"His face was like an abandoned house, it's windows gaping dark, the lonely emptiness of it a thing to turn away from, to flee ━ for ghosts must live there, or demons, or broken stairways that could crack at any moment beneath one's feet, sending one falling, falling into the abyss of what was once someone's well-loved cellar, now home to a scattering of vermin and of lost and forgotten things." Have you ever wanted to outsmart a demon? In Tell a Demon you can do that and much more. It's a visual novel game set in a 1920s styled fantasy world where the world was once ruled by an immortal Empress. Then it turned out that the Empress was not so immortal after all. her own courtiers had betrayed her, but now it was a hundred years after all of that took place. They always said the Empress casts a long Shadow, and now the Shadow of a dark empire hangs over your head. Face that lingering darkness from the perspective of three characters, Julius, Kalevel and Tell, whose stories are intertwining at each corner, making you choose what their fate brings them. Tell a Demon is definitely one of the more impressive visual novel games I've played. It's quite beautiful with it's different than your average VN artwork and it's intriguing story, world-building and characters. All of this is highly complimented by the game's soundtrack that is very fitting to each scene and immerses you into the story fully. If you are into fantasy, demons and different looking artwork, this game is definitely a great choice for you. I can highly recommend it for anyone.
Some already said it, but it's good to repeat: you probably want to check out the free prequel to Tell a Demon, Asher, before reading it. It's a short game, but does a good job in introducing the reader to this highly-unique setting and characters. Things that happen there are also directly referenced in Tell a Demon at several points, so you'll simply have a better experience if you have the proper context. Going to the game itself, it's criminally overlooked and underrated. It uses 20s-like stylistics coupled with a supernatural story about demons, lurking in the margins of the world that stopped believing in their existence (you can think of them as vampires, as they have similar power and weaknesses you'd associate with those). It features three protagonists, an ancient demon from an era where the land was ruled by an immortal empress, a cursed "shadow demon" who unexpectedly regains his free will, and a young woman who gets trapped in demons' intrigues. You switch between controlling each of them, making choices that can lead to vastly different outcomes for all of them. Here maybe the biggest problem of the game comes in... While the painting-like arstyle is very cool, music climatic and writing solid all the way through, the maze that is Tell a Demon's choice system is absolutely overwhelming. Thankfully, there's one guide for it available here on Steam, because I can't imagine navigating it on my own. The alternative paths have their merit, as they explore different sides of the characters and contain various fragments of their backstories, but I think the same could've been done in more tidy and clear ways. I still hoghly recommend giving it a chance if you like mystery stories and modern fantasy, but maybe don't try to tackle it by yourself... ------------- PS If you're interested in quality visual novels, check out my curator page.
This is something rare. Love it.
I could write a very long explanation on why exactly I absolutely adore this vn, but I'll keep it short. This visual novel is a very fine work of fiction and deserve more attention. The art is astonishing and characters are very well written. Also I keep thinking from time to time about lore and story of this vn and how good it's crafted. Definately check other works of S. A. Welland such as Asher (first in Asher trilogy) and Sunrise.
Beautiful artwork, beautiful soundtrack, beautiful storytelling and atmosphere... This game is just so amazing! I highly recommend playing the first game in the series, Asher, to get the full experience of this wonderfully crafted world. While you can still play Tell a Demon perfectly fine alone, there's a lot to this story that you don't want to miss out on. Definitely worthwhile to play the game several times over!
I jumped into this without realizing it's the second game of a trilogy. Would've cleared up some of my initial confusion with the story and lore, but I powered through it until things started to click into place. Even then, it was a really good read. Loved the lore, the demons, and world building. And now that I've been reading Asher, I can appreciate them a lot more. The game's also unique in the Mind mechanic, which gives you further access to character thoughts and memories. I enjoyed poking around that for further clues and backstory. It's a solid game all around, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Kind of confusing at first, throws a lot of info at you at once and it takes time to kind of know the world and the characters and actually know what you're deciding about; sometimes I felt lost and disconnected from the characters, however the game overall is very original, the art and soundtrack is beautiful and your choices really make difference (and it's difficult to predict what impact will they have). Give it a try, it's obvious a lot of work went into this game.
Follow three characters in an original world that’s similar but still very much different from ours. Disclaimer: Because most adult visual novels, or visual novels in general, use the same engine, I won't go into detail about the technical aspects. All you need to know is that it comes with the ability to save the game at any moment and skip every bit of text right from the start. Of course, using this feature for your first playthrough is not recommended because it defeats the entire purpose of visual novels. This game is actually a second part of a planned trilogy. While the first part is available for free from the developer’s website, the third part is still in development. It’s recommended to play the first part to get familiar with all the connections and characters. There are also several other smaller games that shine more light on some characters, but they’re not important to the bigger story. Another thing I recommend is that you turn off timed choices. If you leave them on, you will have to make a quick decision. Although this might make the experience better because you have to live with the choice, you can give yourself time if you prefer to take things slower. The overall story spreading throughout all titles deals with the aftermath of now dead Empress and demons walking among men. The story jumps through three characters, each dealing with its own problems. Depending on your choices, they can also meet. You can make quite a few choices during the story that will lead to several endings, one for each character. Each of the characters has four or more endings, and some even come with small variations. Unlocked endings can be watched again from the extras menu. SInce you usually get to select between three choices, you will probably have to play quite a few times to find the right path.
