Dreams of Genesis

Engaging short stories with retro visuals and suspenseful atmospheric sound effects/music. The gameplay is not too challenging and the controls are intuitive. The levels are well designed and bring an original twist to the phobias they're aiming at. I was actually surprised by a couple of them, especially Terminal and Hangerval, Indiana. Realistically, the minigames don't go further than tiny jump scares, environmental/psychological/situational horror and unsettling audio design. The best way to approach this game is by treating it as an interactive book consisting of 10 stories with the goal of exploring the boundaries of your fears. Some are longer (Supply Run, Factory or Hangerval, Indiana), and others are disappointingly short (Intruder, Odd Date or Public Speaking). While the content of said games might feel like a let-down, the story behind most is worth the gameplay. The major disappointment stems from Odd Date. It feels more like a troll jump-scare based flash game from the 2010s than a story fit to be in this game. Word to the developer: PLEASE let players fast-forward through text. I had to replay a couple games for achievements and, having already read the story, it was frustrating having to wait for it to prompt me for the "ENTER" key. Here are my personal ratings and reviews for every minigame: Intruder: 6/10 - Funny, surprising twist - Understandably short, there is nothing else to add after the initial twist Father Martin Is Missing: 7/10 - Story is a bit all over the place but stays interesting - Can feel like a turnoff if you don't like religion horror Terminal: 9/10 - This one is my favorite because of the story, the voice acting, the word-association game and the imagery - Gut-wrenching ending mixed with gore and deranging topics - "You Don't Deserve Those Eyes" gave me chills Normal Fishing: 8/10 - While I am a fan of fishing games and the like, this one is NOT one of them. The point of this story feels more about being alone in a never-ending sea surrounded by gigantic structures - Ending was kinda predictable and disappointing Supply Run: 8/10 - Trying not to get lost in the blizzard isn't very hard but can get stressful when losing visual cues like the sparse trees. Reminded me of that Silent Hill 2 boat level where you had to navigate Toluca Lake through the thick fog - Felt like a chore having to cross the map, but then I guess that was the point Odd Date: 3/10 - While having a funny ending and interactions, this game was by far the worst one. The trailer says it's supposed to target the fear of bathrooms, but makes up a story about a spider getting inside (so it turns into arachnophobia), therefore completely losing the plot. Comparing with the other entries in this compilation, a lot more could have been done differently in this one. Visuals in the mirror, bath tub overflowing, lights flickering, etc. Factory: 8/10 - The factory job is (obviously) boring to death, but trying to get perfect punches throughout the entire run can feel somewhat rewarding - Putting the factory job aside, I liked the management aspect of it. Having to starve your child one day and your spouse the other just to make ends meet feels heartbreaking every time - Buy the gun. Hangerval, Indiana: 9/10 - Action RPG with an interesting and original story - Good pace and fight mechanics, not too challenging - The shotgun can shoot twice. Don't be dumb like me and reload after every shot thinking it was firing both shells - The tower took an unnecessarily long time to climb (reaching the top is optional, it's mostly just for the achievement) Public Speaking: 6/10 - Pretty solid representation of the mental toll speaking in public has on someone. Choosing what to say under a time limit while being stared at by eyes (and eventually smiles) actually puts pressure on the player - I loved the switch between black & white hand-drawn eyes to colored, realistic human eyes (reminded me of Kanoguti games). It's an effective visual effect that feels distressing when experiencing the sudden shift - Again, very short. It's also one of the easiest gameplays (time limit is a bit high, not stressful enough) Portal: 5/10 - Not sure I played this one correctly...? I found the correct portal on the 2nd usable frequency (91.1 or something like that). Felt like I cheated the game since the options went from 0.0 to 100.0 - The story felt promising, but seemed like a rushed addition just to round up the number of games to 10 (or at least that was my initial thought after my first exposure to it) Overall, I'm going to give this game a 7/10. While some stories don't exactly feel rewarding and haven't met their full potential, the overall experience was worth the price and I was always eager to start the next story. It was definitely something I was not expecting and it has grabbed my attention from the trailer to the end credits.
i have every phobia in this game
A fun series of short horror games :)
Fascinating experience. Shocked by the insane creativity here. Definitely worth the price of admission. Although as some feedback for the dev - I think almost every idea here could be its own fully fledged game and the shorts were good enough that it made me wish those ideas were explored and pushed further. Feels like they deserve it.
MAAAATE how is 'Intruder' setting the tone that well in like 2 minutes?? I was so intrigued after that first story and the game continued to shock me... in an effort to not ruin the content, these are the best 3 words I can use to describe it looking back; -what -the -f*ck Here's a medal for Mr Hubbard 🏅 Smashed it, well done :) I found a couple oddities here and there, mostly with the shotgun. At one point I gave it floating bullets for eyes... Not complaining though, I felt I had more aura. I thoroughly enjoyed playing and editing Teeth Cutter, and featured 5 of the 10 stories in my latest video. I encourage you to grab the game for yourself and experience the entire thing, I had a wild experience. If you have a spare 14 minutes today, I'd really appreciate your time: https://youtu.be/cLgxMVXm4xE
Love this game, huge fan of short horror especially when it's packed together like this, always a fan of the retro graphics and the sound was great for holding a nice tension during certain parts of each one, hope to see more like this!
MMh some minigames, but very boring games, idont had fun 2/10
Fantastic, lots of variety, story telling, weirdness and plenty of game for the money. Cant wait for more from the dev.
