https://store.steampowered.com/app/248610/?snr=1_5_9__205
Wow this game is bad! I could accept very bad visuals. The lack of variety in models and gameplay just ruin it. Why do so many TBS games suck so hard.
Fun, small game :) Takes some thinking, don't be fooled!
I enjoy this game. It's got a good string of single-player missions with variety, but it's also got a fun (and oft-hilarious!) multiplayer mode. Graphics are quite good for a top-down tactical turn-based game, and the developers really listen to their player base. I hope more folks find, play, and enjoy this gem!
Tactical Troops: Anthracite Shift is a methodical, systems-driven tactics game that prioritizes positioning, foresight, and calculated risk over spectacle or cinematic flair. Developed and published by QED Games, it offers a distinctive take on turn-based strategy by removing the traditional grid and replacing it with a more fluid movement system. This design choice immediately changes how the game feels, shifting the focus away from rigid tile-based planning toward a more organic interpretation of space, line of sight, and engagement angles. The core gameplay revolves around commanding a small squad of soldiers through a series of mission-based encounters on a hostile alien world. Each unit operates on an action point system, where every movement, shot, or tactical maneuver consumes a portion of a limited pool. This creates a constant tension between advancing, attacking, and preserving enough resources to react to threats. Because the game minimizes randomness, outcomes are largely determined by how well you plan your turn rather than by chance. This makes each decision feel weighty, as even a minor miscalculation—stepping into an exposed position or overextending a unit—can quickly spiral into failure. Combat unfolds at a deliberate pace, encouraging players to think several moves ahead rather than react impulsively. Positioning is everything, and the absence of a grid means that angles and distances must be judged more intuitively. The game places strong emphasis on line-of-sight mechanics, making terrain, obstacles, and elevation crucial elements of every encounter. One of the more interesting additions is the use of teleportation mechanics, which allow both your squad and enemy forces to reposition or attack from unexpected directions. This introduces a layer of unpredictability that forces players to remain adaptable, even when executing carefully constructed plans. The variety of tools at your disposal supports a range of tactical approaches. Weapons, armor, and gadgets can be combined to suit different playstyles, whether you prefer cautious, defensive positioning or more aggressive, high-risk strategies. Enemy encounters further reinforce this need for adaptability, as different enemy types require different approaches to overcome. Some prioritize brute force, while others rely on positioning or numbers, pushing you to constantly reassess your tactics rather than relying on a single dominant strategy. The campaign offers a solid number of missions with varied objectives, from eliminating threats to securing areas or surviving waves of enemies. While the mission structures can occasionally feel familiar, the changing layouts and enemy compositions help maintain a sense of challenge. There is also a multiplayer component, including both online and local options, which adds replay value for those interested in testing their strategic thinking against other players. This competitive element highlights the depth of the mechanics, as human opponents tend to exploit the system in ways that differ from AI behavior. However, the experience is not without its inconsistencies. Enemy AI can be uneven, sometimes demonstrating clever positioning and coordination, while at other times behaving in ways that feel inefficient or erratic. This can occasionally break the immersion of what is otherwise a carefully constructed tactical system. Balance is another area where the game shows its limitations, as certain equipment choices can overshadow others, reducing the incentive to experiment fully with the available arsenal. Additionally, the lack of strong character progression or individuality among squad members means that units can feel interchangeable, which diminishes the emotional impact of losses. Visually, the game adopts a functional approach that emphasizes clarity over detail. The top-down perspective and simple environments make it easy to read the battlefield, which is essential for a game built around precise positioning. However, this comes at the cost of visual personality, as the environments and character models lack distinctiveness. The audio design follows a similar path, providing adequate feedback without leaving a strong impression. Despite these shortcomings, Tactical Troops: Anthracite Shift succeeds where it matters most—its core mechanics. The gridless movement system and emphasis on line-of-sight tactics give it a unique identity within the genre, offering a fresh perspective on squad-based strategy. It rewards careful planning, punishes carelessness, and provides a satisfying sense of accomplishment when a well-executed plan comes together. In the end, it’s a game that will appeal most to players who value thoughtful, deliberate gameplay over presentation and narrative depth. It may lack the polish and personality of bigger titles, but its underlying systems are strong enough to carry the experience. For fans of tactical strategy willing to engage with its nuances, it offers a challenging and rewarding journey. Rating: 7/10
Impressed how bad it is.
Nice and tactical. Good campaign.
