Table of Tales is an immaculately executed glimpse into what VR gaming can be. The game places you in an attic in front of a magical board game left by a relative. At the turn of a key the game springs to life in a mix of tabletop board game and animated popup book, complete with a magical talking bird serving as narrator and dungeon master. You can pick up and look at game pieces, and the game unfolds with familiar tactical combat mechanics. Although the combat is simplistic for the most part, and the choice driven scenes and story is still fairly linear, it is told very well. The dungeon master narrates all of the character lines and story telling, instantly giving it a DnD atmosphere. The popup art style creates a really enthralling scene that moves and transforms before you, without you moving. Unfortunately it's very short, and took me around 4 hours to do a single play through. It's a more narrative driven experience than Demeo, and personally I prefer this style. If the developers were ever to create a more elaborate game or something that can be more like a DnD campaign, it would be perfect.
The first refund request I ever submitted. Despite 'VR support' my Index controllers were barely working. Normal trigger clicks were not picked up by the menu items, Items would not drop from my hands when I would release them etc. Bugged mess. Not worth even a 90% discount.
This is a GREAT little game. Love the setting, the board feels a little Minecraft + Lego. I don't care! It's a great storyline. Gameplay is not boring by any means. Different ways to beat each level. I like the dice rolling to achieve objectives based on stats. One narrator, doing all the voices, just like a DM. Well worth a few bucks for a few hours entertainment. I would purchase DLC for another story line.
Before anything, here is a Disclosure: I received a free review copy of this product from https://www.keymailer.co So thank you so much for the key and opportunity to experience this epic adventure! I loved the vibe and especially the voice actor of birb narrator, Arbitrix. From the beginning till the end the adventure I experienced was told in a good pace, sometimes confusing, but that is alright, after all it was a one big mystery that was revealed in the end. In my playthrough:
the villain was Thomas the Alchemist, Horatio sacrificed himself to save everyone and the world, Nuna and Hammer, my two babygirls survived and mourned Horatio in the end. I felt bad for him and for the navigator too, cause I was clueless about how to win the final boss fight and so the game after 2 defeats spawned navigator for us to help us :< but she died during battle too.
I reccommend this game to anyone who loves turn-based strategy games, fantasy setting (pirate specifically) and tabletop. It was hella nice adventure and I had a lot of fun! Thank you so much again! rating 10/10
This is a review for the VR version. This was among the first VR games I played and completed, because I usually lose interest and turn to something else, 3-4 years ago and I liked it. I thought the way the map looks, pops up and stuff, was really cool and that it looked good. I still do, but this second, recent playthrough was almost a chore. It just doesn't control smoothly enough even though it's comfortable to play sitting down. You sometimes have to basically reach for stuff in an awkward way. After playing games like the Demeo games. Townsmen VR, Deisim and stuff this just feels so restricted. I'd love to be able to rotate the map and stuff. Also the story is really shallow. I'll still give this a positive review because I liked it at first. and if you can get it for 5$ or so I'd say it's worth trying out, but if this looks fun to you and you haven't tried the Demeo games you really should check them out.
Now I want to preface that I bought this game thinking it was a D&D-like game. I should also note that I was playing this in VR. Pros: Quick, easy interface with little experience in tabletop gaming required Story is relatively simple and enjoyable for what it is It is fully voice-acted with DM-like experience through a mechanical bird Cons: Linear story, very few choices that change the overall story (from what I've seen at the least) The dice-roll checks seem to be greatly hit or miss Way too many gimmicks in the missions which can make the game feel rather unfun at times Overall: The game feels more akin to a VR-ified version of Shining Force than D&D. The game isn't bad, but I wouldn't call it stellar in any capacity. At the respectable price of $19.99 USD, this game is definitely worth that price range. Give it a go if you like strategy-focused games. Despite my criticisms, I actually enjoy this game. 8.5 out of 10 from me.
cool tabletop game with dice and strats.
