SO GOOD. Loved it. There is a fair amount of misspelled words, but it's not a serious issue
some of the dialogue hit way too close to home in a very mean way, hurtful even
Surrogate has an extremely beautiful art style, the palette alone is inspired. Great experience, poignant writing and compelling characters. Haven't even finished it but felt a need to gush a little bit. Definitely up there with Milk Outside Bag in my ranking, very favorably.
Its wonderful. Ever felt kinda like losing your mind? Ever felt that "♥♥♥♥, im slipping."? Ever felt like overanalyzing, being paranoid and schizo? Ever thought that someone feels same way? No? This game made me feel less alone by showing someone with exact same monologues i have. This game is bizzare and comforting. Downside? Its kinda short. Its also a blast if youre playing while dipping that devils lettuce.
The Surrogate is the total definition of “It's all in your head”, or “Oh, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this, or I'm glad someone managed to make sense of all the things I'm thinking of into reality”. Who would know I'll be finding a game that can stylishly convey all my skepticism, and inner turmoil into practice with quotable mumble jumble of 2 characters battling it out on what's the purpose of life and what's reality? The way Surrogate play around with a close-up pause camera shot on the face, displaying emotions like despair at certain tense and funny moments (like working at a fast food restaurant), giving it a unique edge compared to other visual novels. Whereby it can be tricky to get a gasp what this game is about which you will get the hang of it upon a couple of playthroughs, I would say it is harder to tell who is speaking (and this is speaking about me personally as I am dyslexic) as all text is in the same colours and it doesn't have names next to the speech text to indicate who's speaking as you play as Franny [strike]speaking[/strike] arguing to herself. You will get used to it (hopefully), but it does make reading this game a bit harder than it should if you are a person with reading difficulty. It would have been nice to have different colour text for each character and an option to edit the text. Just a little bit of that can go a long way for exclusivity to other players. Nonetheless, don't let me discourage you from trying this game out. You will find a lot of relatability and a lot of phases you want to stick on your fridge.
Pretty solid VN with unique artstyle, short but branchy and engaging plot with a lot of main character introspection and everything that comes with that process (i.e. self-loathing). Small cast of supportive characters fits the narrative well and delivers broad range of emotional interaction. The story meant to be experienced, not described in this review, but in general it's somewhat close to Serial Experiments Lain or Tehnolyze vibe with some inspiration taken from Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk (in good sense, i mean who does not take inspiration from that, huh?). The only thing that ruins the whole experience is jarred music loops (some fadein/fadeout can help there) and minimal usage of sounds as whole.
A game that will stay in your head for a long time, whether because of the good art, bizarre world, philosophical dialogues and/or because Frances is just perfect XD [Eng and Pt-Br review]
I like following unknown and different games, you never know what you might find. I ended up looking at the Surrogate page, saw an image and just loved the art! It's simple, but full of charisma, it's beautiful but at the same time it knows how to be repulsive, it's dark but it manages to fill us with happiness! I certainly didn't know what I was getting myself into, the game is much more than good art. First we have Frances, a beautiful and charismatic protagonist, impossible not to like her pessimism, indecision, procastination and conspiracy theories, a very human and real character. Reading her dialogues with her rude internal persona is fun, I don't completely disagree with her opinions but I can't say I agree either, it's practically a philosophical discussion hidden among dozens of insults. Then we are introduced to the game's universe, of course, nothing is completely explained, which is honestly excellent because it messes with our minds, before long the bizarre conspiracy theories start to not seem so impossible. Everything is so sick, repulsive, but engaging. It's a kind of cyberpunk world but more focused on a dark electrogore, yes I know, that 2 or 3 animes come to mind, but I refuse to say their names, yes, they are that ones, but throwing names of other works as a comparison is a kind of disrespect for itself, it's as if you take away the originality of the work, works are more than the sum of their influences and, boy, Surrogate has unparalleled originality. Developers, if you read this at some point, I deeply thank you for this work, how did you manage to create such a bizarre world? I would certainly like the story to continue in another game, well, even if it's another game from another genre with a completely different story, it doesn't matter, I believe that these developers are capable of surprising me again. And, if possible, Frances could appear again, as a main or secondary character, I just love her and would like to know more what happened.

Well, that was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wild read. The pacing is kind of slow even for a shorter VN, the music is very repetitive, and the writing kinda hurts my brain but the art is so cool. It's also cheap as ♥♥♥♥ so ♥♥♥♥ it, why not give it a shot? You may vibe with it more than I did. Still think it was overall worth playing through.
Honestly great game that is underappreciated
