lesbian necromancy is the only genre of video game that matters
This review will be aimed at people who, like me, already played through the original and wonder if it's worth their buck. TLDR : yes, different experience, not sure if it's worth full price but definitely worth if discounted. The game improves on many qualms I had with the original : + Monsters, weapons, accessories and consumables do not compete for active slots anymore. This was my biggest issue with the original. + You're not forced to equip the necromancer's sword all the time anymore + Monsters gain XP not only from being active in combat, but also from killing other monsters themselves. The XP bounty goes to whoever dealt the finishing blow, so your character won't get the XP from a mob killed by your summon anymore (was half the XP in the original game) + Monsters aren't limited to "level" 5 anymore. + Monsters don't disappear from your inventory when they die, they're knocked out instead and can be revived with items. + TWENTY monsters can be stored in your inventory. Only 3 may be active at a time, like the original. + You're not limited to 3 or 7 slots in your run anymore, there's an actual inventory now. + Improved mob AI that you can customise with the new [strike] gambit [/strike] tactics system, FFXII fans will love it. + A LOT more content. E.g. Floor 1 has like 4 or 5 "subfloors" and each is as big as 1 floor from the original (at least, from floor 1 so far). + There's also optional bosses and challenge rooms, and you can replay previous rooms with special goals (finish under X times, no hit, no summon, use X weapon type, etc.) + More story cutscenes, cool for someone who liked the original story. The changed gameplay has some good and some bad + More dynamic fighting + More attacks variety (aerial attacks, "semi"-charged attacks) + You can (double) jump! Aerial combat yay. You can dodge shockwaves by jumping over them for example + Most forge materials are now acquired from releasing a summon + Monsters can now have more than 1 skill (Restorebbit can attack now, wutwut!) + Everything has more HP and different stats and scaling, the original had this issue for me that I either dealt 1 dmg or one-shotted mobs. This is not an issue anymore. + Some extra content (e.g. challenge mode) is accessible from the get go ~ No directly adjustable difficulty setting that I could find so far, unlike the original. I personally don't mind as the game does feels a little more challenging overall and it appears the more you clear consecutive sections the ~ Lock-on and targeting is confusing at first (due to 2 indicators, one orange indicating targeting, turns blue if you're locked on. It's alright once you get the hang of it, but not super intuitive ~ You can see what's the next trait a monster will learn, but you need to have them equipped and open the "status" window for it. It'd be nice if we could see that directly from the summon menu, or allow us to see unequipped summon from the status menu. - Dashing and dodging feels clunkier than in the original. - Enemy levels scale much faster than your own monsters can keep up, so you end up releasing/reviving a lot just to keep your mobs higher level. This makes the tactics system a lot less interesting since you'll have to recustomize every new mob you get. The ability to customize tactics by monster type, rather than for each individual monster, would be much less of a hassle. - You spend (much) more time in menus than in the OG due to the change in forging material drop, changes in trait system and the new tactics. You'll be reviving and releasing a lot of monsters in order to farm for mats, so that's the downside of it. - Forging mats are seemingly capped at 99 of each. - Minor hurdle, but it takes longer to unlock coop (you still need to beat the first boss and grab homunculus flask). I still recommend the game in spite of that, it's really a new take on the original and not just a 3D version of it.
Backer here from the Kickstarter. I'm really, REALLY surprised with how much this remake evolves from the original. Aerial combat, several weapons, combo system, new modes, a Gambit system like FFXII!!! It feels like jumping from Zelda from the NES to Ocarina of Time. It's crazy how good was the jump from 2D to 3D. Really fun. I will probably buy it on Switch and keep playing on there. And I almost forgot, the MC and her partner are lesbians, so if you want to see some LGBTIQ+ representation here you have it.
Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection is a great action RPG in which you'll resurrect monsters to fight for you. The end goal is to save a very special person. It has no missable achievements, and completion takes around 18 hours. I already loved the looks of the original but this one looks awesome as well. It does quite a lot of things differently and has many improvements that the remake is a welcome new edition. You play as Tama, who just lost someone very close to her. She decided to visit the Necromancer in the hopes of reviving Koko. However, reviving someone isn't that easy and requires a lot of power. That is why you have to go through a huge dungeon while practicing summoning monsters. Those summoned monsters will help you get through the dungeons as they fight for you, but can also trigger mechanics by standing on pressure plates or attacking buttons to press them that way. At first, the game is challenging because you're low-level, and the summoned monsters are also low-level. You can save your progress in the main area, so I recommend going back there after every level so as not to lose too much progress if you die. However, leveling up goes quickly as long as you fight monsters that are around the same level as you are, so you'll get stronger and stronger quite quickly. I love the voice acting in this game, as well as the music and the new graphic design. Another great thing about Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection is that most of the levels are short. This way, it is easy to do another level and another one as you don't feel trapped in a huge level and can save quite a lot. Many levels have a randomized layout, so even if you play the same level, you'll still have the challenge of finding the key to the exit and the way to the exit. I didn't use summoned monsters in this version as much as in the previous one. The 3D levels make the summons get stuck quite a lot. They will respawn next to you if you keep walking and get far enough away from them, but I didn't feel safe enough to rely on them all the time. It also made me mostly choose flying summons to join me in my fights. Another thing I struggle with is the inventory space. It is quite limited and while I understand the choice, it was a bit of a choir to remove unwanted weapons and summons constantly. I gave the suggestion to at the option to label the monsters you want to keep, so at least you don't have to keep thinking about which ones you really don't want to remove. Achievement-wise, SOTN:R has no missable achievements. You can just play through the game blind and mop up later on the missing achievements. I would recommend just playing through all the levels without worrying about the medals, as they will be so much easier to unlock later on when you are a higher level and so much stronger. I will highly recommend resurrecting every monster to find all the different ones, and removing them from your inventory gives resources that can be used to improve your weapons, tools, and accessories. I give Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection 4 out of 5 stars. There's no rebinding for controls for controller. I feel as though this is genuinely such a fundamental setting, and I don't understand how it's missing from a non-early access title. [strike]There's also no setting to change camera sensitivity on mouse/keyboard, so even playing that feels miserably awful. [/strike] <- Strike through because I just missed it. Also, with kb/m, there are two ways to go "back" in a menu, the first is by taking your hand off off wasd or mouse to press the backspace key. There is no rebind for this. There is another way, which is by right clicking, but nothing in the menu responds to clicks, like your mouse cursor doesn't interact with the menus or cycle through tabs or anything, so it's very non-intuitive and just feels bad to me. There's stuttering, and the frame rate isn't stable, and won't even reach my monitor's refresh rate, even with V-Sync on, which clearly isn't working? Off or on it's the same result. My specs are way more than enough to play this game. Ryzen 7 5800X3D, RTX 3080, and 32 GB of ram. Did someone play test this at all? This was literally showcased at TGA 😭
its a good game (too lazy to do a long review. Buy the game or I will stub your toe under a door)
I wish all lesbians a very pleasant time playing this game. A major upgrade from the previous iteration. A ton of nice quality of life fixes, while also adding verticallity. QOL changes like dodges make you run afterwards, start-of-game double jump!! tons more inventory space to mitigate the previous games nigh-constant inventory management issues. Now you can do it once a room or every 3-5 rooms and it works out fine. (the older game made you deal with it every chest and every enemy potentially.) The most impactful change, is harder to describe. The animation and game-flow are majorly improved. It feels a lot smoother and fun to play. That said? They could improve by adding a few more attacks and combos. Along the lines of "Rustil: Eternal Labyrinth Castle" which has more interesting jump and on-the-floor combos, as well as dodge/dash attacks. Would be a lot of new animations tho, so i understand why there not there to start with.
The idea of dungeon crawling with summons sounded like a lot of fun to me, but I just kept wanted to stop playing. The dungeons are pretty bland and the puzzles are very basic. When monsters show up you can generally just spam the attack button, no need to think about special moves or weapon combinations. Besides that the summons do not feel impactful at all. You can generally ignore them as they're also a very passive mechanic. There's no real fun interactions with them. You can adjust their behavior by setting 'tactics', which can be fun, but also turned out annoying by stuff like the pressure plates. Your summons have to sometimes stand on a pressure plate and you need to set a tactic in the menu for them to do this. Having to repeat this whenever you have a different summon is such a drag. To be fair I quit after playing for a bit over half an hour, which was about 5 dungeon levels. The game definitely didn't hook me at the start.
Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection” is a standout dungeon-crawler with a fresh twist—reviving fallen enemies to fight by your side. This unique mechanic, paired with randomized dungeons, keeps gameplay exciting and dynamic. The heartfelt story about love and redemption adds depth to the action, blending perfectly with the stunning pixel art and atmospheric music. Combat is smooth and rewarding, offering plenty of customization with weapons and skills, while intense boss battles keep you on your toes. For fans of roguelikes and emotional storytelling, this is a must-play. A true indie gem!
I love this remake, and they exceed my expectations by improving upon close to every aspect of the game.. with a few caveats there are a few issues - it takes a bit to load (at least on my SteamDeck) - the fact that my SteamDeck goes to 99% GPU/fan usage without dynamic resolution, despite not allowing me to lower the resolution past 1152x720 (that said, I found no vsync, dynamic resolution on, at medium quality, worked really well) - being able to change the controls around would be nice, but not that big of a problem as far as I'm concerned (especially if they fix it at some point) - I had a fatal error crash at the end of 1-3 which was quite disheartening to come back to see that nothing was saved.. I understand why they don't, and don't necessarily think they should, but it still sucked All in all I think the developer has made amazing progress with this, and can't wait for Revenant.
