I was scouring through the amass of different games available, for something that was challenging and polished. This game, 'Super Space Towers' caught my eye, as it reminded me a bit like the retro game Thrust. I checked the demo, and made a purchase after 10mins. This game is really awesome and challenging, with plenty of obstacles, puzzles and every level is time challenged. If you like speed running games, this is the one....
Aliens have invaded and are sabotaging the power towers needed to run society. Your mission is to go deal with the enemy, rescue any survivors, and return stability to the area by picking up orbs and dispensing them in their proper receptacles. Your ship is run on thrusters and is heavily influenced by momentum, gravity, and inertia. You possess a basic weapon to kill enemies and the ability to drag switches, pick up items, and teleport to different areas. Controlling the ship becomes even harder when dragging orbs to their destination as they add weight to your ship and swing around. The sensation of controlling the ship feels very realistic and satisfying. If they hit objects or environments they can unlatch and require retrieving once again. This can become frustrating especially if there are lots of tight areas to navigate. This game is certainly not easy, and levels can last thirty minutes or more, and with over thirty levels getting progressively longer and more difficult, there is a lot of content for the money. New elements get added at each level including switch manipulation, used to toggle force fields on or off, gravity fields, which add resistance when travelling in one direction, teleporters, which will send you to a different part of the map, different enemies with increasing fire power, and puzzle elements. Finishing the level with only two lives is challenging. Your shield weakens when hit by enemy fire or when you collide with surfaces. There are shield power ups which can replenish your shield, and checkpoints, which help in progression, but until you get competent flying your ship, death comes easily. If you want an extra challenge, and want to compete on the leaderboards for that level, you need to rescue all the survivors and escape. This is very difficult as there are some quite tricky puzzles to access areas where they are located. I really liked the aesthetic of the game, with the circular towers feeling imaginative and immersive. Sound is also very good with a distinctive retro arcade sound. If you are a fan of 3D physics games with puzzle and shooting elements then this should provide a lot of fun and plenty of content to enjoy. A very well done arcade experience. This is it!!! I very like arcade games with simple story, beautiful graphic and something what is unique. This release got all of these. The mechanics of flying isn't easy - it's not a simply 2d combat game - you need patience, control and precision, especially your ship never stops - the influence of gravity and inertia is on an every move. First 30 minutes is quite difficult: you hit every wall of the tower, but after a few minutes of practice you can enjoy your flight. This game is also a bit of puzzle, but not too much, you will not break your mind. Great game!!!
Fans of Thrust rejoice. This is a modern 3D remake of one of the best games ever made. It expands on the 2D origins a lot by adding a rotating tower in the style of Nebulus (aka Tower Toppler) and adds new Switch/Gate mechanics, varied enemy turrets and traps and hidden loot. Exploration, puzzle solving and elite piloting are a requirement. But don't worry if you keep crashing. Multiple skill levels and persistence will be rewarded. Awesome.
So few games like this, with the Thrust / Asteroids type control. Creamy playability and the cargo pickup / dropoff mechanism adds a unique extra dimension to the already awesome physics. Graphics are crisp and polished, with a cool Nebulus-style rotating tower type effect. Enemies, pods and bubbles etc. sound and flash and satisfyingly when you shoot them. There are some neat design elements such as the elegantly curved platforms of Level 7, the rising water when you shoot water pods, and the slingshot style puzzle from one of the extra levels. I would have liked to have seen more difficulty when progressing through the game. The levels seemed to stay almost as hard throughout. It would have been really cool to have a limited amount of time and/or thrust energy to add a sense of urgency and strategy, respectively, to the game, since it's possible to play it really safe with micro-movements of the ship if you really wanted to (but where's the fun in that? :) Alas, even on hard mode, I found the game fairly easy, but then I am a complete sucker for Thrust games. Roll on the sequel with more variety, larger/smaller payloads, power ups such as three way shots, HARDER difficulty choice, increasingly harder levels, different gravity-strength worlds, payloads strung to other payloads (for even more physics fun!), and maybe even bosses!
Good and fun game, very hard.
Has some real retro vibes, love the Neon lights and animations, sound effects are great, one sounds like Mario when he goes through a tube with some echo added... love it !! Game feels pretty well balanced and it takes skill to do each level. Well worth a look and a play !!
Arcade gameplay perfection. SST captures everything great about Thrust-likes from yester-year and then raises the bar a bunch for the next team to tackle the genre. GFX and SFX could definitely use some polish but really, at the end of the day, arcade games are all about that gameplay. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a game that you can pick up and put down at will, employs 100% skill-based gameplay that is easy to pick up and hard to master, and challenges you to perfect your skills.
As and older gamer I was looking for a reworking of the game Thrust by Firebird from the 8 bit machines - this is it. It's quite a bit more forgiving, but a fund indie game nontheless, with nice physics and level design. Great for a quick blast when you don't have hours to sink into the latest AAA title.
I stumbled across this game because of a random Youtube video that mentioned it. I think it's criminal that this game is so under the radar. Plenty of retro goodness. It reminds me of Solar Jet Man mixed with Tower Toppler, all in a juicy neon drenched presentation that plays incredibly smoothly. It's hard and challenging, each level taking about 15-20 minutes to get a perfect on each level. A good game at a good price.
