Silent Service 2 to wirtualna symulacja życia podwodnego okrętu podwodnego. PLUSY:

Realistyczne grafiki i dźwięki
Wiele różnych misji do wykonania
Duża liczba jednostek i broni do dyspozycji
Możliwość kierowania i wyposażania okrętu
Dobre wprowadzenie i instrukcje do gry.
MINUSY:

Może być trudna do opanowania dla początkujących graczy
Niektóre elementy interfejsu są nieintuicyjne
Brak możliwości zapisania gry i powrotu do niej później.
Podsumowując, Silent Service 2 to świetna gra dla fanów symulacji i gier strategicznych. Ofertuje dużo zabawy i wyzwań, ale może być trudna dla początkujących. Mimo kilku minusów, polecam ją wszystkim, którzy lubią gry z gatunku symulacji i strategii.
Gameplay is impeccable. The accompanying manual is typical of the period when computer games were also classrooms imparting history of nations and people.
An old game, but still great.
Classic blast from the past
i like the battles
It is impossible to get the enough of the key commands required to have this game function properly on any PC or laptop. Very frustrating.
This has always been one of my favourite simulations...... it's not a game :) Even with the crude 1990's graphics, it takes me back. I like that it can be as easy or as difficult as you choose, something not all other games offer. The one drawback, and I don't remember if this was true in the original version, is that when you resume a saved game (a war career), not matter how far in you are, it forces you to watch all the news updates from pearl harbour to the present. Still love it.
Played this game on my first computer, A Magnavox 286. Still one of the favorite games I have ever played and it still stands up.
id get so lost in these submarine games back in the day in the xtra bedroom with all the old filing cabinets id pretend i was actually in a sub methodically planning out the attack and biding time to carefully sneak up and strike and then dissapear, i love the nastalgia
Silent Service 2, developed by MicroProse and now available again through Nightdive Studios and Atari, is a submarine simulation that brings players back to the tense waters of the Pacific theater during World War II. Originally released in 1990, this title represents the kind of detailed, slow-burn simulation MicroProse became known for, and even decades later it remains an intriguing look at both the history it depicts and the era of gaming it came from. While its age shows in obvious ways, its focus on immersion and tactical depth still provides a unique experience for those with the patience to dive in. The game places you in command of an American submarine, offering multiple ways to engage with its systems. You can select short scenarios that recreate historical encounters, experiment with random battles, or commit to a full career spanning the length of the war. The career mode is especially compelling, as it places you in the role of a captain making long-term decisions: choosing patrol areas, determining when to engage, managing torpedo stocks, and adapting your tactics as the war evolves. This long-form approach emphasizes the slow pacing and meticulous decision-making that defined submarine warfare, rewarding careful planning and punishing recklessness. Each submarine type available reflects the progression of technology during the war. Early boats are fragile, with limited firepower and shallow dive capabilities, encouraging cautious, hit-and-run engagements. Later models offer improved durability, deeper dives, and larger torpedo capacities, allowing for more daring attacks on convoys and warships. This progression mirrors the historical development of submarine warfare and ensures that the game never feels entirely static, even if the overall mechanics remain consistent. Enemy vessels also vary greatly, from unarmed transports to heavily protected convoys with escort destroyers, forcing you to adapt and learn new approaches for survival and success. Visually and sonically, Silent Service 2 is very much a product of its time. When it first released, its use of digitized ship images and atmospheric sound effects gave it an edge over earlier simulations. In today’s re-release, however, the graphics are rudimentary, the sound design sparse, and the interface clunky by modern standards. Yet, in some ways, these limitations add to its charm. The grainy visuals and minimalist design place the focus squarely on gameplay and strategy rather than spectacle, which suits the methodical pace of submarine combat. The lack of modern conveniences, however, also means the game can feel unforgiving to newcomers unfamiliar with retro interfaces. Where the game excels is in its ability to generate tension. Moments of waiting beneath the waves, listening for the pings of enemy sonar, or lining up a perfect torpedo shot at periscope depth carry an intensity that few games replicate, even with more advanced technology. The suspense of stalking a convoy or the relief of escaping depth charges taps into the psychological side of submarine warfare, where patience and nerve are as important as tactics. This pacing won’t suit everyone, but for those who embrace it, Silent Service 2 delivers a sense of atmosphere and immersion that holds up remarkably well. The downside is that the gameplay can sometimes feel repetitive. Long patrols might pass without incident, and the cycle of spotting ships, lining up torpedoes, evading escorts, and retreating to safety repeats often across missions. Combined with the dated interface and steep learning curve, this can make the game difficult to recommend to players who prefer constant action or streamlined mechanics. For enthusiasts of military history or simulation purists, though, this slower pace is part of the authenticity, mirroring the reality that submarine warfare was often a waiting game punctuated by brief, high-stakes encounters. Ultimately, Silent Service 2 is a snapshot of an era in both gaming and history. It is unapologetically complex, demanding, and deliberate, offering an experience built on tension, strategy, and immersion rather than spectacle. Its re-release gives modern players the chance to revisit a classic that helped define the submarine sim genre. While not for everyone, it remains a rewarding experience for those willing to navigate its challenges, providing both an appreciation of its historical subject matter and a glimpse into the design philosophies of early simulation games.
