About
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure game set on an all-new alien world. It is the next chapter in the Subnautica universe, developed by Unknown Worlds.
Driven from your home by ongoing conflict, Alterra offers you the chance at a new life. But as the colony ship CICADA shepherds you and your fellow Pioneers to your new home, something goes awry. The ship’s AI insists that your mission should continue. Stranded and faced with near-insurmountable odds, you must do everything in your power to survive. The future of humanity on this world is in your hands.
Subnautica 2 is being crafted as a single-player experience that you can optionally play in online co-operative multiplayer with up to three friends. You can choose from four pre-designed characters, with more characters and customization options coming throughout Early Access. Work together to explore long-forgotten ruins and learn to adapt to a planet that might not want you there.
To survive the depths and make this planet your home, you’ll need to utilize all the tools at your disposal. Traverse vibrant and breathtaking biomes with your Tadpole submersible. Design and customize bases to return to when your adventures push you beyond the safety of shallow waters. As Early Access develops, so too will your array of tools, equipment, and vehicles. Upgrades will help push you beyond your boundaries and unlock the secrets of this strange world.
Scan and study a rich world of biodiversity to understand life here. Discover everything from the smallest creatures to towering Leviathans. Experience the wonder, and sometimes danger, lurking around every corner. Every dive is an opportunity to uncover why the ship's AI is so determined to continue the mission and what mysteries lie beneath the surface of this breathtaking new frontier.
Subnautica 2 is an Early Access title in active development. Throughout this journey, we will continuously expand the world with additional biomes, creatures, and craftables, while expanding the narrative. You may encounter bugs, in-development features, and performance issues. Your feedback is the cornerstone of our development process. Join us and help shape the next chapter of the Subnautica universe.
Subnautica 2 is being developed by Unknown Worlds, the studio behind the award-winning Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero. Our journey began with the 2003 Half-Life mod Natural Selection, and today we have evolved into a fully remote, globally distributed team spanning from the United States to the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and beyond. Defined by a philosophy of open development and over a decade of community-focused innovation, we invite you to dive back into the depths with a studio dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the survival genre.

What I liked: -Co-op is well implemented, and the proximity voice chat radio feature is really fun. It forces you to actually stay and work together instead of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ off and doing separate things. I also think accessing each others backpacks is good at encouraging players to share rather than hoard. ALSO the eyes of fellow players will track your in-game face when you look at each other, such a subtle but really immersive detail. - No game ruining bugs so far, don't get me wrong there are bugs here and there that were minorly annoying like the "being revived" box getting stuck on screen; but nothing that a quick restart couldn't fix. - I love the improved graphics, they're not just realistic but actually styled around oceanic beauty and the aesthetics of the alien world. - I was initially disappointed by the lack of "mining." Because in the original game you had to chip at outcroppings to then acquire minerals. This disappointed was pretty quickly forgotten when I remembered the grind and annoyance of not getting the right mineral drops from outcroppings in the original. I don't think this change affects the game negatively, but it does indicate that this game has a much greater story emphasis rather than survival emphasis. The loss of chipping outcroppings really becomes obsolete to me because I enjoyed the satisfaction of the later unlocked sonic and feedback resonator, it was fun and straight forward. - I love all of the biomods that you can upgrade your characters with, it both adds a level of play-style customization and encourages exploration to discover new creatures to scan. - The submechanophobic alien structures that litter specific parts of the map genuine look terrifyingly beautiful. I found myself just staring at them in the distance with both horror and curiosity. - The Collector leviathan is really scary and looks wicked, albeit it's a bit easy to avoid if you just stick to the surface. Thoughts: I honestly thought I'd dislike the game after hearing a lot of gripes from reviews of people comparing it to the original. I think that is why a lot of people don't seem to enjoy this installation, they're expecting the polish that the finished og game has currently. People forget how long it took the og Subnautica to reach its state of being a polished well respected game. For what it's worth, this is the most fun I've had playing a co-op game, even if the updates are slow, I'm sure me and my homie will be coming back to replay it. What I didn't like: - The Shiver leviathan that lurks in the out of bounds areas is honestly kind of lame, it sounds so much scarier than it actually looks. I wish it was a little less.. shark-like?-I guess. - The building is pretty damn solid, but a little janky around the edges, just needs some polish. Sometimes the game will not let you delete moonpools just because some random object is placed in its room or an adjacent one. - The voice acting is usually pretty good for most of the game, but some of the recordings can be really awkward. Someone will literally be yelling about how they're going to die and how somethings actively trying to kill them and they're saying it with the most bland acting you could cough up. What I want for the future of the game: - Please add better ways to defend yourself than just the sonic resonator and flares, or at the very least buff those to be a bit more impactful, there were quite a few annoying building moments where organisms kept attacking me despite my efforts to subdue them. - This ones more of a personal desire, but I'd love to see more creatures that are akin to the looks and behavior of the Crabsquid from Subnautica 1. It's both so scary and so beautiful at the same time. In my opinion more weird lil dudes swimming around that don't immediately resemble a fish on Earth is a good thing. - Consider toning down or reworking some the scary ambience in the deep sections, on one hand I love how absolutely terrifying the sounds are, but you pretty quickly notice the repeated audio loops of roars and rumbles of things that are not there. So far the game is genuinely a blast and I'm super excited to see what the future beholds for this game.

Went for a relaxing underwater adventure. Saw something bigger than my future.
Recommended I've been waiting for a proper follow-up to Subnautica for a long time, and honestly, I think Unknown Worlds nailed it. Subnautica 2 feels familiar without feeling like I'm just playing the first game again. The exploration and atmosphere are still fantastic, but almost everything feels more polished. The graphics are a huge upgrade, the QoL improvements are great, and the game simply feels better to play. The story is where I think the game gets really interesting. There's a lot more mystery surrounding what's actually going on, and the game gives you just enough information to start questioning the people and systems you're relying on. NoA in particular is an interesting addition. Having an AI effectively managing the expedition, while also having the ability to control and reprint your body, creates a really strange situation where you start wondering how much you can actually trust the system keeping you alive. The more you uncover, the more questions seem to appear, and that's exactly what I want from a Subnautica story. There's already a lot to explore, and the game runs surprisingly well for me considering how good it looks. The minimum requirements are pretty high, though. I also have to give Unknown Worlds credit for their communication with the community. Their approach to Early Access and development is one of the best I've seen. They actually listen to feedback and communicate what they're working on. I genuinely can't think of a major complaint. It's Early Access, so there are obviously unfinished areas and things that will change, but that's expected. If you liked the first Subnautica, I highly recommend this. It has connections to the original without relying on it, so it also works well as its own game. Subnautica 2 feels like a proper sequel rather than just more Subnautica, and I'm very excited to see where it goes. I used AI to help me put my thoughts into words, but the opinions and experiences are my own.
