Taken Souls: Blood Ritual Collector's Edition is a hidden object game (HOG) about a policeman trying to solve a murder mystery case and encounters souls. This is another typical HOG that you'll encounter on Steam, but this one has a few interesting added features to it it help you find clues and other story elements. The camera you have will take pictures of evidence you find. You also have a UV lamp to find fingerprints, which will upgrade your tools. In your police office, you have things that will help you solve the case and piece things together. The game is taken place in Paris, France. There are a few cutscenes in the game to watch. The characters look weird as usual, but I appreciate the fact that they move when they speak to you. There is music throughout the game that will change with certain locations and the characters will speak dialogue to you. I don't know what it is about these HOGs, but most of them seem to be not as intriguing as they lead on. I wasn't fully invested in the story as I didn't find it very entertaining.
Taken Souls: Blood Ritual Collector’s Edition, developed by Space Monkey International and published by Shaman Games Studio, is a hidden object adventure that leans heavily into gothic atmosphere and occult mystery, aiming to deliver a dark detective story set in a supernatural version of Victorian London. It presents itself as a classic genre experience enhanced with grim themes, elaborate environments, and a story that gradually escalates from grounded investigation into something far more otherworldly. While its ambitions are clear, the execution is a mix of evocative strengths and noticeable rough edges. The narrative follows James Voodoo, a young detective drawn into a disturbing series of ritualistic murders that plague the city. What initially appears to be a grim but conventional criminal investigation slowly reveals deeper conspiracies involving forbidden rituals, unnatural experiments, and a powerful figure obsessed with transcending mortality. The story blends noir-style detective work with occult horror, frequently shifting tone from methodical crime solving to cosmic dread. This slow transformation of the plot is one of the game’s more compelling aspects, as it encourages players to question what is real, what is superstition, and how far human ambition is willing to go. Gameplay is rooted firmly in the hidden object adventure formula. Players move through a large number of locations, searching for items within densely packed scenes, solving standalone puzzles, and completing mini-games to progress the story. These elements are framed as investigative tasks, with mechanics such as examining crime scenes, collecting evidence, and referencing a diary that tracks clues and objectives. While the core interactions are familiar to fans of the genre, the game attempts to contextualize them within the detective narrative, making item hunts feel like part of an ongoing case rather than arbitrary obstacles. The Collector’s Edition adds a substantial amount of content and convenience features. A built-in strategy guide, hint system, adjustable difficulty settings, and a detailed journal help prevent players from becoming completely stuck, which is particularly useful given the game’s sometimes opaque puzzle logic. Bonus materials such as concept art, music, and extra scenes add value for players who enjoy exploring a game beyond its main storyline. In terms of sheer quantity, there is no shortage of content, and the game can last several hours depending on playstyle and familiarity with hidden object mechanics. Visually, Taken Souls: Blood Ritual excels at establishing mood. The environments are richly illustrated, filled with fog-drenched streets, dimly lit interiors, and unsettling supernatural imagery. Many scenes are layered with detail, rewarding careful observation and reinforcing the sense of a city suffocating under dark influences. The color palette leans toward muted blues, grays, and reds, reinforcing the grim tone. Sound design complements this aesthetic with ominous music and ambient effects that heighten tension, though voice acting and audio cues can feel inconsistent in quality. Despite its atmospheric strengths, the game struggles with pacing and technical stability. Hidden object scenes and puzzles are frequent, sometimes interrupting the flow of the narrative just as tension begins to build. For players invested in the story, this can create frustration, as progress often feels artificially slowed by mandatory item hunts. Technical issues, such as bugs, unresponsive interactions, or occasional crashes, further detract from immersion and can make progression feel unreliable rather than mysterious. The puzzles themselves vary in quality. Some are cleverly designed and thematic, encouraging logical thinking and pattern recognition, while others rely on trial and error or unclear rules. This inconsistency makes the experience uneven, with moments of genuine satisfaction followed by segments that feel more like busywork than meaningful problem-solving. For genre veterans, this fluctuation may be tolerable, but newcomers may find it discouraging. Ultimately, Taken Souls: Blood Ritual Collector’s Edition is a game that embodies both the appeal and the pitfalls of traditional hidden object adventures. Its dark Victorian setting, occult storyline, and abundance of content give it a strong identity, particularly for players who enjoy moody mysteries and supernatural thrillers. However, technical shortcomings, uneven pacing, and reliance on genre conventions prevent it from fully realizing its narrative potential. For dedicated fans of hidden object games who value atmosphere and story ambition over polish, it offers a lengthy and thematically rich investigation. For others, its flaws may overshadow the intrigue it works so hard to create. Rating: 5/10
