Tailypo:The Game
A buggy and frustratingly short adventure game that lacks identity and is way overpriced.
Pros:
👍
Cons:
👎 👎Lots of bugs and graphical glitches. 👎Very short – Only 2-3 hours of gameplay 👎Voice acting is very amateurish and lacks emotion 👎Story is uninspiring and ends abruptly.
Short Analysis
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Tailypo:The Game. To begin with the game has only a maximum of three hours of gameplay and I am sure it could be completed in less.Priced at nearly £16 it is way too expensive and doesn’t reflect its price tag in quality, story or looks. The opening sequence of the game took me nearly an hour to complete because frame rates were dropping to 3FPS and it felt very disorientating. I kept getting stuck on mountain sides and behind trees and it was incredibly dark and difficult to see where you were going. It was a very frustrating experience. The game is a mixture of genres but doesn’t excel in any area. One half point and click adventure and one-half survival. To begin with you are located in the city. You will converse with a few characters through a frustrating dialogue exchange. The voice acting is terrible and there is no emotion in the speech. Through these conversations we learn the story and the tragedy that sends the protagonist to the mountains. When arriving in the mountains the game turns into a survival game but it is the most basic survival I have ever experienced. Find wood, kill two deer and fish in a lake are all you are required to do and none of them pose any difficulties. However, it did take me a while to work out how to collect wood. There were trees everywhere but I could not harvest them. After searching around, I realized that there were a handful of trees directly outside the cottage that I could collect but nowhere else! You have a health meter which will decrease if you are attacked by boars. These are the only enemies in the game and are not very plentiful. They are easy to kill with your shotgun or avoid and do not pose any threat. The only threat you will face is a random chase sequence which initializes now and again referring to a strange beast. You must run as fast as you can to avoid it. You never see the creature but it does inject a much-needed boost of adrenalin and an interest in who this creature is. Unfortunately, the story with the creature never really evolves and this is where the game falls down. There is also an encounter with a strange character that is never mentioned again. These story arcs should have been the basis of the game and developed gradually and with tension but they just petered out and the game ended. There are numerous bugs and graphical glitches throughout the game. I got stuck on mountain sides and had to load a save game. My character could not move after a save game was loaded forcing me to start over. In the mountains the graphics lose definition sometimes and frame rates drop dramatically when playing. The game has hardly any horror elements. I am a big coward when it comes to horror but nothing remotely scared me throughout the game. The story about the monster sounded promising and the musical score did its best to enhance the fear but it fell flat and didn’t work. The game is described as a choose your own adventure but I found that the story was very linear and no matter what choice you made during the conversation parts led to the same conclusion. I know this because I chose different answers after having to restart the game and it made no difference. I must admit I didn’t collect all of the journal entries so I cannot comment on the “True” ending to the game. The ending was bizarre though and afterwards I was left with astonishment that it had ended so abruptly. Overall, this was a disappointing and short game that wasn’t scary or interesting. The storyline with the monster wasn’t developed very well and didn’t create tension, fear or excitement. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1853428249
Story
The story is incredibly short and I could tell you exactly what happens in four lines of text so I will leave you to experience this if you play the game. The opening sequence was quite interesting. The premise did interest me and I was looking forward to learning more about the mythical beast called Tailypo. The city scene just acts as a short prelude to why the character goes to the mountains. Once you are in the mountains you hear the monster now and again and learn a few extra bits of information through journal entries, but that is it. The story is massively underdeveloped which culminates in a lack luster ending.
Gameplay:
🕹️ The interface used to progress the story is very annoying. Instead of pressing the mouse button to progress the conversation, you have to move the cursor over two very small arrows. Why!? The story is told with a mixture of computer graphics and real-life scenes. I thought using the real-life scenes felt a bit lazy plus they had annoying loading screens between scenes. Once you are in the mountains, the game becomes a survival game. You have a radio, which you can contact the ranger with. Although this sounds interesting the conversations are boring and add nothing to the storyline. It is absolutely miles away from the interaction you experience in Firewatch. You also possess a flashlight that doesn’t really work. It won’t light a passage for you. Sometimes I wondered whether it was turned on or off. This could have been a useful tool to inject a bit more horror into the game but it proved useless and I never used it. The same goes with the binoculars. I found no use for these whatsoever. You can zoom in with them but to what purpose? You also have a journal where you can read entries that you have collected along the way. Supposedly if you collect all of the journal entries you can reach the “True” ending. I suppose this adds an extra incentive to find all of the journal entries but to be honest the story wasn’t interesting enough for me to want to try. The journal entries I found added a little extra to the story but there wasn’t enough about the monster to build tension and give the monster a background. You have a shotgun with unlimited ammunition. The shooting mechanics weren’t too bad and it was easy to aim and shoot animals needed to feed yourself. The character was always apologetic when doing this which I thought was a nice touch. The gameplay plays out like a diary. Day one you need to collect wood and food. Day two you need to collect food and wood. It is all very repetitive and easy to find these things. Now and again the game threatens to intrigue you but then disappoints. The monster scenes are the same. You will be collecting your wood or food and then you are told the monster is nearby and you must run. The music kicks in and you sprint 200 meters and the danger is over. Towards the end of the game there were some interesting scenes but again they were short lasting and didn’t create nearly enough tension or drama. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1853428433
Graphics:
📺 Graphics were poor. There was no background scenery and a lack of landmarks or places of interest. There were quite a few glitches where graphics would lose colour and detail.
Conclusion
A disappointing horror and choose your own adventure that fails in every aspect. Definitely not scary and choices don’t seem to matter. The story and character development was nonexistent and it is way over priced for the quality and amount of content.
Tailypo: The Game
Tailypo appeared out of nowhere and I was curious to check it out. It's a first-person story-based walking simulator with some choices in dialogues + survival and horror elements. If you played Firewatch you may remember some kind of an introduction in the beginning of the game. Tailypo starts the same way and this part is actually good (around 30 minutes of playtime). Almost all aspects about this part of the game are good: + A decent story with a good storytelling. + Ok music and voiceovers, decent graphics and good performance overall. + Attention to details with some cool stuff from 80's. But after a promising start main character has to retreat into the wild after some tragic events in his life. And it's a breaking point where things become tragic for players. - Gameplay in actual wilderness is so atrociously bad that it's hard to describe (imagine a school project survival on Unity) and even harder to accept after relatively good start. - Not only gameplay is horrible in this part of the game - visuals are bad too. In addition to that - Core game mechanic is annoying after 5 minutes of gameplay. Literally it's a "gameplay stopped to see/read anything and click Left Mouse Button(LMB) here to accept/play further". You may think that it's a normal thing. It is a normal thing when you should read a note for example and it's made this way in many games. It's not a normal thing when it happens like "Read a Note - LMB" --> 5 seconds later "Look! Doge! - LMB" --> another 5 seconds later "I want cheeseburger! - LMB" and so on. I guess you get the idea. - Game is horribly overpriced (It's 39.99$ so you know, as price is not available in some regions yet) I believe that developers tried to make a good game, there're some good things and you can actually see a lot of effort in some details. At the same time, I can't recommend this game in its current state even if we don't take into account the ridiculously high price. It could've been a good walking simulator with non-linear storytelling, but I'm afraid that it's too late for this. Let me save you some time: The 'game' doesn't actually start until about 30 minutes in. Before that? IT'S A CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE BOOK. Pick your trauma backstory, basically. Hard pass, because what was even the point of all that?
Unfortunatelly, I couldn't even properly begin. As I started, as a proper gamer I rolled up the settings to make it right as rain for my machine, it looked fine and all was well. But as I reloaded into the second location, the controlls became nonsense for some reason, mouse sensitivity on 0, FPS so low the game jumped, and as much as I tried (even restarted the game, closed it for good and began again from the beginning), the settings wouldn't allow themselves to be chenged and always returned into this useless nightmare. Without mouse to turn, I couldn't play. Sorry game. Maybe you are good, but you are broken.
