Oh man, why isn’t this one more well known? At the time of writing, there are only four episodes available, with two more apparently on the way, and I honestly can’t wait for the rest. This is built on GZDoom, but it’s more than just a Doom total conversion. There is a story here, something about AI, and all that good sci-fi stuff. I mostly mashed through the story bits because I just wanted to blast things, but it is there, and it’s mainly presented through terminals. At its core, this is a boomer shooter running on GZDoom, and it absolutely delivers. The weapons are really fun, the shooting feels great, and the level design is excellent. You are constantly unlocking shortcuts that make backtracking smoother, and there are loads of secrets with meaningful permanent upgrades. Episodes don't have many levels but each one is large. The guns are a highlight. It has a great shotgun pair, the combat feels satisfying, most of the enemies are fun to fight, and the bosses are pretty good too. Each episode adds something new to the experience. I did find Episode 4 a bit weaker than the others, mostly because the theme and environments didn’t really grab me, but it still wasn’t bad. One odd issue I had was with the story terminals. If I left them open for too long, they caused a really aggressive sort of “burn-in” effect on my monitor. I could still see the text stuck on the screen for a while after leaving the game, even after turning off the monitor and computer and coming back later. It happened twice, but thankfully it faded in the end. I fixed it by running the game through Gamescope and capping the FPS. Anyway, if you enjoy Doom-likes, you will very likely enjoy this. It deserves way more attention.
This is a U/GZ Doom Total conversion with BlackJack and Hookers. The only real problem is that the BTSX pedigree for big well made mazish doom levels hits a problem when your automap doesn't display them in a way that's very understandable. Before final release they need to get with Nash or the Selaco devs and get some sort of 3D automap merged into UZDoom. As a UZdoom sicko I can figure it out, but some stuff genuinely would take a new player a bit to figure out.
Very nice oldschool shooter!!! I love it!
It's a tense, lonely ride, that handles like an instant genre classic from the jump. Incredible level design, insane soundtrack, arguably the best arsenal in boom shooting, banger set piece encounters around seemingly every corner, etc.
The levels are interesting, if overlong. The lore is very well written. The music is REALLY good for a boom-shoot. You can really tell there's a lot of passion behind this from a lot of experienced doom modders. The weapons are just OK, the monsters as well, and they love dropping a ton of monsters behind you from a monster closet. IMO, the first episode was the most fun, and the design / drive to play suffered after that. I probably won't finish Supplice, as much as I want to. Solid experience, but if you're not already a boomer shooter fan, this probably isn't going to be the one to change your mind. Love doom mods and wanna support a passion project? Then it's worth the money.
I recommend this game but it's a tricky recommendation. This is definitely not a bingeable game; it gets old after a while inherently and you come back to it. I can't find myself lasting more than about two hours at a time before I've had enough and I'm ready to do something else. Fundamentally, it's a Doom mod with Slaughter-style enemy counts, and the levels are very sophisticated puzzle boxes that progressively open up, but man, it's easy to get lost. The objective marker on the map provides the most essential way to stay on the rails, but they need to be more frequently updated; embedded within that marker is the context around the other things you'd need to do to get on the other side of a locked door that's in front of it. There's a very limited armory and bestiary, and the guns feel good, but it gets old. There's not a ton of incentive to switch between weapons based on what's best for who is in front of you - it's mostly spray-and-pray, and it's quite easy to run out of ammo although more isn't far away. My main piece of advice would be to turn the music way down; it's epic prog metal, but it's like one 6 minute song per ~70 minute level and that gets old FAST. So setting it to like 10% will seriously raise your tolerance threshold for long-term play. And I would seriously recommend that they do an editing pass on all the terminal text before 1.0 launch - it is SO SO tedious and I almost never end up reading them. I'm sure the writing is great but they've presented it in the most uncompelling way possible. I'm up to the start of Episode 4 now and it was only towards the end of Episode 3 where they may have been some crucial progression information that I missed by clicking through the endless walls of text - I just did one that was 17 pages, that's ridiculous! So yeah, this game is flawed. It delivers on the fundamentals but there's a few things you have to tolerate. Reminds me a lot of Ion Fury.
Great boomshoot, familiar and different with a great story wrapped up in there. Any ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are minor, and sometimes it's easy to get lost in the architecture, but if you're used to Doom's esoteric map design you'll feel at home here. Awaiting chapter 5 with great anticipation.
I am loving this, thankyou. As an old gamer, the Doom similarites are fantastic. Maps are well crafted and lengthy. Plently of spaces to hide and attack at advantage when a horde comes at you. Reminds me of classic top 100 wads. Take it fast or slow, it's up to the player.
