Laser Rapier go slash. me like Laser Rapier.
A timeless classic, anyone who missed out experiencing this masterpiece should definitely give it a chance; it holds up.
System Shock is a shining example of what a remake should be. The original game from 1994 was one of the first games ever to use a proper 3d build, It used sprites for objects, suffice to say it's quite dated. The remake has everything you'd expect from a modern game, from amazing visuals to proper models and animations while also keeping the 90's feeling. It is also incredibly immersive, there are no loading screens, every upgrade is an item that makes sense, every ability has strength and a level of energy drain. You can use glide boots to quickly move around the corridors of the station but they use energy, the same energy used by your plasma rifle and shields. Will you have enough energy to kill a cyborg possibly waiting around the corner, or will you have to switch to normal weapons with limited ammunition, or run out of energy and run back to a charging station/use limited batteries ? The thing that elevates this above other remakes as an example of how they should be done is the level of detail they put in being faithfull to the original. Every deck has the same layout as in the original, every room feels the same despite having modern models, all the objectives stayed the same, in fact you can use the guides for the original game to beat the remake. But that faithfull representation of the original can also be its biggest weakness, this is a 90's game made in 2023. The game does not hold your hand, it has no waypoints, no tips, no highlights. You are expected to read, to listen, to remember things, even write things down at times. I've seen threads about people failing the game right off the bat in the start menu by not reading that hardest story difficulty introduces a time limit to the game. To me personaly that is such a breath of fresh air, having to figure out how to accomplish tasks by exploring, listening to audio logs and piecing together the solutions to stop the current plan Shodan exposed when mocking your efforts feels so rewarding. But of course its 2026, a game that requires thinking will not be for everybody.
A faithful and respectful remaster of a classic. It perfectly preserves the eerie, clinical atmosphere of the original while polishing the gameplay in all the right ways. Exploring Citadel Station feels just as tense and captivating as it did decades ago, but with smoother controls, better feedback, and modern design sensibilities. A fantastic tribute to a legendary game.
Excellent remaster of a classic. Don't expect waypoint, list of objectives, highlighting paths to follow; you need to read and listen to understand what your goals are.
I am shocked by how well the gameplay holds up! If you're a fan of BioShock, you'll love this game.
If you were thinking of getting this game, think twice. ATARI really added their Retro-Neon Chimney Glass vomit to almost everything in the CyberRealm (a huge part of the game, basically a quakers version of a budget Schmup), and of course SHODAN is fought in this hellscape (ugh). Then everything is just a monotonous task of trying to replicate the Lord and Savior 'DOOM' (Which it Fails Spectacularly); where finding key cards, solving random wire puzzles (so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ many), finishing a half baked (Magnus Carlson wincing) chess match, and of course backtracking for every single Security Camera because obviously they'd lock progression behind them (and some cameras give only 2% out of 100% while the door is locked behind 0-20% requirement meaning 80% of the cameras destroyed SMFH). And don't even bother with trying to finish this without re reading every passenger note (which is nothing but a chore because the writing is dull, dim, and dented), and listening to every audio journal two to three times (which would be fine, but this has modern millenial taint all over it, nothing like how good a John Shirley book "Bioshock: Rapture" would be), otherwise, you'd walk in the same room about ten times trying to get your bearings (and this too wouldnt be a bad thing, if every room had some cool art like 'Postal 4', NOPE, just bare bones molecules and isotopes SMFH). This game was nothing but padded playtime, and it really was honestly the most DSP-dented/felted game I've ever played. The reason why I never finished the original was due to the controls, but I'd rather play with that terrible mouse and keyboard support on that gem, than ever be subjected to this millenial modern day dogsht. The enemy variety was bland, mundane, and only about 7-8 in total, all with a reskin of a SHODAN cyborg. I chose female, thinking it would enhance my playthrough, with a feminine sexy voice, but lo and behold, she's the silent protaganist type. Let's not forget, every time you die, you have to look at the character model (and you will die ALOT because the AI is goofed), and it's basically just a Trans man, with pink hair, painted nails, and a flatter chest than Eliot Page in 'The Odyssey' FFS. Dana Hunter's Audio Journal at the end really sealed the deal for me with how dogsht this game was. And it's exactly what you would expect when you're finally ingratiated and locked in ready to beat the game, only to be thrown out of the emersion with an 'LGBTQ Lesbo trauma dump where she tries to get cute with insulting her former girlfriend for being 37 years old and 'how can you not understand yourself yet' (yea picture as bad as some CW "BatWoman" or Jessica Gao writing "She Hulk" BIG YIKES). I swear, it's every game where a feminist gets involved through a Black Rock DEI HR manager, just so you can get the funding necessary to finish your project, then you keep it in the game to appease the Zoey Quinn or the Rebekkah Valentine or the Anita Sarkessian or Alanah Pearce plant, but always at the end knowing daymn well we have to accept it if we want to finish the game. Devious devilry indeed. I am a Bioshock/DeUs Ex loyalist, and was hoping for the Mary DeMarle/Ken Levine payoff here. What I got was more of what you would see in Dragon Age Vielguard with the Stubble on the upper lip of a female Quanari. What a worthless game, honestly a despicable display, especially when watching the whole credits and seeing so many worked on this. So many Clowns to actually give us this half-baked BUNS.
