Super Magbot is a good platformer! If you like things like Super Meat Boy, then you'd likely enjoy this, I think! The main gimmick is interesting, and requires some practice to get down, and I think it gets nicely elaborated on throughout. Worth $10, I think :]
Super Magbot is a precision 2D platformer developed by Astral Pixel and published by Team17 that boldly reimagines one of the most fundamental mechanics of the genre: jumping. Instead of giving players a traditional jump button, the game centers entirely on magnetic attraction and repulsion as the sole means of traversal. This single design decision reshapes the entire platforming experience, turning what could have been a retro-inspired homage into a distinctive mechanical challenge that demands thoughtful control and spatial awareness. You play as Magbot, a small robotic hero tasked with restoring balance to a threatened galaxy. While the narrative remains light and mostly serves as a framework for progression, the gameplay concept is anything but simple. Magbot cannot jump at all. Instead, he fires magnetic pulses in two polarities—red to attract and blue to repel—allowing him to pull toward magnetic surfaces or push himself away from them. The absence of a jump fundamentally alters how players approach level design. Momentum must be generated through careful aiming, timing, and understanding of magnetic physics, creating a rhythm that feels both calculated and dynamic. The early levels serve as a tutorial in understanding polarity and trajectory. Pulling toward a magnetized surface can gently guide Magbot upward, while repelling from a surface can launch him across wide gaps. However, these actions are not automated or forgiving; every movement requires deliberate input. Angles matter. Timing matters. Overcommitting to a polarity or misjudging a launch vector often results in instant failure. As the stages grow more complex, players are required to chain magnetic interactions in rapid succession, weaving through hazards while maintaining control over speed and direction. Level design is where Super Magbot truly shines. Each stage is constructed with meticulous precision, emphasizing spatial puzzles and layered challenges. Some sequences demand slow, careful positioning, while others push players into rapid decision-making under pressure. Additional mechanics are gradually introduced to keep the formula fresh—moving platforms, alternating polarity zones, and environmental hazards that demand split-second polarity swaps. The game steadily builds mechanical depth without abandoning its central magnetic premise, ensuring that mastery feels earned rather than accidental. The difficulty curve is unapologetically steep. Super Magbot aligns itself with the tradition of demanding platformers that reward perseverance. Checkpoints are placed thoughtfully, but the margin for error remains slim. Success often comes after repeated attempts, with each failure teaching subtle refinements in aim and movement. For players who appreciate games like Super Meat Boy or Celeste, the trial-and-error process will feel familiar and satisfying. The challenge is rarely unfair; instead, it demands consistent execution and patience. Visually, the game embraces a vibrant pixel-art style reminiscent of 16-bit era platformers. Bright color palettes and clean sprite design make magnetic surfaces and hazards easy to identify, which is critical for a game built on precision. The retro aesthetic is polished rather than nostalgic for its own sake, blending classic influences with modern clarity. The soundtrack complements the action with energetic, chiptune-inspired compositions that sustain momentum without overwhelming the experience. Replayability is enhanced through collectible items, optional challenges, and leaderboard integration. Players seeking perfection can aim for faster completion times or attempt more difficult bonus stages. Because movement is skill-based rather than stat-driven, improvement comes from refined control rather than external upgrades, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on mechanical mastery. Overall, Super Magbot distinguishes itself through a single bold innovation executed with consistency and confidence. By removing the jump and replacing it with magnetic mechanics, it reinvents the platforming formula in a way that feels fresh yet tightly controlled. Its high difficulty, thoughtful level design, and crisp presentation make it a standout among modern indie platformers. For players who enjoy precision challenges and are willing to adapt to an unconventional movement system, it delivers a rewarding and memorable experience grounded in creativity and skill. Rating: 8/10
I always thought the hardest level was the one I had just beaten until the next one proved me wrong. Super Magbot is a 2D platforming game with a twist: you can't jump. Instead you use your magnetic powers to pull yourself toward or push yourself away from magnetic objects to navigate each level. I wouldn't call it a rage game though because it never intentionally tries to troll you. However, it can certainly become frustrating as you may find yourself stuck in a seemingly endless loop of failures and restarts caused by a single tiny mistake. The later levels demand very precise movement and quick thinking within a short amount of time. However, the game includes additional accessibility features at no extra cost. You can remove the cooldown of your magnetic ability, stop time while aiming and even enable checkpoints so you don't have to start each level from the very beginning. Personally, I'm a huge fan of these options since I wouldn't have beaten the game without it. If you're patient and enjoy challenging platformers that reward practice and precision, Super Magbot is absolutely worth picking up during a sale. If frustration gets the better of you easily, then you might want to skip this one.
Not bad, but not for me. General rule of thumb for my reviews, I'm not objectively rating the game, I'm letting you know how it worked for me and if I liked it. I didn't like Super Magbot. Super Magbot is a puzzle platformer, but without the usual jump mechanics. Instead, Super magbot has you controlling a short line around the character that can fire out a short positive or negitive magnetic pulse (it's just red and blue to make things easy). So, much like many puzzle platformers, this game is all about speed and precision. However, this game increases the required precision because you need to control your character AND you need to control the retical around them and time your "shots" correctly. I don't think this game is particularly difficult if you're just trying to complete it. This isn't a rage game or a game that requires pixel perfect positioning, so if you LOVE puzzle platformers and want something a little different, you might like this game. The main reason I don't jive with this game is because I find it too fiddly and not enjoyable enough to warrant pushing through the fiddly nature of the game. In standard puzzle platformers, you only need to consider your character and the level around them, and it's a lot of fun to figure out how to navigate a level. The execution required can range from easy to tough as nails, but it's always the same kind of gameplay, and I think it perfectly rides the line between simplicity and enjoyment. Super Magbot has shifted itself into the more complex side of things, and as such, it is a little easier. The game isn't that much easier due to the added complexity of actually playing, but the levels themselves are incredibly easy to read and understand what you need to do. On top of that, if you don't care about speed, the character will halt in the air for about half a second while you press one of the mouse buttons to give you more time to line up your shot and make a "jump". I think this is what really ruined the game for me. Either I slow WAY down to line up my shots, or I move quick and often miss a shot due to the funky method of handling the reticle around the player. Rather than aiming your mouse somewhere on screen and your reticle pointing towards it, you directly change the direction of the reticle by moving your mous left/right or up/down. This is likely to make it easier to move the reticle quickly, but it ends up making it VERY imprecise and annoying to control. I think this game would be better with a few different control options to allow for handling the reticle differently. If you could change the mouse behaviour, or allow the reticle to be controlled with additional buttons (IJKL, Arrow Keys, Num Pad, ABXY on controller, etc) so you could snap the reticle between 8 different directions, it would remove the fiddly nature of the reticle AND make it so players can control the reticle the way that makes the most sense to them. As is, I'm just not enjoying completing levels enough to continue on. I finished all but the last level in the first world, and you can see how long that took me, so you can extrapulate that this isn't a very long game. Again, I don't really think this is a bad game, but it's not for me. If you don't REALLY like puzzle platformers, you'll probably bounce off of this one.
