Alright. The Backrooms: Liminal Space is done and dusted. First off, with liminal spaces games, I only play monster-free entries, so you know it's that. Typically, with the walking sim/megastructure types of liminal spaces games, a story is told via the visuals and maybe some story snippets here and there. And they are often logic puzzles as well. Now, I know this is advertised as having been created by a 12-year-old, which is commendable, but I will judge this game strictly as a game people will spend money on. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3758625575 So, straight off rip, this game has no story, thus departing from the genre standard, and I think that's a shame because the found footage style presentation works well and would benefit from some sort of environmental storytelling, at the least. It is however broken up into chapters via VHS tapes. Tape One is Chapter One, for example. However, while the game has no story, it instead leans heavily on being a series of logic puzzles in the form of finding your way out of each level. Now, to the casual player, the levels (of which I believe there are three per tape IIRC) can seem random, but if you apply the standard rules of exploration to this game, you will find your way out of each level pretty quickly. It took me less than an hour to complete all three tapes currently available (it does look like more tapes will be forthcoming in the future). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3758556740 What are the standard rules of exploration? Well, rule number one is to pick a direction and always go in that direction whenever you don't know where you are going and whenever possible. Which is the applicable rule here. The developer does subvert expectations towards the end of tape two a little bit and also changes things up a little in parts of tape three, but for the most part, this very basic rule of exploration will have you finding the exits in no time. There is also the unwritten philosophy that most human minds will subconsciously choose the left path more often than not, and this applies to the development of these levels. Again, the dev deviates from this norm a couple times, but it's a thing. Conscious decision making has more variation, but when you're just going with intuition, left is generally the path people choose. As for level design, this is definitely a game that wears its influences. Clearly the dev enjoys Backrooms type games and especially the standard visuals of such. Here, the asset usage is sparser, with office furniture and supplies in some areas, domestic assets in others. There is even a small poolrooms area to spruce things up a bit more. The usage of different color lighting will also help you out if you do somehow get lost in these levels and is an effective means of offering some variation to these tapes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3758625357 Here and there are splashes of sounds and music. You will really need to stay in the area they sound off in to listen to the tracks fully, but they are offered periodically. So, what do I think about this game? At a core level, there isn't much here. It's well and truly a walking sim that lacks story but does offer some opportunities for problem solving in the form of escaping each level. However, it's also a pretty short experience and the visual presentation is cool. And the pricing is fair at 99 cents retail. Which is appropriate for what I'd consider to be an experimental game and a step in this 12-year-old's path as a developer. I don't regret my time playing the game, and for that nominal price, I think it's worth a look. It's quiet. Something a lot of people might want most of their lives. It's not just the Liminal Space provided, it's the fact that you're all alone, and your one and only goal is to just explore. It's nice, actually. Nostalgic, and so..bizarre. And it's not only that. What fascinates me is not just the eerie looks, but the emptiness. This is exactly what I call, a Liminal Space. Silence. Emptiness. Creepy. Shadowy. And no life anywhere. The only movement, is you.
This game is excellent, i dig the vibes and the mental mapping i ended up doing to try and find the exits in part 0ne was very fun. Looking forward to additional sections to be added in the future. Keep it up! If you like the creepy atmosphere of the backrooms, this does a great job of encapsulating those vibes! More than worth it for the price, in my opinion! Again, Very well done, Dev!
I only beat tape 1 and already got about 2hours of gameplay getting lost and finding my way again LOL. but very good graphics / audio / atmosphere , nostalgic and cool in some areas ands then some spots are very unsettling / creepy vibes.. I enjoyed this game so far and there was plenty of areas / places I could have ventured on to but end up finding the elevator or spots to transgress in to new levels first.. such a big beautiful game. cant wait to play Tape 2 and for 0.99 this game is a steal :D good job Devs
As someone who played more than 10 Liminal space/Backrooms games I think this game has lots of potential. I do wish it had more level variety though and there are some minor errors I wanted to mention: 1) Loading is mispelled as "Loanding"; 2) The full screen mode (at least on my computer) is semi broken (it's tilted to the upper right and there's a black screen at the lower left corner of the screen, plus the cursor is tilted upwards) but windowed fullscreen works just fine; 3) Whenever I beat a level the game resets to fullscreen. So yeah the game has potential but it needs more varield level designs and bug/typo fixes, but the developer does get the winding maze-like level designs of the liminal space game genre so I can't wait to see what he cooks up next.
Relaxing and zen-like wandering with just a touch of eeriness.
