About

Word From The Developer:
I started this project in 2004, thinking it would be a novel. I finished it in 2025 as this video game. No team, no fans, no budget... but I did it anyways.
Neverspring Chronicles started as a book idea called Durance of Magic when I was a teenager. I didn’t have the patience or attention span to write a novel back then, but the desire to tell the story stuck with me. So in 2009, I switched mediums: I’d make a game instead.
I started taking myself seriously by being brutally honest with myself. I had no idea how to code. I didn’t understand proper game flow or how to write dialogue that worked in-game. I didn't have money to take any writing classes or anything so I had to teach myself... Coding, scripting, writing, pacing—all of it.
I taught myself what I needed to know with whatever I came across, and it probably shows. My only real storytelling education came from two YouTube channels—one focused on movie screenwriting and one on film critique. So the way Neverspring tells its story might feel different from your average JRPG, because it's shaped by cinema.
In 2022, I finally had something playable. It wasn’t perfect, but I put it out on Steam Early Access to motivate myself. The second I did… I realized how far I still had to go. I had learned so much during the development process that all I could see was how amateur it was. So I did the hardest thing for any game dev: I scrapped it and started from scratch.
I rewrote the game from the ground up, then released a new demo. A few kind souls left some encouraging comments but... still mostly silence. I learned a lot along the way, but the biggest lesson I learned as a solo dev? It's that nobody cares. And you can’t blame them! Everybody is busy living their own lives. Even friends and family who said “That’s amazing!” never so much as pressed the like button on a YouTube trailer. They never played a build. Never followed up.
So I stopped asking. I stopped posting. I just... worked.
Meanwhile, real life didn’t stop. Relationships came and went. I was in and out of the hospital. At one point I even lost my home. Literally homeless, car and tent, wiring a marine battery to my alternator to charge my laptop so I could keep working. There were days when I thought: ‘Why am I even doing this? Who is this even for?’
But I kept going. I had come too far and I had to finish this.
In March 2025, I hit publish and released Neverspring into the world, probably to sit quietly among thousands of forgotten titles... Part of me sure it would simply disappear into the same obscurity from which it came.
I couldn't help but remember what my dad told me as a kid when I said I wanted to be a writer:
He took me to a bookstore and pointed to all the fantasy novels on the shelves.
‘That’s your competition,’ he said. ‘You’ll never make it. You’ll be lost in the crowd. Don’t waste your time.’
Maybe he was right.
But what he didn’t know was what it feels like to create something for no one but yourself... And finish it!
No paycheck. No fans, no followers. Just a smoldering ember of hope and the need to create.
So if you're reading this, if you're out there working on something in silence and no one is watching... you’re not alone. Keep going.
And if you want to see what 20 years of quiet effort looks like… Neverspring Chronicles will be here.

I don't know what it is about this one, but I'm hooked. You did it, dev. You got me. I'm gonna play and beat this game. I had initially bought this one when it was in Early Access, then didn't even look at it until just a few days ago. I was in the mood for what I hoped would be a solid indie rpg experience, maybe even another hidden gem like a Forever Home. Let's get a few things out of the way first. The overworld is a clashing of artistic styles and 8-bit/16-bit/RPG Maker default assets. I've seen enemies from RPG Maker 2003 to Aekashics, so clashing stylistic choices there as well. Battle backgrounds have been a mixture of RPG Maker 2003's and default assets thus far from what I've seen. Yet, somehow, it's charming. It works for me. It works for this game. And I couldn't begin to tell you why. The music is great, as it's mostly SNES/16-bit vibe from a purchasable asset pack I recognize, and it works for this game very well. I think I caught one or two more modern-ish styled tracks in there as well so far. Yet, it works for this game. The maps for cities/towns/villages so far have been really good. They feel alive. I'm noticing some great animations here and there, too. A combination of purchasable tilesets with default assets. The sewer dungeon was mapped out fantastically, the caves I just went through were decent, but not great. Presentation is done well, I have to say. The story has got its hooks in me. The protagonist is interesting so far, I'm hoping there's even more characterization as I go forward. The battle system utilizes timing-based combination attacks that I'm getting better and better at as time goes on. So far, battles are very balanced. Another area where this game shines is in its character and battle animation sequences both field and in battles. I've seen some really fantastic custom animations/battle sequencing so far that shows the effort that went into this one. Writing is well done so far. I've not noticed any major grammar/spelling errors. Another aspect I'm really enjoying is the Materia-like Thaumetics system. The customization for each character and how you want to play is very well done. I hope that this system is brought over to the dev's next game and just refined a bit further. I don't quite know what to say except to say overall, that again, this game has charm. It really does. If you're looking for something with effort behind it, where you can feel the passion of the dev, then give this one a go. I think you'll be surprised how charming it really is despite its flaws. To the dev, I'd love to see what you can do with not only a bigger budget, but one single cohesive art style throughout. I hope you get the opportunity to do that.
A well done rpg with plenty of weapons/armor/items to find or purchase. Battles are challenging with a slew of creatures and bosses. There are party switches throughout which keeps the game exciting and fun to play. Plenty of hidden areas to find that have great stuff. Searching everywhere gives the player great rewards. The best is that the dev is dedicated to his players and responds quickly to questions and fixes bugs immediately. I highly recommend this fantastic rpg.
Amazing game, honestly impressive. I've played a lot of indie rpgmaker games, some with better writing or art, but this is the only one that really makes the world itself feel alive. The ambient effects and fauna really make it stand out. I haven't gotten very far yet but I just wanted to show my support. I hope my own game can turn out as well as yours <3
The gameplay was fairly straightforward and 90's JRPGish as advertised and took about 15 hours. I enjoyed the atmosphere and music. The world was dark and a bit gritty with high fantasy and a "thief" main character. What more could I want? Some of the characters had more depth than I expected, but there were also some cliche if not contradictory moments. Like, one of the most mature characters seems like a trickster when you first meet him. I enjoyed the plot. There was more political intrigue and character development than I'd expect in an $8 RPG Maker based game. I really liked unraveling the story. I'd love to see what the developer can do with a larger budget and more experience. There's definitely an opportunity to polish this up a bit more and deliver the story with more of a punch, but it has a pretty good bite already. Overall, I'd recommend to anyone looking for a classic JRPG, but I also may be biased because I watched the developer's story about his experience making the game on YouTube and really wanted him to succeed. If the game has more story fleshed out I'd play it again. I'd definitely pick up a prequel or sequel to this game if they're made because I'd love to learn more about the world & lore. My only major criticism, aside from a number of minor bugs which I've reported (most have already been fixed), is the low difficulty. It's great if you're new to RPGs or are looking to just enjoy the plot without the hassle. I'd have liked more challenging content to go with the abundance of powerful gear and item that's easily acquired. I've recommended the developer add difficulty options instead of simply ramping up the difficulty so that the challenge level is more adaptable to the player's preference.
A fairly solid RPG Maker game. While the game is a bit rough at times, such as when you don't exactly know where exactly you're supposed to go (which was only once or twice), you can tell that the single dev put a lot of time and love into the world. The story is simple but pretty good and the characters had more depth than I anticipated, there's some pretty good lines in there (the goblin like Gorloks are da best). The different art styles might seem like they'd clash and there are plenty of minor bugs such as the occasional (unintentional) missing collision or past events replaying (shouldn't stop story progress) but they add to the charm of the game, the beginning may be where the difficulty is the hardest but the end is also decently hard. An unexpectedly good lovingly crafted 11 hour experience, would look forward to the next story they make should they choose to follow the spirit of creating just for the sake of creating
Started playing this game at the beginning of it's development, and I must say I am very happy to see it till the end. The combat is fun a exciting and you get the freedom of customizing the charters skills. I enjoy the story and the world it has a nice flow and gives you that old school JRPG feel.
I'll say this outright, this is not a perfect game. That being said, it's a passion project and it shows, while there were times I was confused on what to do, it's incredibly fun. The game definitely shines in its story, gameplay and many hidden secrets and flavour dialogue, the characters are also just charming, not just the main characters, but the side characters as well! And while the clashing art styles were off-putting at first, the game more than makes up for it with all of its other great elements combined (The humour in this game is also great, there's this one dnd joke that just made me wheeze) In my opinion, this game is worth your time and I am grateful to have gotten the chance to experience it, I'll definitely keep playing even after I finished the game, it's just that fun.
Pretty cool game. Definitely gives that 90s rpg feel, like Shining Force. It also has some cool combat elements, such as attacks that work better given certain conditions, which makes the combat more interesting. That part of the combat reminded me on Xenosaga 2.

I do not feel like I played it for 8 hours. I am still in the very early stages of it and other than saying I like what I have experienced, I have very little to comment on. If you like Jrp's, this is a very solid game. Well written, decently paced. Music is good. I want to save the rest for an actual review of it. I love his character designs storytelling and sprites.
