I am a 55 year old biker and trucker father, and probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 16 now. My son got this game for from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 12 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he let me borrow his controller. Me and my son then played in turns and I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my son many happy memories.
SS1's Kex port is the worst thing Nightdive ever put out. This is still worth buying, but I just want to bring attention to the source port being horrible buggy and horrible to play. You have to patch files just to get your mouse to work properly, and even then the game will still has no physics interpolation and plays at a low tick rate, which means that movement is horrifyingly choppy and disgusting. On top of that, the dynamic music doesn't work properly, the most egregious example being that the groves action music just literally never plays. One of the best tracks in the game, and you'll never hear it. My suggestion? Buy the game and download the old files, from the pre-kex version of the game. That way, the game runs well, plays smooth, looks faithful to the DOS game, and has fully functional music. I hope one day they go back to the source port and fix all it's issues. The bummer is that kex does genuinely make the game more accessible with the ability to rebind any key and to change the FOV, but all that is for nothing when I want to vomit playing it anyways.
I wouldn't recommend this over the remake. My only reason for getting this version was to experience its atmosphere the way it was intended. Leaving a 'not recommended' review didn't feel fair to the game though. Since this is a very old game, you're expected to read the manual to understand the controls as there's almost no in-game tutorial. Once you get past what might be the strangest control scheme you've ever encountered, it's actually quite fun. It has the feel of an 80s hacker movie. But the gameplay and levels are remade one-to-one in the newer version, so there's really no reason to play this one unless you prefer the original visuals.
First playthrough review time. System Shock Enhanced is an updated version of an old first-person sci-fi game set inside a big space facility that has gone wrong. You wake up after a long time in a place that is not normal anymore, and most of what happened before is not shown directly. Instead, you slowly understand things by reading messages, hearing recordings, and checking different parts of the station. The story is there, but it is not pushed in your face, so you kind of piece it together as you move forward. The gameplay is in first-person and mostly about exploring, opening new paths, and dealing with enemies while keeping track of limited supplies. You spend a lot of time moving through connected decks, trying to figure out where to go next, and using whatever tools you find along the way. In conclusion, System Shock Enhanced keeps the same design as the original but makes it easier to control and approach. It focuses more on atmosphere, slow progress, and understanding through the environment rather than direct guidance. Even in this updated form, it still keeps its old structure and style intact.
Has long standing issues that will never be fixed by the devs. This should be the definitive version of the game, but I struggle to recommend it over the original on dosbox, or the mac version sourceport.
loved this game and all. the only thing missing is being able to create your own human with the limbs and skeletons you find along the way. Imagine you collect all of them and make yourself a new friend that follows you around.
I have a huge amount of respect for System Shock, its a foundational classic and a must have in any library. However... Its not an easy one to play nowadays. I tried to get into it so many times and every single one of them I gave up. The interface is too clunky and not very intuitive and the level design is a headache. Its a classic, but not for me. This Enhanced Edition has the usual Nightdive seal of quality. Plays nice on the Deck.
I can't stop playing this game and its sequel, they're just so good. For both this one and the second one, I finished the game then immediately started over on the highest difficulty. If you enjoy Bioshock or Prey (2017) I think you'll really enjoy this, you can really feel the System Shock DNA in so many other great games.
