this video I take a look at Terrorarium a maze challenge game with minions. This is a great little challenge game. You need to get to the big guy with enough minions to free him from his bubble. Your minions can be sacrificed for all sorts of reasons and even bred if you need more. The game has numerous levels but it also has Steam workshop where lots of user made levels are available or you can make your own in the games level design feature and share it to the workshop for others. Watch the video to see what the game is like..... https://youtu.be/lmRLDlye2pg Check'n Games, providing you with as many Let's Play's as we can. Thanks for watching.
