Tales of Vogar is an enchanting RPG that I discovered on Steam. Its visual design is impressive, and the story is captivating. The game mechanics are well-crafted, with a fluid combat system. It's definitely worth a try!
There are cons and pros to the game. Pros ------ 1. Fun story. 2. Impressive effects for RPG maker developer. 3. Good music for RPG maker developer. 4. Cheap price and worth it for the story. 5. Great work for one persons' project. Cons ------- 1. Story is short. 2. Leveling is not a thing. Highest level for me was 10 and I beat the game. Not impressed with that. 3. Limited character access. 4. Recruiting an army is much faster than expected. (If expecting something like Suikoden, it's not) You recruit about 8 characters before final battle. 5. About 3-4 magic weapons whole game. 6. 2 Katana Weapons whole game. 7. No army battles to play. Suggestions/Considerations/Improvements -------------- 1. Grammar spelling error for Kingdom during ship scene I think. 2. Make expanded story line. 3. Enlarge the map. 4. Add many more towns and cities. I built some before; if I ever had time I could help you. 5. Allow more free roaming for leveling up. 6. Add many more items in the game. 7. Add more monsters in the game. 8. Add more dungeons. 9. Allow recruitment of officers by meeting characters but when recruiting an army you have to purchase people with gold. 10. Allow multiple army battles where you control the battle. 11. The ending was really kind of funny what Adelaine said. I would just cut her out since she is supposed to be dead after all. 12. Add more characters in your party. Not trying to be condescending but just wanted to give you some ideas to make it better, or for your next game if you make another. Feel free to add me if you ever want a large map made. I like to do that kind of stuff for fun. I'm just not good with the trigger parts in rpg maker. I'd buy it again for $10. It's as much as a big mac meal.
Graphics: I would definitely say that this is probably the weakest part of the game, as to me it does not match the standards of today’s video games but still very nice and homey. Some few touches are needed here and there. Some backdrops, such as the one featuring a scroll that appears when the player enters a new chapter, is very noticeably pixelated and looks as if its aspect ratio was messed with. Additionally, the entire game looks slightly blurred, most visible in the main menu (refer to screenshots above). It may be that the game was not optimized to my screen’s resolution but it was very obvious, though it did not majorly affect my gameplay. Finally, there were some font choices I thought were a little boring for this fantasy-type game and the text in the prologue cutscene felt very old with its orange color scheme. But apart from the criticism, the entire style is consistent with a comfortable theme throughout the game, which enhanced my overall playthrough. Effort is clearly reflected from the backgrounds of each major area and does a good job at invoking appropriate emotions for their tone. For instance, the town really did feel warm and comfortable. Additionally, the full scale art that appears during dialogue is a great addition and adds emotion to the characters. 6/10. UI: The UI was honestly really straightforward and easy to navigate. The layout of each dialogue was great and did not clutter the screen. I did find some issues with navigating menus as some buttons required you to press ‘Enter’ while other buttons required you to press click, or a combination of both. Really enjoyed the whole NES type style with them all. But honestly had no major issues with UI apart from the minor issues about appearance. 9/10 Music and SFX: Music was honestly probably the favorite thing from this game. The OSTs were chosen brilliantly and each area, from the town to the prison, matches quite well, establishing the appropriate mood. I only found the battle music a little repetitive in the beginning but fit very well for the scenes of combat. SFX also really polished the game and gave a great touch. From the fire sounds to the lightning, I never came across any sound that was out of the blue or seemed unfitting for the game. They all sounded as if they were actually from the same world. 9/10 Story: Story was a significant part of what made this game so cohesive throughout my gameplay. I do not think it was cliche to any major fantasy plotlines. It was unique, captivating and kept me engaged. My only feedback is that some sort of explanation on the character of Jane would make me even more interested and here appearance was quite sudden. Though my knowledge is limited to only the first couple hours of the game so this may occur in the future. 9.5/10. Main gameplay: I’ve always enjoyed adventure/story games so I may be a bit biased here but it was very fun to play, from the searching around to the combat itself. Many may say that the game uses the turn-based combat system that is very overused, but I felt that it was fine for the game. The enemies were not actually easy and required decent strategy to defeat them. Apart from that I did find the overall encounters to be a little boring, like how the enemies just walk into you in steps the width of tiles to initiate the battle. Some more fluid motion or interaction could spice up the game. Additionally, I did find the overall game to be a little fast-paced, like where a significant area would be left in a matter of minutes, but the length was fine and I did not feel burnt out at any moment of the game. Final note that the addition of achievements could be nice, giving the player more of a rewarding feeling. 8/10. Overall thoughts/Conclusion: This game has great potential and I can definitely see myself playing this in the near-future. The story is captivating and the player is given charming music throughout the game that contributes to the tone of each distinct setting. Same combat system does not leave you burnt out at all and requires decent strategy to succeed. Menu layouts and design are very easy to follow and are made very user friendly, although some buttons’ registration needs updating. Graphics could definitely use some work but I only see that as the most major component of the game. Overall a very nicely developed game with a promising future! 8/10 Areas needing most improvement: Graphics along with some bugs
Nice, short game. Quite liked it
A nice Story Rich JRPG style game. so far im enjoying the story. i kinda like the Glen character xD. even at serious situation in story hes joking around. Im not that much fan of a JRPG style game like this because i feel like it has some RNG when comes to some bosses or even small monsters. But with great story like these i dont care about it xd. Another thing i see most JRPG game does in some UI place that they make the equipment time consuming a bit. Rather then when we back out of selected character, it should send back to char selection again but takes back even more and have to re-select the equip option then character. Overall a great game.
Played the first few hours and so far I'm very pleased with the game. I especially like the fact that I (as a huge fan of the classic RPGs) immediately feel at home while playing. The characters feel like old friends, they each have their distinctive personality and the party is really put together perfectly. I especially love the humor that arises when Glen and Jane disagree on something. I have already been visited in my gaming room multiple times because I was laughing so hard :D Since I am somewhat familiar with RPG Maker games, I immediately noticed the gorgeous graphics and the attention to detail in the maps. I have seldom seen such beautifully crafted scenes, just have a look at the provided screenshots on steam to get an impression. Another thing that lets this gem shine is the music. Oh boy, the battle music alone is so good, you immediately get hyped! One final thing is that there seem to be no random encounters, you can see the enemies on the map and avoid them if you don't want to fight. I am very happy about this fact and hope that in the future there will be more RPGs that follow suit. TL;DR: Excellent classic RPG and definitely worth buying!
The story line begins with Ascan who lost his memories. That catches your interest right away. The more you play the more details are revealed and your curiosity to get to know more about Limor and Vogar gets bigger and bigger. At the end its a great story with more romance then expected, what I liked a lot. It even contains a kind of lesson/take home message... The characters are very well designed, everyone has a distict feature that is recognisable. The dialogues has some very funny and lovely parts without being too pathetic. The jokes add more serenity in the actually sad story making the play not too serious. The wonderful designs of the outfits and appearance should be mentioned aswell. Many details were put into the different scenes and places. Sometimes I just paused to have a closer look, especially the caves or the icy world. The music fitted perfectly to the scenes and helped making a special atmosphere while playing. I really enjoyed the sounds. Every quest also has its own difficulty and used different kind of "mini game" types. Thats why it didnt got boring at all. Also, the varying level of difficulty made the game throughout exciting. You have to develope a strategy on most battles to win, eventhough you also need a bit of luck. Especially the last quest for the final battle is very cool idea. You can easily see that a lot of efford and passion have been put into the game development and i enjoyed it a lot, even if i am not much of a gamer. Definitly recommended!
Great game! The story is well told and well paced. The lighting effects really add to the maps and the battle system keeps you on your toes. Love that the main character is a magic user! Not enough of those! Definitely recommend!
Overall, a very fun little RPG. The best part is really the conversations that the characters have with each other. Some were quite funny, and just helped flesh out the characters and their stories. The only negatives were things that were previously mentioned - the story is good, and the game could've been made longer with developing the storyline more. The battles were a bit unbalanced (lots of heavy hitters, and your ability to heal/resurrect is very very limited), but nothing I couldn't manage. Overall, definitely worth playing!
I like: 1. compressed story to tell 2. hard fights if you are not prepared 3. classic epic-RPG experience (good vs evil story, chars, npc, base) I do not like / I wish it was: 1. very short (about 4 hours) 2. stagnant skills and equipment (nothing to play around with) 3. downed chars do not recieve exp (you have limited battles, why prepare another wall?)
