Well that was just awful, And not because of the way it looks or whatever, this part is great - for one, it doesn't really flow. The main reason to play this would be the humour and the weirdness. And I didn't like either of those; there's this meanness to it (I mean, the phrase "hoi polloi" is in the game's description, go figure). I guess that's British humour for you? Turns out I don't like it after all. But that's a matter of taste. Does the idea of going to a supermarket to make fun of people that are clearly beneath you with a sprinkle of animal cruelty and poop jokes sound like a good time? Knock yerself out mate. I'm a boring ♥♥♥♥ who likes nice and happy things, so I'll pass. I did chuckle two or three times though, which is actually quite an achievement - so I'm not refunding this. But how did this get reviewed in The Guardian (postively no less) is absolutely beyond me.
Supermarket Times is a bizarre point-and-click game set in a hand-drawn supermarket full of strange products and even stranger people! It is a fairly short game and can be completed in its entirety in less than 2 hours. It offers some fun point-and-click gameplay, satisfying puzzles, and kooky styling. The surreal and silly nature of the game is quite appealing, unfortunately, this is marred by ineffective and uneasy attempts at humour that seem simply designed to shock. The overall tone is quite immature, and while this works well for the hand-drawn and simplistic aesthetic, it does not sit well in terms of the so-called jokes. While NSFW content is not inherently problematic, Supermarket Times goes to extremes without purpose or much comedic value. The overall effect is muddled, confused, and disappointing, especially as the game had the potential to play on its unique and surreal vibes and bizarre but satisfying gameplay and actually be a really fun experience. ''Do you know bananas are considered berries?' 'No? Well....now you do''. Look, I'm not one to find British humour that focuses on celebrities and pop culture funny, so when I found out this game features a sale narrator giving dry descriptions of certain items and reasoning for why you should buy them (along with some dad and toilet jokes in between), I knew I was going to get a lot of laugh-out-loud moments out of it. If you haven't already, you should have watched the trailer already to see if these types of jokes are made for you; if you did and you at least grin at one of the jokes, then I promise you there is plenty to keep raising your lip until you bust out laughing. Throughout the game, you will be traversing through a supermarket interacting with [strike]weird[/strike] unique individuals who want to talk to you about the randomness things like their life stories or beliefs. For example, there was one moment when a mother kept going on and on telling me a story about how her son refuses to eat fruit and vegetables and will only eat processed meat and only processed meat nothing else, she tried to bake a pie for him but he wouldn't eat it if only it only contain processed meat. Obviously, the main objective isn't just talking to strangers but exploring the supermarket not only interacting with people but with items as well, each having their own non-serious funny commentary about them. Some if not most of them are bad they're so funny. Even the VA would agree with me as I counted twice they break characters and laugh at their ridiculous jokes. There was even this one time I was expecting a commentary for a bag crisp I selected, but all I heard was someone munching on it, and that was it. If any of you find this funny, you'll need to be careful while playing this game as these are types of stupid jokes you could probably die of laughter from. That's not the only thing you could do here as not only are there plenty of interactable things to do but there are also optional challenges and achievements to do where you have to gather certain items in your trolley and bring them to give them to specific people. I wouldn't say these are important for you to complete (unless you like some difficult challenges), but if you don't, as long as you exit the checkout with a big smile on your face, then this game has done its job that you should be happy with. Essentially, Supermarket Time is all about messing around, finding funny dialogues, and having a good laugh, and that's how I felt after doing what I want to do here, so you do the same and have a good time. So get ready to do some pretend shopping when you feel like you don't want to socialise.
Fed a goblin some sweetcorn, communicated with a toilet demon... 10/10
Short, hilarious, and slightly degenerate.
British humour distilled into its purest, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ form. Lovely.
"Supermarket Times" is a hand-drawn point&click surreal adventure. It's a comedy in its core and a satirical, if not ironical at times, depiction of humans. Go through crazy scenarios, have outrageous conversations, complete tasks that you shouldn't and uncover the mysteries of the supermarket. There is no sense of direction and everything feel like they happen at random. The humor is hit or miss. It is boring though. I could go along with the concept of "supermarket simulator" but it would require some actual gameplay. As a point and click adventure there are no real puzzles or solutions. It tries to be sophisticated and deep in a silly way; the main reason it uses a surreal artwork. But it doesn't deliver. Something is missing.. The gameplay. This and actually interesting or mysterious characters. It tires the eyes very fast and because there is very little use of actual logic, you get confused and dizzy too fast. The developer hasn't cleverly designed the puzzles so it's more "click everywhere until the solution clicks" above all else. It's a very good idea that has been executed poorly. I wish to see more from the developer as he has interesting ideas (even if this one missed the mark).
