I love this game. The art is beautiful, with all those little details that speak of great care. The characters are very human and flawed, even if most of them are demons. The whole world of Tell a Demon, and the first stand alone game Asher before it, is a deeply immersive experience and am absolutely looking forward to the next part. The music is nice to listen to and fits the mood of the scens quite well. I'm already invsted and wondering who will make it out unscathed. The world of Asher is not always a nice one, but it is not simply grimdark. There is a determination in its characters to continue and make the most of what they have and I find that soothing in a way. I am no way through the whole game, but I have played Asher and I feel already at home in Tell a Demon. I hope the next one carries on the magic, so to speak.
Very good, the other reviews do a better job at explaining it all. And why it is so good, I just wanted to post a review so the game can get a higher score, and hopefully attract a bigger audience. Buy it!
I couldn't stop playing and now I've gotten all the achievements :((( I really want to know more about the world of Asher. Can't wait for the next game!!
This is a pretty fun game. It's about three hours for one playthrough but I read a little fast. I unlocked some of the endings. Nice art, good writing, nice music, and an overall good game for the price.
This game was kinda disappointing to me. It took me too long to get used to the new fantastical world, understand it´s rules...and then the game was already over and I fell no temptation to play it again. The conversations are a bit slow and the music was too repetitve for me. I liked the visual style and some plot ideas, but most of the game was...well...disappointing. Would not buy or play again. Maybe it was just not my cup of tea. No hard feelings, I will forget it really shortly, since it failed to leave any impressions in my mind. And that´s a pity...it had so much potential.
Fantastic art, lovely soundtrack. The story is complex and the characters have personalities that can be manipulated to some degree by the player's choices. The fantasy world in which the story takes place is meticulously crafted and exquisite. The author really put thought into this and borrowed from the art and history many of my favorite time periods: art deco, Byzantine, 20s era Italy and America, and Greco-Roman come to mind. In general, I dislike stories where nearly every major character has a despicable side. I didn't really *like* any of the characters. Also, for me, this game was so dark that it was monotone. And I say this as a fine appreciator of horror and dark genre, generally. I need some ups to appreciate the downs, if you know what I mean. The setting and backstory are complicated, and the player is thrown into it, so there is definitely a learning curve coming into the story. A summary of the setting would have helped for players who get frustrated by not knowing what is going on (for me, it took at least an hour because I started playing it when I was already tired... ah, well) Still, I hope for a sequel to this one very much. It is definitely worth playing and a true gem.
https://youtu.be/okWMpvFh2dk Multiple point of view characters with multiple endings provides a complex woven narrative that at times bogs itself down with more worldbuilding than needed.
Ignore play time; I played the downloadable version I bought directly from the publisher rather than playing through the Steam client.
Liked:
The characters. I preferred the protagonist from the first game (the remake of "Asher," free on the developer's website) but the protagonists in this game were fairly solid as well—none of them were ditzy (like in many visual novels), stupid (like in many regular novels), or confusingly random (like in poorly written novels). Choice affects character personality... If you choose angry responses, your character will be angry even during text you haven't directly chosen. It reminds me of the game "Cinders" in that way. ... and ability to pick later options. For instance, if the player picks an option for the character to feel vengeful toward another character, there won't be a later option to make a choice that would require trusting the hated character. The option doesn't show up to be clicked on. The setting. Their world is like the 1920's if it were not far distant from the European Middle Ages/Imperial Rome. (Yes, I know in our world the first two were four hundred years apart and the last two were a thousand years apart.) Throw in a bit of magic, a bit of fear, and a lot of hardcore skepticism, and you've got a fascinating setting.
Disliked
A few endings dangle. While only one of the many endings is an actual cliffhanger, the majority of them leave you very aware there needs to be a sequel. (Which is indeed in the works, but is months out, if not longer.) My dislike of this isn't a reflection of whether it's well written, but of my personal taste.
We still don't know what it's building up to! What is Marcurius' goal for the future?
Serious spoiler:
]Marcus is murkier. I quite liked Marcus/Marcurius in "Asher," the first game. He was morally dubious but seemed to really care for Tetrine (despite one of the endings). But in "Tell a Demon" he's even more blatantly "ends justify the means" and since we don't know what his long-term ends are... well, we're made uncomfortably aware it's possible he's a villain.
It was an engaging VN
Beautiful art style, well-written. Took me around 5 hours to get all achievements and endings. A little bit too obtuse at times, and there's some intriguing concepts it hinted at for only a line or two but didn't explore more. (Maybe these were intended as a 'teaser' for a potential future game?) Definitely agree that you should play the free browser game 'Asher' beforehand to get a helpful background on the setting and characters!
