Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings™ Game

A cosy game ideal for beginners like myself. Some days I just play for an hour or so wandering the site foraging and being a hobbit, I treat it as a form of self care

A cozy, relaxing, wholesome experience. It is fun, in a slow, very mindfull way. I love to play it when I need to slow down and remind myself to live one day at the time.

For what it is, it's a cute little self-contained game. I picked it up for 40% off and I think that's a fair price for it. Whimsical, no-pressure, and a good game to keep your hands busy while catching up on your podcast or audiobook backlog.

This is not fun... I played through the first day of gameplay, which took approx. 42 minutes. In those 42 minutes, this is what I learned: Hobbits are rude and stupid, Nobody has any kind of memory, and hobbits fight with food. But not in the fun way. I'm not even 100% sure who this game is made for. It doesn't seem to be very good at anything. Everything is slow, and time-consuming (which I get is the point to the day-cycle). I dunno. It just feels like at best its slow and boring, and at worst its tedious and time-wasting. I think the best thing I saw was the fishing, but I'm not sure if that's even worth the time it takes to do. At no point did I feel like anything I was doing was worth doing, and It said I was only like 34% complete with the tutorial after wasting an entire day being forced to wander around and chit chat with a bunch of degenerate lay-abouts while completing menial tasks that feel pointless and forced. Hard pass on this one, peeps. Refunded. (PS: My Computer's Name is Helm's Deep. I am a huge LotR fan, but this ain't it. Trust me.)

I wish I could recommend this but its a pretty basic game that's carried entirely by its setting. My biggest gripe is that you can't customize how long the days are though. It feels like I have rush around so much trying to get things done instead of a more relaxed farmsim experience I expected. Not having that as a setting is such a basic feature that's been asked for constantly since the games release and still not implemented. I'd pick up on sale for $10-15 but anymore than that its not worth.

I wish this game was more interactive. It talks about life as a Hobbit, but you can't actually live it. There are no voices, not even for Gandalf. Just weird sighs. No singing, dancing, drinking, or pipe-smoking in a hobbit game? You can't buy anything at the Green Dragon, you can barely speak with NPCs (most just stand with awkward speech bubbles and glitch out), limited seasonal crops, can't sit on any chair, and you can't eat anything unless its at a meal party, I'm the most starved Hobbit in the game as I sometimes only eat once per day! It became incredibly repetitive within the first season, which was only 14 days long. The one best part is watching your pantry fill up with food and clapping at animals.

Despite all the negative hype around, I decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did. The graphics are lovely, music is great and it runs really well on my steam deck. There are lots of quests to do, as well as your normal farming, foraging and fishing. If you are not sure about this one, get it on sale and just have a go it's well worth it!
