You are a captain of a spacecraft. You have you to colonize a planet to let human race survive. You built a citadel and defend it against enemy attacks. This game was a bit difficult for me to review, because I thought it was a deep tactical strategy game, which isn't true at all. For me personally it was a disappointment. The fighting is a bit in rts (with pause), but to be honest it is autoresolved. When you look at this game from a tactical strategy point of view, it isn't a good game, because you have almost no influence on the outcome of the battles. You control a group of soldiers (so not individual soldiers) and before the battle begins you give them orders. That is all the influence you have. Battles are pretty short most are solved within a minute. If you don't like tactical strategy games, then this might be game for you. The game is all about the story and expanding your citadel. You have to research many new buildings/facilities, upgrades, add ons etc. The game learns you all the mechanics of the game, so you never feel lost. On the world map you can play out many missions. The most fun missions are the scavenger ones, where you need to find loot for your citadel and have a limited time to return them. If you look at this game as a strategy game, it isnt a good one, but if you look at this game as a base building/simulation game with casual fighting and a good story stelling then it is actually a fun game to play. The game is in realtime with pause Sounds and graphics are nice. The price is too steep for this one, I think. I would buy it on sale. Devs are really helpful and fast if you have a problem, which is very good. I only recommend it to people who don't want a deep strategy game, but want to try a casual strategy game with a good story and that like base building. I would give this one a 6.5 out of 10 More reviews on our Curator Page
Review - Tempest Citadel
===
RATING: 5.0 / 10 - XCOM's Ugly Cousin
===
Overview
Tempest Citadel is a tactical management game and RTS hybrid. It clearly takes inspiration from classics of this genre such as XCOM, except in this title combat is in real-time and not turn based, which is a rather big difference. You will impersonate the lader of a secret Terran expedition to a very distant planet, the true purpose of this mission is to find the source of a mysterious alien tecnology that fell on Earth years before, called "Interstellar Gift". A team of 100 of the most competent men and women has then been sent through Hyperspace to find answers and then return to Earth. But things don't go smooth, as there are other factions on the same planet, warring between each other and probably also in search for the powerful technologies hidden on the planet. Your mission then becomes to survive and do everything you can in order to secure the technology while at the same time defending from the other factions, and take difficult crucial decisions as Commander. ===
Gameplay Analysis
General Gameplay The gameplay of Tempest Citadel is divided in two segments. The first, and most consistent segment, is the Management one. You will see an overview of your Citadel composed of many windows and menus managing all the aspects of what happens inside and outside of it. You will have to build new facilities, such as Hospitals, Factories, Resarch Centers and so on, each with a specific function and a cost in resources, that are in order, acquired from Ground Missions and passively from Controlled Facilities on the planet surface. Also, you will be tasked with managing the population, assigning each of the available crew members to a role (Resarch, Soldiers, Engineers, Scavengers...) based on their aptitude for that specific work, displayed in their profile. You will also be able tod ecide the equipment of every single crew member, though equipment is needed only by those going to Ground Missions (which always are Combat missions). Keeping an eye on how much space there is left in Quarters and how much Food Reserves you have will be crucial to keep the Crew Morale up at high standards, if it decreases, bad things will start to happen and people will work less effectively. Reasarch is a crucial part of management, you will be able to select several Reasarch Topics, each including many technologies. The more Resarchers and Reasarch centers you have, the quicker Reasarch is. You can also decide priority of each single reasarch, and even stop some if you don't need them quickly. Reasarch will give you the ability to build new weapons, armors, technologies, items and upgrades. Time is however very valuable in Tempest Citadel, and you should do any available mission and task right when it presents itself, unless you arevery under-powered, because letting time flow means enemies will get always stronger, so it is a very goo idea to be efficent and do the most things in the shortest possible time. Not all the 100 members will be available from the start, as many still have to be ready for being released from Cryo Pods, used to survive space travel. Once you get far enough in the Main Quest, a batch of new members will be available to be unlocked, if you have enough space and food for them. New members will alwyas have many different roles and specialities, and it's up to you to decide their job. Thet's not all, there is more. You will also have to decide in some critical matters as Commander. Certain dialogues appearing along Main Story or Side Quests will give you choices that will influence the outcome of the story in more or less severe ways, or at least that's what it looks like. And of course, you will also have to decide what ground missions the Ground Team will undertake, and also do a nice Scavenging minigame at the end of some ground missions to gather resources, where you have to dig in a buker with various tools in the shortest time possible. The management part is overall satisfying and pretty well done, even it not very complex compared to other similar games. Some thyings however are not explained and you will have to figure them out alone, the tutorial is very basic and does not cover many things, and this can lead to frustration because you don't understand how things work. Combat System The Combat is the second part of the Gameplay, and it is Real-TIme, an unusual choice since almost all games of this sub-genre are Turn-Based. There is real-time pause, anyway. Once your team is geared and ready, it will deploy to a Combat Scenario. Combat Maps are generally small, and battles can be played automatically or manually, however manual control is a much better choice. In Battle you will be able to decide your Team's Tactics, Formation and Approach, there are several types and each favors more defensive or offensive manouvers. What changes between them is that depending on what behaiviors you select, your Team will use Items and target Enemies with different priorities. Youc annot decide whan to use specific items, and you cannot even target a specific enemy, everything is automated and controlled bythese AI Behaiviors you can change. There is also a cover system, meaning units in areas displaying a Green Circle below them will be in Cover and get less damage. This however is not explained, and sometimes cover just looks like it doesn't work. In my experience, combat is too much automated, clunky, and obscure to be enjoyed. Sometimes, you will encounter a group of enemies and wipe them out easily in seconds, while some other times that will happen to you. There is no combat log, or any detailed statistic or explaination of what happens in battle, just Armor, Shield and Health bars and damage numbers, almost like it is the combat of an Action RPG but in an RTS. Very confusing, and not explained at all by the game itself, combat mechanics are still a partial mystery to me even if i put quite some time dedicating myself to understand it. I'll remember the first time i seen enemies with Laser Rifles, i said myself damn they are OP because my team got destroyed in seconds. I resarched them after some time. Equipped them on my best soldiers. While enemies always 1-2 shotted my soldeirs with Laser Rifles, mine instead did little damage if they hit at all. Why? i will never know, because the game does not tell anything about what Traits on items do, nothing about hit and miss percentages, nothing about a lot of things that should be explained but are not. Disappointing and approximative, combat is the bad side of this game. Content In 12-14 hours i managed to arrive at 50% completion with all side quests done. I guess the game lasts around 25-30 Hours. Balancing Management part is balanced enough in resource ratios and consumtpions. A bit more Machinery would not be bad as it always is lacking. Combat balance? Not good. Not good at all. Feels more random and luck based than anything else. Challenge Overall, the game is a good challenge, but combat feels too random and obscure to really tell. ===
Technical Analysis
Graphics Very dated for the 3D part, good portraits and backgrounds. Overall, sub-par for 2018 standards even for indies. Sound Decent soundtracks and effects but nothing exceptional. Performance Nothing to report. Stability Nothing to report. AI Enemy AI is very very basic and will just run for you in masses to shoot you. Quality of Life Nothing to report. Bugs / Issues Nothing major to report. ===
Conclusion
Tempest Citadel is a game with decent setting and story that fails to succeed because of obscure mechanics, lacking combat and poor explainations of what is going on. Also, excessive automation.
Casual sci-fi strategy with base building, resource collection and auto-battles. Build a Tempest Citadel and explore the planet of storms. Gameplay: https://youtu.be/o87KGTSzuBk You have a citadel floating above the planet, a shuttle and 100 crew members who can be awakened from cryosleep and used to development of the planet. You create squad, equip them and send them on missions. In addition to weapons and armor, you can use various perks and augmentations to create super soldiers from ordinary people. When a squad descends on the planet, you can choose tactics and formation, but the soldiers themselves attack the enemies. After the battle, soldiers receive experience and resources from the dungeons of the current location. You send resources to the citadel and use them to develop the base, research technologies, produce new equipment, create equipment and upgrades. Unlike most other reviewers, I am not an experienced player of Strategy Games but I found this one sucked me in. The scenes are enchanting and quite dramatic. It took me a while to get the hang of the user interface and I am looking forward to starting again from scratch and see if I can manage my crew much better. I was happy to let the battles fight themselves out but hope that as I get better I can take more control over my troops. The soundtrack is great and adds to the atmosphere. All in all, it is a change to play a game I can take at my own pace. The ability to speed up time is really useful. I feel I am only scratching the surface of the underlying complexity and there are a lot of challenges ahead to really master it.
Defeated the Entire Game in 12.2 Hours Good: Graphically it looks good. Bad Its a point and click, your choices don't matter honestly. It felt like I kept doing the same things OVER and OVER again...watch my troops autofight a battle, click some rooms in a dungeon to loot items, and repeat all steps. As probably said elsewhere, There are worse games but for its price it is just not worth it.
Summary: no regrets buying it. its not perfect. has it flaws? - yes has it questionable design choices? - yes is the graphic medicore? - yes did it made fun? hell yeah! The game is pretty niche, you don´t make much by yourself, you kinda set things up that will then have an effect. in the first glance i underestimated the game´s complexity. you may be only watching the fight, seeing research/production only as numbers but the impact your choices and distributions have is insane. changed some settings and from a devasting loss became a clean victory. in the end i don´t have any regrets buying it, even if i first was intimidated by the low amount of reviews/info/discussions. it kept me good entertained and even forget time sometimes. the game focuses on its strengths and its flaws arent that much of a bother. i can, without doubt, recommend this little gem
Nothing wrong with this game, it just feels about 10 years late. Battles themselves are very dull, I'm not sure why your given the illusion of control as its basically auto resolve. There are worse games but for its price this just isn't worth it.
It's about six hours of gameplay if you play fast, 10~ if you play slow. With that out of the way let's move on. Tempest Citadel is a trippy sci-fi romp into a stormy planet that is trying to be several games at once without really mastering any aspect. Now, this is not to say that this game is bad. I would say this might be one of the best X-Com inspired indie games of the decade. But what I am saying is that there are obvious flaws in Tempest Citadel. You awaken from cryosleep and quickly get shot down. You then do a few missions and locate a flying citadel that you turn into your base. This base is where you construct new facilities and otherwise play the game from. You then launch over a hundred ground missions, which is just an excersize of letting the game auto-complete itself. There are a few different types of enemeies, which you always see at such a distance they all just look like people in armor. You just sort of techrush and get guns and armor to stomp enemies. Where the game gets things right is it *tries* to impose moral choices that are actually single choice answers. At the start of the game you learn that a portion of your crew died in cryosleep, and you can otherwise harvest them for resources. You can however revive them at the very, very end of the game if you keep them; where by then you will have either lost the game by then or not need them. Then the game gives you not one but two different fake chances to play diplomatically. The order hate you and the mechanists eventually turn hostile because you are forced to lauch a suicide mission. This is a great attempt, but the writing starts to fall apart in the middile of the game as you stop caring what these people are babbling about. The Dominion and Order just insult you, the Mechanists don't give straight answers, and the Arcane just sort of exist. The game gets very tedius in the mid-game, and very little variation happens. Only hard core strategy fans should apply.
Good game quite correctly described as a "base building" with a great captivating story. Gorgeous graphics - citadel per se in 3D, 100 nicely drawn team members (you can actually like them); long meaningful research tree. May be called XCOM with battles auto resolved based on initial orders. Certain concepts (like usefulness of some weapons and items) may be difficult to grasp immediately, even despite fairly decent tutorial.
